The Ashford Family

Location: Herb Cottage (near the forest’s edge)

The Ashfords are a family viewed with a mix of respect and unease. Mira Ashford, the village herbalist, is trusted in times of need but feared in times of doubt. Her knowledge of herbs, healing, and the forest has saved many lives, yet some whisper that she knows things no ordinary woman should. She keeps mostly to herself, avoiding unnecessary conflict, but the village has not forgotten that the forest always takes its due, and Mira walks closer to it than most.

Her daughter, Lina Ashford, is bright, curious, and a cause for concern. While she does not look unnatural, something about her feels different—a sharpness to her gaze, a sense that she listens to things others cannot hear. The village wonders about her father, as Mira has never spoken of him, and this uncertainty only deepens the air of mystery surrounding them.

The Ashfords are useful, but separate. The village needs them, but trust in them is conditional—if things turn dark, the same hands that seek Mira’s healing may one day point to her as the cause of the village’s woes.

Mira Ashford

Middle-aged herbalist, skilled in woodlore.

Role: A wise woman and healer, Mira has long served the village with her knowledge of herbs and remedies. She is deeply connected to the natural world and has always believed in the witches’ protective presence. As the forest darkens, she is one of the few who still holds faith that Agatha and Selene will restore balance if given the chance.

Personality: Mira is calm, patient, and fiercely loyal to the village. She is a voice of reason amid the growing hysteria and strives to calm the more superstitious villagers. She believes in peace and diplomacy, urging others to seek the witches' aid rather than turn against them.

Beliefs: Mira insists that the village should support Agatha and help Selene recover from whatever ailment has befallen her. She is highly suspicious of Isolde but hopes that the witches' family bond can be restored before it's too late.

Secret: Mira once apprenticed with the witches. When Mira was young, Agatha taught her many of the herbal remedies and charms she uses today, but Mira left after an argument with Isolde, who envied Mira's skill and connection to Agatha. Mira hides her past with the witches from most of the village, fearing it might lead them to turn on her if they knew she was once close to them.

Implication: If this secret were revealed, Mira’s standing in the village could be jeopardized, and it would complicate her current position as a mediator. It also gives her deeper personal stakes in restoring Agatha and Selene to power, as she feels responsible for the conflict with Isolde.

Trusted Friends & Allies:

Old Man Cedric (Village Elder) – One of Mira’s closest confidants. Cedric shares her knowledge of the Old Ways and respects her wisdom. They speak in hushed tones of the village’s decline, the forest’s corruption, and the dangers creeping closer.

Ronan Thatcher (Blacksmith & Village Leader) – Though Ronan believes in practical solutions over superstition, he considers Mira a friend. While he doesn’t fully understand her connection to the forest and the Old Ways, he respects her knowledge and seeks her counsel when needed. They disagree on how to handle the village’s worsening troubles, but he values her insights.

Fiona Stonewell (Farmer’s Wife) – A trusted friend and one of the few villagers who openly supports Mira, even when others whisper. Fiona often seeks remedies for her family and quietly defends Mira when others cast doubt on her.

Eoin Faelan (Carpenter & Father of Liora) – Desperate for a cure for his daughter’s affliction, Eoin has confided in Mira about Liora’s curse. Mira has helped as much as she can, but she knows that breaking the magic at play is beyond simple herbs and potions.

Lina Ashford (Her Daughter) – Mira’s greatest treasure. She teaches Lina the secrets of herbalism and woodlore, hoping to pass down her knowledge. However, she warns her daughter to be careful—the village does not always welcome those who know too much.

Respected but Watched Carefully:

Harlan Dovell (Village Guard & Carpenter) – Harlan does not fear Mira as others do, but he is cautious. He has accepted her medicines in times of need but keeps his distance when whispers of witchcraft start spreading.

Edwin Holloway (Innkeeper) – Mira supplies the Hollow Hearth Inn with herbs, teas, and remedies, and Edwin appreciates her skill. However, he prefers to keep neutral in village conflicts and avoids associating too closely with anyone controversial.

