Eleusis

Demographics

  • The Eumolpidae: The "High Blood" family, descendants of the first king Eumolpus. They are the hereditary high priests.
  • The Kerykes: The family of heralds who manage the city's diplomacy and public rituals.
  • Initiates (Mystae): A massive seasonal population of outsiders seeking spiritual enlightenment.

Defences

  • The Peribolos Wall: A massive, sacred enclosure wall. It is designed more to keep the "uninitiated" out than to stop an army, but its Mycenaean masonry is formidable.
  • The Akropolis of Eleusis: A fortified hill overlooking the sanctuary where the ruling King (Anax) resides.

Industry & Trade

  • Sacred Grain: The primary export. Eleusinian barley is considered "blessed" and fetches a high price in trade.
  • Kykeon Ingredients: The secret herbs and grains used in the ritual drink of the Mysteries.
  • Pottery: Specifically ritual vessels (kernoi) used in Demeter’s worship.

Infrastructure

  • The Sacred Way: The famous road connecting Eleusis to Athens. In this era, it’s a rugged track marked by shrines and "joking bridges" where ritual insults are hurled.
  • The Callichorum Well: An engineered stone well where Demeter supposedly rested; it is the focal point of the city's water supply.

Assets

  • The Secret of the Grain: Divine favor ensures the city never starves, even during the "Great Bronze Age Collapse" or wartime famines.
  • Religious Immunity: Most Greek kings fear the wrath of Demeter too much to sack the city.

Guilds and Factions

  • The Hierophants: The highest religious authority; they hold the "Keys of the Underworld."
  • The Daughters of Celeus: A faction of priestesses who maintain the sacred hearths and traditions of hospitality.
  • The Athenian Spies: Even before the Trojan War, Athens is constantly trying to find ways to annex this wealthy, holy site.

History

1. The Primordial Era: The Mourning of Demeter

Before Eleusis was a city, it was a site of cosmic grief.

  • The Myth: When Persephone was abducted by Hades, Demeter wandered the earth in the form of a mortal hag named Doso. She sat by the Callichorum Well in Eleusis, where she was found by the daughters of King Celeus.
  • The "Founding" is marked by the Thesmophoria—the first time a goddess shared a meal with mortals in this region. Players might find the "Laughter-less Stone," the exact rock where Demeter sat, which is said to dampen all sound and magic nearby.

2. The Era of the Prince-God: Triptolemus

The transition from a small village to a regional power happened through a divine "tech-leap": Agriculture.

  • The Gift of the Grain: Demeter chose the Eleusinian prince Triptolemus to spread the knowledge of sowing and harvesting. He was given a chariot drawn by dragons to fly across the world.
  • The Expansion: Because Eleusis held the "patent" on wheat, it became the wealthiest city in the Thriasian Plain. This era saw the construction of the first Telesterion, a temple designed not for a statue, but for a crowd to witness a secret.

3. The War of the Two Kings (The Athenian Rivalry)

Before the Trojan War, Eleusis was a sovereign power that nearly crushed Athens.

  • Eumolpus vs. Erechtheus: King Eumolpus, a son of Poseidon and High Priest of Eleusis, led a massive Thracian and Eleusinian army against King Erechtheus of Athens.
  • The Compromise: The war was so bloody the gods intervened. Athens won politically, but Eleusis won spiritually. It was decreed that while Athens would lead the military, Eleusis would forever control the Mysteries. This created a unique "City-State within a City-State" dynamic

4. The Pre-Trojan War Expansion

As the Mycenaean "Heroic Age" reached its peak, Eleusis became the spiritual filter for the Great Houses.

  • The Purification of Heracles: Before Heracles could descend into the Underworld for his 12th Labor, he had to come to Eleusis to be purified. This established the city as the only place where "Blood-Guilt" (the sin of killing) could be truly washed away.
  • The Fortress-Sanctuary: Massive "Cyclopean" walls were reinforced around the Hieron to protect the sacred grain stores from the growing instability in the Peloponnese.

Points of interest

  • The Telesterion: A massive hall built into the side of the hill. Unlike a Greek temple where you stay outside, here, everyone goes in to witness a secret.
  • The Ploutonion: A cave entrance on the sanctuary grounds believed to be a physical gateway to the realm of Hades.

Tourism

Eleusis is the premier "tourist" destination of the ancient world.

  • The Lesser Mysteries: Held in spring to purify the soul.
  • The Greater Mysteries: Held in autumn. Travelers come from as far as Crete and Ionia to be "saved" from the fear of death.

Architecture

  • The Megaron Style: The royal palace follows the Mycenaean hearth-centered design.
  • Hidden Chambers: Buildings are designed with "Anaktora" (inner sanctums) that only the High Priest can enter.
  • Limestone and Clay: Most homes are sun-dried brick on stone foundations, painted with murals of stalks of wheat.

Geography

Eleusis sits on a fertile plain (the Thriasian Plain) overlooking the Saronic Gulf, directly across from the island of Salamis.

  • The Sacred Plain: The most fertile land in Attica, whispered to be the first place where grain ever grew.
  • The Thriasian Heights: Low hills to the north that protect the city from cold winds.
  • The Bay of Eleusis: A calm, protected harbor ideal for small Mycenaean galleys.
