Kings of the Jungle

The city's official minimum rate for bonded silver sits at one silver per day, as set by Guild authorities. Beaumont Mines' generous salary of one gold coin per weeks worth of labor draws aspiring workers seeking their fortune from the rural corners of Baudelaire.   At first this seems an enticing oppoertunity, surpassing the minimum wage by three silver a week. But, a closer look at an individual named Demitrius: Over the past two years he's experienced an all-too-common series of unfortunate events. First he spent three months bedridden due to Heavy Blood--a common form of mine poisoning--rendering him unable to work. After recovering he was back at work for barely two months before a tunnel collapse shattered his legs, rendering him unable to work for another eight months even with the best healing he could access. This long recovery cost him his job, leading to another two months waiting in the longn queues of the Beaumont Group Eployment Offices, hoping for another opportunity.   Finally, he managed to secure a job, but it came at the expense of another unfortunate soul who had been injured in the mines. This elucidates the precarious nature of employment at Beaumont Mines. The risk of injury or death looms over every worker and the consequences are severe. Imagine reaching your twelfth consecutive week of working eithy grueling hours in the mines. If you fail to meet this demanding quota you lose your weekly bonus, getting knocked down to minimum wage. Or you reach it, secure you pay, and return to work even more exhausted and battered down the next day.   And speaking of your pay, the Beaumont Group insists on cheques instead of coin. There are places to cash it nearby of course, the taverns of the neighborhood, but as a rule of those saloons you have to buy a drink if you loitered and take they their time dispensing the silvers, of which they took a cut as a fee for the convienance. And if a pal comes in and buys you a round, and you're obliged to buy him one which can quickly become, and the Beaumont Group owns have the taverns and all of the good ones.   Yes, the Beaumonts know how to turn a quick profit. The mine carts that carry ore to the surface are said to run on a strict timetable with quotas met. When the Beaumonts want to squeeze a little more out of their mines they quicken the cadence of the carts, pushing miners to labor more in less time, for less pay.
