Satsui (a.k.a. Jack the Grin)

Mental characteristics

Personal history

  • Born in Tian Xia, Satsui lived in the mountains with his mother and father. They were a family of farmers.
  • One night, bandits came to the homestead. Mother saw them coming and had Satsui hide. Head bandit was looking for revenge. Satsui’s father had been an assassin and had killed Bandit’s father. Bandit challenged Father to a fight to the death. Father was a step slower, was being dismantled. Mother told Satsui to run. They ran. Satsui turned around and watched his homestead burn while they strung up Father by the neck.
  • They hid away in a cave. Cold, wet. Mother became sick. Satsui was angry at Father for lying and became moreso every day. One evening, overcome with fever, Mother confessed that she knew about Father’s past. Enraged, Satsui left her.
  • Kaigo (tiefling assassin) had trained Father. Found Satsui and offered to train him too. The young man accepted, became trained in the dark arts.
  • As a final test, Kaigo told Satsui where to find Bandit Leader.
  • Satsui killed Bandit Leader, then learned that he had some powerful allies. Satsui forced to flee. Bandit’s brother, a former samurai, tracked him down and scored what should have been a decapitating blow but due to the curse hex he slashed Satsui across the left side of the face from the corner of his mouth to his ear. A second cut opened his chest. Satsui flew over the side of the waterfall and appeared to fall to his death.
  • He survived, walked for months before finding a village. From the village, he caught a boat to Riddleport.
  • Wanted to make a name for himself, and heard Clegg Zincher was one of the top crime bosses in Riddleport. Clegg didn’t like the name Satsui, he called him Jack instead. Because of his facial scar looking like a smirking grin, Clegg called him Jack the Grin.
  • Jack’s first target for Clegg was Reh’s father Damian. It wasn’t until after the hit that Jack discovered why Damian was killed. The man had refused to make a ring for him so Clegg had him killed. He kept the ring and still has it. Clegg insisted he be stabbed in the stomach to make him suffer a bit. Once he knew why he was being killed, he was to be shot in the heart.
  • Clegg didn’t trust Jack so he sent Jack with a team to Kaer Maga. A cleric had crossed Clegg and so he needed to be put down. As they made their way to the church, Clegg’s crew jumped Jack, stabbed him in the back. Jack fought them off and tried to escape. One of them panicked and smashed a bottle of alchemical fire over his head, setting him ablaze. He ended up crawling into the church of the cleric he was supposedly sent to kill - a cleric of Zon Kuthon.
  • The cleric of Zon Kuthon stood by and watched Jack put the fire out with his own blood. He was amused and said Jack had obviously made some terrible life choices. He cast a spell on him that set him ablaze in the flames of the Abyss and showed him what awaited him in the afterlife. Between the pain, his near death, and the horrors he saw in the afterlife (true or not), Jack began to regret what he had done. He was scared into letting go of his hatred. Some of it, anyway.
  • Jack stayed in Kaer Maga for years, plying his trade while trying to do so ethically.
  • He came back to Riddleport and, over time, killed the men who had tried to kill him.
  • The next one on Jack’s list was Clegg. Elias got wind of Jack and reached out to him. Elias wasn’t ready to deal with the fallout that would come with Clegg’s demise. Best to wait, bide their time, Until then, plenty of work for Jack to do.
  • They came up with a cover story. Satsui was attacked by pirates and set on fire, thrown overboard. He disguises his appearance or wears a mask because he is still horribly burned. Jack is not comfortable with anyone seeing his burns.
  • Satsui took lessons at the lodge but also travels to look for historical items.
  • He would always read as evil because, as he put it, he had done some very, very horrible things. Particularly to the men who hurt him. He can’t be redeemed for that because he does not regret what he did. There’s also some blood on his hands that he will never be able to cleanse. Even the gods cannot forgive a man who cannot forgive himself. He just has to live with the stain on his soul.