Ivy Holloway (Miller’s Niece) – A curious girl who often watches Mira work and listens closely to her words. Mira sees a troubled soul in Ivy and wonders what secrets she holds.

Opposed or Mistrustful:

Father Lucian Reyne (Village Priest) – Once merely cautious of Mira, Lucian has grown actively hostile, believing her to be a danger to the village’s faith. Unbeknownst to her, Lucian’s mind is no longer his own, twisted by the dark entity. If he could, he would turn the village against her.

Gregor Vane (Wealthy Landowner) – Gregor dismisses Mira as an irrelevant hedge witch, but his wife, Roslyn Vane, watches her carefully, wary of what she might know about their family’s past and ties to the Old Blood.

Iona Briar (Seamstress & Hidden Dark Practitioner) – Mira does not trust Iona. She senses something wrong in the way Iona weaves her charms into cloth and threads, though she has no proof. Iona, in turn, resents Mira’s knowledge and views her as a threat.

Jonas Fenrow (Farmer) – One of the more superstitious villagers, Jonas believes Mira’s remedies are unnatural, possibly tainted by the darkness creeping into the forest. He refuses to accept her help.

Villagers Who Could Turn Against Her:

The Common Folk of Ravenshollow – While many rely on her skills, just as many whisper behind her back. In times of peace, she is simply the village healer. In times of fear, she could become a scapegoat for the village’s misfortunes.

  • True Allegiance: Follower of Agatha.
  • Public Allegiance: Downplays her connection to the witches due to growing mistrust in the village.

Lina Ashford

Age: 15
Mira Ashford’s daughter, herbalist’s apprentice

Personality: Curious, perceptive, and quietly rebellious

Lina Ashford has grown up surrounded by the scent of dried herbs, the pages of old tomes, and whispered warnings from her mother about the dangers of knowing too much. Though she has inherited Mira’s keen knowledge of plants, remedies, and woodlore, she lacks her mother’s caution. Lina is deeply curious about the darker mysteries of the village and the forest, feeling drawn to what others fear.

She often sneaks out to explore the edges of Gloomwood Forest despite her mother’s warnings, believing there are secrets worth uncovering—and that not everything in the forest is evil. She has heard whispers of the Old Ways and wonders if she, too, could wield their power one day.

Lina is friends with Tamsin Holloway, the innkeeper’s daughter, and often confides in her about the things she discovers. However, she is careful not to speak too openly about what she has learned, fearing that if the village turns on her mother, she will be next.

Though still young, Lina is beginning to form her own beliefs about the world, and if events in Ravenshollow take a darker turn, she may have to choose whether to follow in her mother’s cautious footsteps—or forge her own path into the unknown.

Lina Ashford’s unknown parentage ties her to the primal and untamed forces of the forest. Though she appears human, there is something different about her, a subtle but undeniable connection to ancient, wild magic. She may feel the forest’s presence more deeply than others, be drawn to places of old power, or sense things no one else can.

Her father, a woodland elf, was neither corrupted nor kind—he is a being of old laws and forgotten customs, bound to the natural order rather than mortal emotion. He does not yet know of her existence, but if he ever learns, his intentions may not be what she hopes for. Whether he would claim her, test her, or cast her aside remains unknown—but sooner or later, the wild always calls its own home.

Nanette Reedleaf

“The forest is cruel—but it remembers kindness. So I do, too.”

Role in the Village

  • Lives alone in a moss-covered cottage at the southern slope of Ravenshollow, near the old well.
  • Villagers come to her for simple cures, blessing bundles, or charms against nightmares.
  • Some mock her rhymes and riddles, but others swear her tokens keep their children from sleepwalking or their dreams from souring.

Lore-Keeper of the Old Ways

Nanette remembers what others have buried, and may share old tales that others deem superstition.

