Sensativity, Safety, and Comfort

People in Granmont behave more or less the same as people in the real world. Or rather portraying them that way is what I strive for. This means that most people are just trying to get through their day. But there are also some horrible awful people who do horrible awful thing.   This serves a few purposes. Firstly, it provides antagonists. This is, fundamentally, a game about fighting monsters. Sometimes people are the greatest monster of all. Secondly, it grounds the game. It allows the players to apply the same social and reasoning skills you have from the real world to NPCs and the logic will hold.   Vitally, it needs to be understood that the presence of a concept in this world is not an endorsement of it. More often, its so you have something to cast Fireball at. I see fantasy as a storytelling medium, and so the reality of the secondary world is important to me. However at the same time I'm aware that some (most?) people see fantasy as escapism first. To reconcile this we'll be using "Lines and Veils" safety tools. In short, just because I want to put something in my setting for verisimilitude doesn't mean it has to be present in any given adventure. If there are any topics people are uncomfortable with we can make sure it isn't a focus of the game.   Additionally, even if everyone agrees for a controversial topic to be on the table it may not manifest in the same form it does in the real world. Would people really discriminate based off the color of one's skin in a world with orcs and dwarves? Would transphobia exist if you can flawlessly alter your body with polymorph? I'm not George RR Martin, I don't put fucked up shit in my story because it's my fetish.
