Miniature 16X Scope

Miniature 16X Scope

Model Description

The GoatGuns Miniature 16X Scope is modeled off something, will need to do some research to see if I can figure out what one. It is a painted die cast metal with no lenses.

History of the Telescopic Rifle Scope

The Earliest known Rifle Scope can be traced back to January 1776, when a painter named Charles Wilson Peale who was friends with an astronomer, David Rittenhouse, together decided to mount a telescope to a gun. Firearms from this era did not have much use for optics since they lacked the range in precision to make them useful. Later, in 1835 a civil engineer named John R. Chapman developed a rifle scope using a steel tube, a far more reliable attempt to earlier brass designs. He worked with a precision rifle maker named Morgan James and in 1840 they released the Chapman James Scope to the market. The glass for these was imported from either France or Britan with made the scopes cost more than the rifles they were mounted on.

In 1855 a new sight was produced by a man named William Malcolm. His model had numerous improvements including Achromatic Lenses and is said to be the ancestor of the modern rifle scope. Malcolms scopes were among the first fielded in military service during the American Civil War. It was Winchester in 1917 that developed a mounting system like the crescent cut Unertl blocks we see today. In 1922 J. W. Fecker started a company making sights with a mobile erector unit, this is an internal moving lens group to adjust focus where previously the front lens would be what was changed. In 1925 he introduces internal clicking mechanisms for the turrets that adjust elevation and windage.
