Cyclopes
Basic Information
Anatomy
The defining feature is the monocular vision. A single, large, circular eye is set deep in the center of the forehead. Above this eye is a heavy, prominent brow ridge. Their skulls are exceptionally thick, designed to withstand the heat and sparks of the forge or the rough tumble of mountain life.
Biological Traits
- Fire Immunity: Their skin is leathery and virtually immune to non-magical fire.
- Masonry Intuition: They can "smell" flaws in stone, allowing them to stack multi-ton boulders so perfectly that no mortar is required.
- Great Strength: A Cyclops can lift objects that would require a team of twenty men
Genetics and Reproduction
Cyclopes are a biologically "heavy" race. They reproduce slowly, with pregnancies lasting nearly two years. Interestingly, when a Cyclops breeds with a human, the offspring is rarely a "Half-Cyclops"; instead, the child is usually either a standard human or a full Cyclops, a genetic "all-or-nothing" trait.
Growth Rate & Stages
- Infancy: Born with a closed eye; they are nearly blind for the first three years.
- The Apprentice (Age 20-50): The period where they develop their craft, whether it be herding or masonry.
- The Master (Age 100+): When their physical size and magical resonance reach their peak.
Ecology and Habitats
They prefer volcanic environments or rugged, limestone islands. The Elder Cyclopes dwell within Mount Etna or beneath the island of Lemnos, using the earth’s core as their furnace. The Shepherd variety prefers coastal caves with high ceilings to accommodate their height.
Dietary Needs and Habits
The Elder smiths consume "ambrosial soot"—the vapors of divine metals. The wilder Shepherds are carnivorous, favoring goat, sheep, and the occasional unlucky sailor. They are famous for their production of thick, potent sheep's milk cheese.
Biological Cycle
Cyclopes have a slow metabolism. They can go weeks without eating if they are deep in the "trance of the forge," but when they do eat, they consume massive quantities of calories in a single sitting.
Behaviour
Behavior varies by lineage. The Smith-Cyclopes are disciplined and stoic, valuing craftsmanship above all. The Shepherds are solitary and antisocial, viewing laws and community as a weakness of "the little people."
Additional Information
Social Structure
The Smiths live in a Master-Apprentice Hierarchy. The Shepherds are Anarchic, living in isolated family units with no central government or king.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
The products of the Cyclopes are the greatest treasures in mythology: Zeus’s Thunderbolt, Poseidon’s Trident, and Hades’ Helm of Invisibility. To own "Cyclopean Steel" is to own a weapon that will never blunt.
Facial characteristics
The single eye often glows with a faint internal light. They lack traditional eyebrows, having instead a ridge of coarse hair. Their mouths are wide, filled with large, blocky teeth capable of grinding bone.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Originally from the primordial union of Sky and Earth. Today, they are most common in Sicily, the Lipari Islands, and the caverns of the Peloponnese.
Average Intelligence
Variable. The Smiths possess transcendent engineering intelligence. The Shepherds possess a "low cunning"—they are easily tricked by wordplay (as Odysseus proved) but are experts at survival and animal husbandry.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
While they lack depth perception at short distances, their single eye is highly adapted for thermal vision and tracking movement across vast horizons. The Elder Cyclopes can "see" the flow of energy within metal, allowing them to hammer out divine enchantments with perfect precision.
Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms
Shepherd Cyclopes often host "Wool-Ticks" from their sheep. The Smiths are often accompanied by Fire-Salamanders, which help keep the temperature of their forges consistent.
Civilization and Culture
Culture and Cultural Heritage
Their culture is one of Primal Necessity. To the Smiths, the world is something to be forged. To the Shepherds, the world is something to be harvested. They do not worship the gods—they view them as either cousins or employers.
History
The Elder Cyclopes were imprisoned in Tartarus by Cronus, but were freed by Zeus. In gratitude, they armed the gods, securing the victory of the Olympians over the Titans.
Common Myths and Legends
The most famous is the encounter between Odysseus and Polyphemus, where the hero used wine and the name "Nobody" to blind the giant and escape beneath the bellies of sheep.
They are massive, standing between 12 and 18 feet tall. Their arms are disproportionately long and muscular, optimized for swinging heavy smithing hammers or hurling boulders.
