Duels

Dueling in Baudelaire is legal only for the nobility. As the goal of a duel is to gain satisfaction and restore one's honor, the practice is limit to the upper classes and only within that class; challenging clergy is prohibited, and as there is no way for a commoner to truly challenge a nobleman's honor they cannot be challenged as well. A nobleman need not sully his hands in a challenge with a commoner and perceived slights are more likely to be punished directly by a retainer or bonded knight.   Despite legal dueling being reserved for nobility, lower classes will emulate these practices and duel amongst themselves.
