Psychopomp Species in Glüm | World Anvil

Psychopomp

A Psychopomp is a form of spirit tasked with shepherding a Soul from one plane of Creation to another upon death. Instead of being a unified species, or even type of spirit, they are more of a description, as the nature of a Psychopomp appears to be related in form and function with the Soul it is reaping, though the specifics are unclear. Whatever the case of their origins, all Psychopomps share the abilities of planar travel and telepathy with their reaped Soul.   Some scholars believe that Psychopomps are formed out of the Song of Creation at the moment of death, as a reaction of the Song's awareness of itself changing fundamentally. This awareness is believed to manifest in a way conforming to the expectations of the deceased Soul — like a mirror reflecting a mirror — as the last creative breath of the sentient being before it is returned to the Song. Therefore, these scholars believe that a Psychopomp exists only briefly, to ferry a single Soul back to the Song, wherein it too is likely destroyed and recycled.   However, if the above theory is true, then those who believe a different process occurs after death may find that their Psychopomp takes them elsewhere, perhaps explaining why some Souls end up in other planes after death. Some particularly radical scholars have even proposed that the Gods themselves may be such Psychopomps, who long ago went rogue after convincing their Souls to reside elsewhere after death, and in turn hoarding power from subsequently reaped Souls.   Religious and magical scholars are hotly divided on this entire topic, and it has been the subject of thousands of years of debate, censorship, war, and strife.