On Naila:

“She wasn’t made like us. She was shaped by water’s will and sunlight’s laughter. When you heard her song in the reeds, it meant your sorrows would pass—like the river always does.”

On the Witches:

“The witches? There were three once. One for seed, one for root, one for bloom. Then came Isolde. Not of the same weave. She pulls the thread and calls it mending.”

On Isolde:

“She doesn’t speak in dreams like the others. She rides silence. She smiles with no teeth. Be wary of beauty that bends shadows around it.”

On Elara:

“Poor Elara. Grief like that turns sharp. She cuts with it now, but once, she danced.”

Relationship to Others

  • Father Lucian calls her a harmless fool but doesn’t interfere—yet.
  • Cedric visits her in secret, believing her charms carry fragments of truth.
  • Mira Ashford respects her deeply—some of Mira’s early herbal knowledge came from Nanette’s hands.

Nanette’s Nursery Rhyme: “Don’t Drink the Still Water”

(Sung in a slow, lilting cadence, like a lullaby for children who can’t sleep. Often dismissed as nonsense—but a few older villagers find it deeply unsettling.)

“Don’t drink the still water, don’t pluck the red rose,
Don’t dance with the lady whose footprints don’t show.
She’ll braid you in brambles, she’ll laugh in your sleep,
She’ll feed you to thorns that grow teeth when they weep.”

“Don’t follow the laughter that echoes like bells,
It lives in the roots and the old wishing wells.
He’ll trick you with riddles, and twine you in lies,
Then crown you with nettles and thorn-blinded eyes.”

“So sleep with a charm bound in heather and gold,
Let salt mark your windows and stories be told.
For one loves the chaos, the other the hush—
And both leave your bones in the nettlebrush.”

Notes on the Rhyme:

  • The “lady” is Isolde, whose presence leaves no trace, yet binds others through beauty and illusion.
  • The “laughter” is Damos, the trickster Satyr who now delights in twisting joy into torment.
  • Brambles with teeth and thorn crowns suggest the creeping corruption.
  • The ending implies survival through charm-craft, salt wards, and storytelling—Nanette’s way of teaching old protection.

Nanette’s Quiet Tale: “The Three and the Fourth”

Only shared around her hearth, after tea brewed from wild elderflower. She only tells it to those she trusts not to twist the truth.

“Before the forest wept blood and the birds forgot their names, there were three. Not sisters by blood, but by choosing.”
“One bore seed and tended womb. She sang life into roots and bellies. Her name was
Agatha.”
“One bore root and tended bone. She marked graves and stilled the wind. Her name was
Mirelda.”
“One bore bloom and tended joy. She painted petals where sorrow slept. Her name was
Elyra.”

She leans forward, lowering her voice.

“Then came a fourth. Not born of choosing. She arrived with snow in her hair and silence in her mouth. She made flowers bloom that stank of meat. Her name was Isolde, and she brought a mirror.”

“She said she wanted to help. Said she’d mend the forest, help the people, aid the spirits. But what she meant was: she would change it. And the mirror she carried showed only what she wanted you to see.”

“The others faded, scattered, or were lost. The bloom wilted. The roots blackened. The seeds refused to sprout. And still, she weaves.”

Then, softer still:
“And the river… oh, that river sang when she danced. I saw her once, Naila, gleaming like starlight in water. She bent to pick a flower and a trout leapt with joy. She was the music of running water. And now?”

“Now, her song’s been stolen. Chained beneath her own mirror.”

The Holloway Family

The Holloway family is widely regarded as one of the most steady and dependable families in Ravenshollow. As the proprietors of the Hollow Hearth Inn, they are at the heart of village life, offering a warm hearth, strong ale, and a place for travelers and villagers alike to gather. Most see them as honest folk who keep to themselves, neither stirring trouble nor seeking power.

