Proteus' mother (Tatia) was a priestess of Calistra and "worshipped" out of the House of the silken Veil in Riddleport. She was quite a skilled companion and was a "quickwife" for many of Riddleports' "who's who". Although never taking a husband, Tatia did give birth to two children (Valerique and Proteus) although she never told her children who their fathers were. Proteus was a very protective older brother (only older by a couple years) and definitely had a temper. Valerique, on the other hand, was very gentle and soft spoken. Both children were very smart and Tatia immediately had both children in the best schooling. They both demonstrated arcane talents, although Proteus wasn't as focussed as Valerique. Tatia enlisted them both with the cyphermages for training.
While Valerique was determined to be a cyphermage, Proteus was pulled toward different magics. He met a Shoanti tattoo artist and was fascinated by the craft. The cyphermages weren't as impressed by the shoanti distractions and starting causing problems for both Proteus and Valerique. To protect his sister, Proteus left the program. In defiance to both the cyphermages and his mother, Proteus crafted a tattoo of a wasp on his shoulder (the holy symbol of Calistra, but more of a shame item as his mother was very much about looking respectable). Tatia realized quite quickly that Proteus was not interested in the cyphermage and decided to involve him in her espionage work. You see, part of being a worshipper of Calistra in the House of the Silken Veil was controlling information. Proteus had an affinity for magic, and used his talents to help his mother gain even further notoriety in the House.
On the day of the meteor strike, Tatia was with a client on a ship in the harbour. Proteus never found her in the wreckage. Valerique joined the expedition (despite Proteus' numerous objections) to the Devil's Elbow to try and find some answers of what happened to their mother. She promised she'd come back with some answers. She broke that promise.
