Frostmane Elk

The Frostmane Elk is a majestic and enduring herbivore that thrives in the frozen tundra of the Nevermelting Fields , north of the mountains. With its dense, snow-white coat and radiant antlers that seem to glow faintly in moonlight, the Frostmane Elk is revered as a symbol of purity and resilience. These elusive creatures are highly respected by the The Skarr Tribe , who associate them with ancient myths of survival and spiritual guidance and when one is killed will utilize every part of the animal.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Frostmane Elk is a large, powerful creature, standing up to 7 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing between 800 and 1,200 pounds. Its thick, double-layered coat provides insulation against freezing temperatures, while its hooves are broad and splayed to allow for easy movement across deep snow. The elk’s antlers are its most distinctive feature, growing up to 6 feet across and giving off a faint luminescent glow, especially under moonlight or during the aurora. These antlers, which are shed and regrown annually, are believed to store magical energy absorbed from the environment. The elk’s piercing blue eyes are adapted for excellent vision in low-light conditions, while its large, sensitive nostrils can detect predators or food sources from great distances. Its muscular frame is built for endurance, allowing it to traverse vast icy plains with ease.

Genetics and Reproduction

The Frostmane Elk has adapted to its harsh environment through genetic traits such as its unique coat pigmentation and cold resistance. Its luminous antlers are a result of crystalline deposits within the bone, thought to channel latent magical energy from the tundra. Mating season occurs during late winter (at least late winter outside of the fields), with males engaging in spectacular antler clashes to compete for mates. The victorious male mates with several females, who give birth to a single calf after an eight-month gestation period. Calves are born with light gray coats that gradually turn white as they mature.

Growth Rate & Stages

Frostmane Elk calves are highly resilient from birth, standing and walking within hours. They remain with their mothers for the first year, learning survival techniques and foraging skills. By their second winter, young elk begin to develop their first small antlers, marking their transition to adolescence. Full maturity is reached at around three years, with males growing their signature radiant antlers by this stage. Frostmane Elks can live up to 25 years in the wild.

Ecology and Habitats

The Frostmane Elk is perfectly adapted to the frozen tundra of the Nevermelting Fields. It feeds on hardy tundra grasses, lichen, and bark, using its powerful hooves to dig through snow. The elk is both a grazer and a browser, ensuring it can find sustenance even during the lean winter months.
