Brimstone
Brimstone (sulfur) is a vital ingredient of Black Powder. Without it, the compound will not ignite.
Brimstone is also used to create sulfides for industrial purposes, and is vital for brimstone matches.
Properties
Physical & Chemical Properties
Brimstone is highly flammable and insoluble in water. Because it easily bonds to other elements to form sulfides, it is also very corrosive.
Geology & Geography
Brimstone can be mined from underground deposits, refined from pyrites, or found in volcanic deposits.
History & Usage
Cultural Significance and Usage
It has been commonly used as an ingredient in pyrotechnics for cultural festivals or religious rites.
Hazards
Its flammability requires careful handling. It is considered a dangerous cargo.
Reusability & Recycling
Because its use will burn/bond or otherwise change the elemental compound, it is not reusable, leading to an ongoing demand for more.
Distribution
Trade & Market
Approximately three fourths of the marketable brimstone is produced by mining and refinement operations in Hammerdelve. Secondary producers are Elai, and Savagar, though there are small, scattered, and largely insignificant operations wherever it can be found naturally.
Storage
Brimstone should not be stored in metal containers due to its corrosive effects. It must be kept away from anything that will react with it, especially ignition sources.
Powdered forms must be kept in tightly sealed containers, otherwise it may contaminate nearby surfaces. Damping with water may reduce dispersion.
Law & Regulation
Since the rise in use of Black Powder in weaponry, a network of trade agreements, regulations, and treaties has been woven around its shipment and trade between kingdoms. The T'Bik Arcanum has been particularly invested into more tightly regulating its distribution, to the point that it is very difficult to obtain within its borders, leading to disruptions of household and industrial uses.

Elemental / Molecular
Odor
In pure form it has no smell, but when burned it has a distinct and usually powerful stench, often compared to rotten eggs.
Taste
Pure brimstone is tasteless.
Color
Purified brimstone is bright yellow in color, but can present as a dull gold in impure pyrites, known as "fool's gold."
