Reputation System

Reputation is a subsystem that tracks how various factions think about your characters. Your party gains or loses reputation as a group. Favors are actions done that a faction approves of that may gain reputation, while disservices are actions done that may upset a faction and lose reputation.

Favors and Disservices

There are three levels of favors.

  • Minor favors are simple, basic tasks that don't take too much effort for a PC to perform or much time at the table. Minor favors grant 1 Reputation Point.
  • Moderate favors require a significant amount of effort and often take up a session or a noticeable chunk of a single session to complete. Moderate favors grant 2 Reputation Points.
  • Major favors are a sizable endeavor, typically an entire quest involving several sessions. Major favors grant 5 Reputation Points.

There are likewise three levels of disservice.

  • Minor disservices could be small but significant missteps, or accumulated slights and inconveniences. Minor disservices take away 1 Reputation Point.
  • Moderate disservices are more than just a nuisance or annoyance, generally significantly hindering the group's efforts or violating a fundamental tenet of the group's beliefs in a significant but not egregious way. Moderate disservices take away 2 Reputation Points.
  • Major disservices are incredibly antagonistic to a group, usually a single brazen act, such as thwarting a cult's apocalyptic doomsday plan. Major disservices take away at least 5 Reputation Points, or more if they are particularly egregious. They might be so terrible that the PCs immediately lose all their Reputation Points and then lose 5 more Reputation Points.

Levels of Reputation

There are several levels of reputation. Most factions begin with a level of "Ignored". Reputation maxes at 50 and minimizes at -50.

Factions of Sandpoint

The following factions are known to be active in Sandpoint:

  • Bunyip Club: This group consists of an organized band of criminals led by Jubrayl Vhiski and is the closest thing in Sandpoint to a thieves’ guild. Their members rarely engage in violent crime, and while their actions in town are more of a nuisance than a threat, rumors say that the Bunyip Club holds more power over Sandpoint than anyone expects. The Bunyip Club allegedly keeps a secret hideout somewhere in the old smuggling tunnels below Sandpoint.
  • Sandpoint Scholars: This is a loose affiliation of those interested in the Old Light and other ruins around Varisia. They have collected lore and tales about ancient Thassilon while also looking out for new problems associated with that ancient legacy. The Scholars meet on the first day of each season at Brodert Quink’s home to share rumors and news, though these gatherings are more social visits than symposiums.
  • Sandpoint Clerisy: Sandpoint’s current religious leader is Abstalar Zantus, an elderly man who assumed his position upon the death of Sandpoint's previous High Priest five years ago. The new Sandpoint Cathedral, where the Clerisy is based, is the largest building in town.
  • Sandpoint Mercantile League: The oldest faction in town is the Sandpoint Mercantile League. Originally formed by the town’s four founding families, the Mercantile League today counts most of Sandpoint’s merchants, innkeepers, and providers among its number. The Sandpoint Mercantile League bases its operations out of a large building near the town’s waterfront.
  • Scarnetti Family: While Titus Scarnetti is technically a member of the Sandpoint Mercantile League due to his position as heir to one of the founding families of Sandpoint, it is an open secret that he eschews that cooperative organization in favor of power for his family, which are for all practical purposes rivals to the League. The Scarnetti Consortium is run by the Scarnettis themselves from their manor.
  • Town Watch: Sheriff Belor Hemlock commands the town watch. The town watch patrols both the settlement’s streets and the roads through its hinterlands, and are responsible for the safety of the citizens. The town watch is based out of the Sandpoint Garrison.
  • Townsfolk: Finally, there are the townsfolk themselves, ably represented by their mayor, Kendra Deverin. Kendra keeps a manor to the south of town, but the business of running Sandpoint and seeing to the needs of its people is focused in the town hall.