Edwin Holloway is respected for his fairness and level-headed nature, though some wish he would take a firmer stance as the village becomes more divided. Lena Holloway is viewed as sharp and practical, a woman who keeps the inn—and her family—running smoothly. Their daughter, Tamsin, is a source of whispers among the villagers, seen as too curious for her own good, with many fearing that her reckless nature may lead her into danger.

Jasper Holloway, who runs the mill, is known as a hardworking man weighed down by grief. Though some recall his temper in the past, most now pity rather than fear him, recognizing that he is still struggling to rebuild himself after his wife’s death. His heavy drinking draws quiet concern, but as long as the mill keeps running, most turn a blind eye. Ivy Holloway, raised as his daughter, is considered a sweet but reserved girl, though some whisper that she seems haunted by something she does not speak of.

Location 1: Hollow Hearth Inn (Central Ravenshollow)

Edwin Holloway

– The Innkeeper (45)

Innkeeper of the Hollow Hearth Inn, quiet observer, reluctant guardian of village secrets

Edwin Holloway is a calm and steady presence in Ravenshollow, a man who has spent years listening, watching, and keeping his opinions close to his chest. As the owner of the Hollow Hearth Inn, he knows the rhythms of the village, the flow of gossip and tensions, and the faces of those who come and go in the night. He is not a man who seeks power or influence, but one who understands that sometimes survival means knowing when to speak and when to stay silent.

He is married to Lena Holloway, who helps manage the day-to-day operations of the inn. Their relationship is built on pragmatism and quiet understanding, but recent events in Ravenshollow have strained them both. Edwin worries about the dark changes creeping into the village, while Lena insists they keep their heads down and focus on their family. He respects her wisdom but feels a growing divide between them—one born not of bitterness, but of unspoken fears neither wants to put into words.

His greatest concern is their daughter, Tamsin. He sees in her the same reckless curiosity that once led others to ruin, and he fears for her safety. He tries to hold her back, but deep down, he knows she will slip beyond his grasp eventually.

Though he avoids village politics, he cannot ignore the power struggles around him. He mistrusts Gregor Vane’s growing control, finds Father Lucian’s zeal unsettling, and wonders if the old gods still watch over them—or if something else has taken their place.

For now, Edwin walks the careful line of neutrality, but he knows that a time will come when he can no longer stand aside. When that moment arrives, he only hopes he can protect his family from what is to come.

Edwin Holloway is a respected and well-liked figure in Ravenshollow, known for his fairness, hospitality, and careful neutrality in village matters. As the owner of the Hollow Hearth Inn, he interacts with nearly everyone in town, making him a keeper of stories, secrets, and rumors—though he is careful about which ones he chooses to believe. While he prefers to stay out of conflicts, he cannot ignore the growing tensions and dark undercurrents stirring in the village.

He is related to Jasper Holloway, the miller, and often finds himself caught in the middle of village gossip and politics. Edwin is torn between the strange happenings in the village and his need to maintain peace at the inn.

Edwin’s Place in the Village:

Edwin is a steady presence in Ravenshollow—a man who listens, observes, and offers shelter to those in need. While he tries to stay out of conflicts, he is not blind to the dark changes creeping into the village. He feels a responsibility to protect what remains of Ravenshollow’s peace, but neutrality is becoming harder to maintain. If tensions boil over, Edwin may be forced to take a side—whether he is ready to or not.

