Catoblepas
Basic Information
Anatomy
It resembles a bloated, dark-scaled buffalo with the head of a boar and the neck of a wilted lily. Its head is disproportionately massive, filled with dense bone and toxic glands, causing it to always hang low toward the soil.
Biological Traits
- Death-Gaze: If it manages to lift its eyes and meet yours, you die instantly (CON Save in TTRPG terms).
- Miasmic Breath: Creates a 20ft aura of poison gas.
- Thick Hide: Immune to all poisons and acid.
Genetics and Reproduction
They are hermaphroditic and solitary. Once every fifty years, they leave a single, leathery egg in a salt crust. The hatchling is born with a light head, only becoming "The Gazer" once it reaches maturity and its neck muscles fail.
Growth Rate & Stages
- The Calf: Small, quick, and harmless.
- The Burdening: At age 10, the head begins to grow rapidly.
- The Mature Gazer: Age 20+. The head remains permanently down.
Ecology and Habitats
They live in poisonous bogs and sulfur springs on the Libyan border. They are "Landscape Killers"—wherever they stay for more than a day, the grass turns black and the water becomes undrinkable.
Dietary Needs and Habits
They eat poisonous shrubs and carrion. Because their breath is lethal, they often just stand near a watering hole and wait for animals to drop dead from the fumes before slowly consuming them.
Biological Cycle
Extremely slow. They move only a few hundred yards a day. They spend most of their time in a semi-comatose state, breathing toxins into the soil.
Behaviour
Passive but Deadly. They do not hunt; they simply exist. The danger comes from accidentally crossing their path or startling them into lifting their head.

Social Structure
Solitary. Two Catoblepae in the same bog will eventually poison each other to death.

Their eyes can be harvested to create "Potions of True Death" or mirrors that can petrify enemies.

Low. They are purely instinctual, driven by hunger and the need for shade.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
It is nearly blind due to its downward gaze, but its Scent of Decay is unmatched. It can smell water—or a fresh corpse—through miles of heat haze. Its hearing is localized to the ground, picking up footsteps through the earth.

Medium-to-large, standing about 5 feet at the shoulder, but weighing as much as a small elephant.
