Umbral Iron is a rare, shadow-infused metal that absorbs light, giving it a dark, muted sheen. Found deep within the caverns of Gam Badur, this metal is prized for its unique interaction with magic, especially enchantments related to stealth, darkness, and planar manipulation. Legends suggest that it originates from a time when the boundary between the Material Plane and the Shadowfell was thinner, leaving traces of its energy trapped in subterranean deposits.

Umbral Iron is naturally attuned to shadow magic, allowing it to absorb or dampen ambient light and it has a unique interaction with sound, slightly muffling vibrations when struck. When forged into weapons, it is known to ignore certain magical defenses, phasing slightly through lesser magical barriers. It also resists divination magic, making it ideal for crafting enchanted armor that conceals the wearer from magical detection.
Geology & Geography
The primary location is within Gam Badur’s deep mines and rarely in other dwarven-claimed territories with high magical saturation. Outside of Gam Badur it is found exclusively underground, typically near ley lines or areas with a residual connection to the Shadowfell.

History
Dwarven scholars believe that Umbral Iron first appeared when a catastrophic planar breach occurred deep within the earth, allowing fragments of the Shadowfell to manifest within the stone. Some legends even suggest that the metal is the crystallized remains of ancient shadow creatures that perished upon crossing into the Material Plane. It has long been associated with assassins, spies, and the forgotten sects of magic users who seek to operate unseen.
Everyday use
Typically, it is favored for silent, enchanted blades and projectiles due to its ability to dull sound. It is also used to craft stealth-enhancing armor that reduces a wearer’s magical visibility. It is often incorporated into rings or amulets that grant resistance to detection spells.

Phantom Cleaver (Rare Shortsword)
This blade hums with the energy of the Shadowfell. When swung, it leaves a trailing arc of darkness in the air, distorting vision and making it difficult to track the wielder's movements.
Effects:
- On a hit, the target must make a Constitution saving throw or become blinded for one round.
- The wielder can use a bonus action to momentarily become incorporeal, allowing them to pass through non-magical barriers.
Umbral Spines (Uncommon Throwing Daggers)
A set of daggers made from pure Umbral Iron, designed for assassins. These weapons vanish into shadow upon impact and reappear in the wielder’s hand after a moment.
Effects:
- Any creature struck by an Umbral Spine has their screams muffled, making them unable to cry out for help.
- The daggers return to the wielder’s hand at the start of their next turn.
Nightveiled Aegis (Rare Half-Plate Armor)
This dark metal armor absorbs ambient light, blending the wearer into the shadows.
Effects:
- Grants advantage on Stealth checks in dim light or darkness.
- The wearer cannot be detected via divination magic or scrying.
- If struck by a critical hit, the armor instantly casts Blur on the wearer as a reaction
Veilguard Cloak (Uncommon Cloak)
A cloak lined with Umbral Iron filaments, making it unnaturally difficult to perceive the wearer.
Effects:
- Provides a +2 bonus to Stealth checks.
- The wearer can use an action to become invisible for up to 1 minute (recharges after a long rest).
Ring of the Shadowborn (Rare Ring)
A ring embedded with a small shard of Umbral Iron, allowing the wearer to step between the Material Plane and the Shadowfell briefly.
Effects:
- Once per short rest, the wearer can teleport up to 30 feet as a bonus action, leaving behind a shadowy duplicate that lasts for one round.
- Grants darkvision up to 120 feet.
Ring of the Unseen Veil (Very Rare Ring)
A band of Umbral Iron engraved with shifting runes that seem to vanish when not observed directly. The ring grants the wearer complete immunity to magical detection, making them effectively invisible to divination spells and effects.
Effects:
- The wearer is immune to divination magic, including spells like Detect Magic, See Invisibility, True Seeing, Scrying, Locate Object, and Detect Thoughts.
- Any attempt to track the wearer magically fails as if they do not exist.
- If the wearer enters an anti-magic field, the ring momentarily flickers, but its protection remains intact.
- Once attuned if the ring is removed or destroyed, the ring crumbles into a formless black mist, making it impossible to recover.
Hazards
Some claim that prolonged exposure to Umbral Iron causes a feeling of detachment, paranoia, or an increased sensitivity to darkness. Improperly smelting Umbral Iron can cause the metal to fracture or dissipate into shadowy mist, rendering it useless.

While not outright illegal, Umbral Iron is strictly regulated, and many nations require licenses for its trade due to its common use in stealth-related enchantments.
Storage
No special requirements, though prolonged exposure to bright sunlight is believed to reduce its potency over long periods. Some blacksmiths store it in magically sealed containers to maintain its shadow-infused nature.
Law & Regulation
Unauthorized possession of raw Umbral Iron in some regions is considered suspicious and may lead to investigation and the Rune Carver's Guild in Gam Badur control nearly all legal trade of umbral iron. Weapons and armor made from it may also require special documentation in more lawful cities, particularly in areas with strict magical oversight.