Trusted Friends & Allies:
  • Old Man Cedric (Village Elder) – One of Edwin’s closest confidants. Though they do not always see eye to eye, Edwin values Cedric’s wisdom and frequently seeks his advice. He worries about the village’s future and trusts Cedric’s insights into Ravenshollow’s deeper troubles.
  • Ronan Thatcher (Blacksmith & Village Leader) – A longtime friend. While Ronan is more decisive and willing to take action, Edwin prefers to watch and listen before making a move. Despite their differences, he respects Ronan’s leadership and would stand by him if the village truly needed it.
  • Fiona Stonewell (Farmer’s Wife & Confidant) – A close friend and frequent visitor to the inn. She has a keen sense of the village’s shifting moods, and Edwin often confides in her. Though he never admits it, he finds her presence a comfort amid the growing unease in Ravenshollow.
  • Tamsin Holloway (His Daughter) – His greatest worry and his greatest joy. He loves her dearly but fears for her curiosity, especially her interest in the forest and old stories. He sees echoes of her late mother in her, which terrifies him, and he does what he can to keep her safe—even if it means holding her back.
  • Iona Briar (Seamstress & Weaver of Subtle Charms) – Edwin finds himself drawn to her in a way he cannot quite explain. Her presence lingers in his mind, and he often finds excuses to pass by her shop or purchase small things he does not need. He does not realize that he is under the influence of one of her weavings, a subtle enchantment that makes him see her as more charming, alluring, and trustworthy than she truly is.
  • Jasper Holloway - Brother and though they do not agree on everything, they are bound by blood and have each others backs. Edwin dearly wishes Jasper would find a new wife to "settle" him down and take him out of his sets of moodswings.
  • Miriam Holloway (Samuel’s Widow) -

Cautious but Cordial:
  • Mira Ashford (Herbalist)Respects her skill but keeps a polite distance. While he appreciates her remedies, he is wary of her deeper knowledge of the Old Ways. He does not judge her outright but would prefer not to be caught in her orbit if the village turned against her.
  • Harlan Dovell (Village Guard & Carpenter) – Has no strong feelings about Harlan but respects his duty to the village. They exchange words over drinks, and while Edwin does not always agree with Harlan’s cautious nature, he values his perspective.
  • Ivy Holloway (Niece, Lives at the Mill)Feels protective of her, though they are not particularly close. He has noticed her troubled demeanor and wonders if she knows something she isn’t saying.
  • Gregor Vane (Wealthy Landowner)Tolerates him but does not trust him. Edwin knows Gregor buys influence and despises how he manipulates others. He keeps interactions strictly business, ensuring that Gregor’s coin never comes with chains attached.
  • Father Lucian Reyne (Village Cleric) – Once a man Edwin trusted, but something has changed. Lucian’s sermons have taken on a harsher, more zealous tone, and the way he speaks of righteousness and purity unsettles Edwin. He still attends services out of habit, but his faith in Lucian has waned.

Mistrust & Growing Concern:
  • Mathis Gravel (Thief & Informant) – Knows Mathis deals in secrets but tolerates him as long as he keeps his tricks away from the inn. If Mathis were to cause trouble, Edwin would not hesitate to throw him out.
  • Jonas Fenrow (Superstitious Farmer) – Edwin dislikes Jonas’ paranoia and the way he spreads fear through the village. He avoids engaging in his wild tales but worries that if fear takes hold, men like Jonas will be the first to throw blame at the innocent.

Innkeeper, experienced and pragmatic.

Tamsin Holloway

Side: Caught in the middle

The Innkeeper’s Daughter (19)

Tamsin Holloway is young, curious, and full of restless energy, drawn to stories, secrets, and things that should remain undisturbed. She loves Ravenshollow but feels trapped within its walls, yearning for something more than the simple life expected of her. She is clever but reckless, unknowingly skirting the edges of danger as she grows increasingly fascinated by the forest, the old ways, and the whispers that others ignore.

Role: Tamsin is a bright, curious young woman who has grown up hearing stories of the witches but never believed in them fully. As the darkness spread, she found herself drawn to the mystery of the forest, and though frightened, she is intrigued by the power Isolde represents.

Personality: Tamsin is adventurous, brave, and a bit reckless. She is fascinated by magic and the supernatural, and though she fears the growing darkness, she is also tempted by it. Her curiosity often leads her into dangerous situations, and she is torn between loyalty to her village and the lure of the unknown.

Beliefs: Tamsin is unsure of what is right or wrong anymore. While she loves her village, part of her wonders if embracing the witches’ power—particularly Isolde’s—could offer a new kind of freedom. She often sneaks out at night to explore the edges of the forest, drawn to its dangerous beauty.

