Ophiotaurus
Basic Information
Anatomy
The Ophiotaurus possesses a dual-segment physiology that suggests an evolutionary link to the oldest monsters of the Titanomachy.
- Forequarters: The front half is that of a massive, black-hided bull. It features a heavy, muscular neck, a broad chest, and powerful bovine shoulders ending in cloven hooves.
- Hindquarters: From the ribs backward, the bovine hide transitions into the shimmering, iridescent scales of a great serpent. This tail is prehensile and exceptionally long, allowing the creature to anchor itself to rocks in the deep sea.
- Facial Characteristics: Its head is distinctly bovine, featuring large, moist nostrils and wide, dark eyes. Most notably, it possesses a set of sweeping, obsidian horns that are said to reflect the stars.
Biological Traits
- Chthonic Vitality: The creature's internal organs, particularly its entrails, are infused with a potent, magical essence. According to the Fates, burning these entrails grants the performer the power to defeat the gods.
- Amphibious Nature: While it has the lungs of a bull, its serpentine half allows it to breathe through its skin in high-oxygen water, allowing it to hide in deep underwater caverns for centuries.
Genetics and Reproduction
The Ophiotaurus is widely considered Asexual and Singular.
- Origins: It was not born of two parents but is believed to have been "breathed" into existence by Gaia (Earth) or Thalassa (Sea) during the transition between the age of Titans and the age of Gods.
- Immortality: As a unique entity, it does not age. It only "dies" if sacrificed in accordance with the prophecy.
Growth Rate & Stages
As a primordial being, the Ophiotaurus has no known juvenile stage. It emerged into the world fully formed and has remained in its "Alpha" state for millennia.
Ecology and Habitats
The Ophiotaurus is a creature of extreme isolation.
- Habitat: It dwells in the Stygian Depths or secluded coastal caves where the mountains meet the sea.
- Geographic Distribution: It has no set territory but was famously hidden behind a great wall of mist until the Titan-war began.
Dietary Needs and Habits
The Ophiotaurus is a herbivore of the deep.
- Diet: It feeds on bioluminescent algae and "Star-grass" that grows only in places touched by divine light.
- Metabolism: Its metabolic rate is incredibly slow; it can remain stationary in a "hibernation-trance" for decades at a time.
Biological Cycle
The creature follows a Prophetic Cycle. It remains dormant until a "Great Shift" in the cosmos occurs (such as the transition of power between divine generations), at which point it emerges from the depths to be found by a potential usurper.
Behaviour
The Ophiotaurus is Passive and Melancholy. It displays no aggression toward humans or gods. It is a "victim of its own fate," aware that its body contains the key to the throne of Olympus, and thus it lives in a constant state of hiding.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Solitary. There is only one Ophiotaurus in existence. It shares no kinship with common bulls or sea serpents.
Average Intelligence
Sentient/Mystic Intelligence. While it does not speak, the Ophiotaurus is said to possess "Ancient Knowledge." It can sense the alignment of the stars and the intentions of those who approach it.
Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms
- The Invisible Guard: In myth, Zeus sent a kite (a bird of prey) to protect the creature or snatch its entrails away if it were ever slain. This bird is often considered a spiritual symbiont of the Ophiotaurus.
