Cloak of the Wraithbound
This eerie, tattered cloak is woven with threads soaked in Shadow Ichor, giving it a constantly shifting, semi-ethereal appearance. Dark wisps of shadow drift from its edges, and in dim light, faint whispers of lost souls can be heard emanating from it. The wearer of this cloak is perpetually connected to the echoes of the dead, gaining ghostly abilities but also drawing the attention of lingering spirits.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Due to the necrotic nature of the ichor soaked into the fibers of the cloak, you gain resistance to necrotic damage. You can cast Speak with Dead once per day using the cloak, allowing you to commune with lingering spirits for knowledge. Once per day, if you are reduced to 0 HP, the cloak surges with necrotic energy. This effect immediately summons a spectral wraith for 1 minute, bound to fight alongside you. The wraith is not under your control, but it will attack your enemies before fading.
History
Legends tell of the first Wraithbound Cloak being crafted by a shadowmancer who sought to become one with the spirits of the dead. By weaving Shadow Ichor into enchanted fabric, they fused their own soul into the cloak, achieving a state between life and death. Worn by gravewalkers, necromancers, and rogue specters, the Cloak of the Wraithbound is both a boon and a burden. The spirits within it whisper secrets, yet some believe that wearing the cloak too long allows the dead to claim you.
Whenever you stand in a location where a creature has died within the past day, the cloak subtly reacts, causing faint, ghostly murmurs to drift around you. By focusing for one minute, you can attune to the lingering echoes of the fallen, gaining insight into what happened.
The rogue crouches over a freshly slain nobleman, their lifeblood still pooling onto the cobblestone. As the rogue stands, the Cloak of the Wraithbound shivers slightly, its tattered edges drifting unnaturally in the still air.
A faint whisper echoes in their ear, not in words, but in sensation—a sharp gasp of shock, the cold press of a dagger between ribs, the rasp of breath stolen too soon. The rogue focuses, and suddenly, a flickering image flashes in their mind—a hooded figure, standing behind the noble, silver blade catching the moonlight. The moment fades, but the rogue now has a lead.
The rogue rolls Investigation or Insight with advantage to deduce the murder weapon or identify the killer’s movements before the crime.