Secret: Tamsin has visions of the witches’ future. Unbeknownst to most, Tamsin has been experiencing prophetic dreams that show her glimpses of the witches' fates. Some nights, she sees Isolde triumphant, ruling over a ruined village. Other nights, she sees Selene rising from her poisoned state to stop her sister. Tamsin fears sharing these visions, unsure of their meaning and worried the villagers will accuse her of witchcraft.

Implication: If Tamsin’s visions were revealed, it could make her a target for both sides of the conflict. Some villagers might see her as a potential witch, while others could try to manipulate her for their own gain. Tamsin herself could struggle with the weight of knowing too much and being unsure how to act on her knowledge.

Trusted Friends & Allies:
  • Lina Ashford (Mira’s Daughter & Close Friend) – Her closest friend and partner in mischief. The two frequently sneak off together, drawn to the mysteries of the forest and village legends. Lina is more cautious, but Tamsin pushes boundaries, eager to uncover the truth behind the superstitions.
  • Ivy Holloway (Cousin, Lives at the Mill) – Tamsin feels a deep kinship with Ivy, sensing that her cousin carries a sadness she does not speak of. They have spent nights whispering secrets, and Tamsin worries for her, though she does not fully understand why.
  • Mira Ashford (Herbalist & Lina’s Mother)Respects her wisdom, though Mira often warns her not to dig too deeply into the unknown. Tamsin sees her as mysterious and powerful but also admires her independence.
  • Old Man Cedric (Village Elder) – Enjoys his stories and old knowledge, but he treats her like a child, which frustrates her. Still, she listens when he speaks and suspects he knows more than he lets on.
  • Mara Wren - Friend and co-explorer

Cautious but Curious:
  • Edwin Holloway (Her Father & Innkeeper)Loves him deeply but feels stifled by his protectiveness. She knows he worries for her, but she resents being watched so closely. Despite her frustrations, she knows he would do anything to keep her safe.
  • Fiona Stonewell (Family Friend & Confidant) – A maternal figure who offers her gentle advice. Fiona often counsels Edwin on how to handle his daughter, and while Tamsin appreciates her kindness, she finds her too cautious.
  • Ronan Thatcher (Blacksmith & Village Leader) – A figure of strength and practicality, whom she both admires and finds frustrating. She sees him as too focused on the present, while she wants to uncover the past and what lies beyond.
  • Harlan Dovell (Village Guard)Sees him as a brother figure and enjoys teasing him. She knows he takes his duties seriously but finds his constant worry over the village’s safety excessive.

Drawn Toward (Unknowingly Dangerous):
  • Iona Briar (Seamstress & Weaver of Dark Magic)Feels an odd pull toward her, though she does not know why. She admires her beauty and elegance, occasionally visiting her shop just to listen to her speak. Unbeknownst to her, Iona has subtly influenced Tamsin with her enchanted weavings, making her more reckless in seeking the unknown.
  • The Forest & Its Mysteries – Tamsin feels the forest calling to her, sensing something waiting to be discovered. She does not yet understand its dangers or the forces lurking within, but her fascination grows stronger every day.

Mistrust & Growing Unease:
  • Father Lucian Reyne (Village Cleric)Does not trust him. His intensity unsettles her, and she feels a strange coldness whenever she is near him. She suspects that he sees her curiosity as dangerous, and she avoids him when possible.
  • Gregor Vane (Wealthy Landowner)Dislikes him instinctively. She has overheard her father and others speaking about him in hushed tones, and she sees something hollow in his smile.
  • Jonas Fenrow (Superstitious Farmer) – Thinks he is full of fear and nonsense. She has heard his paranoid rants about curses and dark omens and dismisses him as a fool.

Tamsin’s Place in the Village:

Tamsin is a bright spark in a darkening village, full of reckless curiosity and untamed spirit. She is walking the edge of discovery and danger, unknowingly tugging at the threads of secrets buried deep. If left unchecked, she may find herself entangled in forces far beyond her understanding—or worse, draw the village into something it cannot escape.

Lena Holloway

Age: Mid-40s
Co-owner of the Hollow Hearth Inn, pragmatic and protective

Lena Holloway is a practical and sharp-eyed woman who keeps the inn running smoothly while ensuring her family stays out of trouble and village conflicts. She loves her husband, Edwin, but disagrees with his quiet worrying, believing that staying neutral is the only way to keep their family safe.

She watches over Tamsin with a firm but weary hand, trying to rein in her daughter’s curiosity before it leads her somewhere dangerous. Though she avoids gossip, she is far from ignorant—Lena sees more than she lets on, and she knows Ravenshollow is changing, even if she refuses to say it aloud.

Edwin’s practical and supportive wife.

Location 2: Holloway Mill (North by the river)

Jasper Holloway

Age: Early 50s
Miller of Holloway Mill, grieving but respected

Jasper Holloway is a hardworking but weary man, carrying the weight of loss and regret. Since his wife's passing, he has struggled with grief, often drowning his sorrow in drink, but he remains dedicated to his work at Holloway Mill, ensuring the village’s grain supply keeps flowing. Though his temper sometimes flares, most in Ravenshollow see him more with concern than fear, knowing that he was once a steadfast and well-loved member of the community.

His deepest devotion is to Ivy Holloway, whom he believes to be his daughter. She is his anchor, though he wrestles with guilt, feeling that his grief has kept him from being the father she deserves. Yet unknown to him, Ivy is actually Gregor Vane’s daughter—a truth that, if discovered, could shatter what little stability he has left.

The miller, hardworking and quiet.

Ivy Holloway

Jasper’s timid daughter

Side: Caught in the middle

– Tamsin’s Cousin (17)

Role: Ivy is Tamsin Holloway’s younger cousin, a bright and curious girl who idolizes her older cousin’s sense of adventure. Unlike Tamsin, who is drawn to the mystery of the witches, Ivy is frightened by the changes in the village.

Personality: Innocent, timid, and kind-hearted, Ivy is easily spooked by the darkness surrounding the village. She often follows Tamsin into trouble but lacks her cousin’s daring nature.

Connection: Ivy tries to keep Tamsin grounded, often warning her against venturing too far into the woods. However, Ivy’s fear makes her an easy target for those who want to manipulate her for their own ends, and she’s caught between trusting her cousin and the growing fear in the village. She lives at the man she believes to be her father, at the mill

Secret: Ivy is the illegitimate daughter of Gregor Vane. Unbeknownst to Tamsin or even her mother, Ivy is the result of an affair between her mother and Gregor Vane years ago. This secret has been kept from the village and even from Ivy herself, but Gregor knows the truth and has quietly ensured that Ivy’s family is always taken care of. He fears that if the secret were ever revealed, his carefully built empire would crumble.

Implication: If Ivy’s true parentage were revealed, it would create chaos in both the Vane family and the Holloway family. It could also lead to a moral dilemma for Ivy, who might struggle with her newfound connection to Gregor and his dark dealings, especially as she comes to terms with her role in the village’s fate.

Connections:

Tamsin Holloway: Idolizes her older cousin and follows her into trouble.

Gregor Vane: Secretly ensures her family’s welfare out of guilt.(true father)

  • Public Allegiance: Loyal to her family, avoids conflicts.

Location 3, Holloway townhouse

Samuel Holloway

Role: Younger brother of Jasper Holloway, a skilled hunter and trapper who vanished in the forest under mysterious circumstances. He was charismatic, adventurous, and free-spirited, often straying further into the woods than was wise.

Personality: Samuel was known for being bold yet kind-hearted, a man who thrived in the wilderness but was also charming and warm among villagers. Unlike his pragmatic and duty-bound brother, Samuel had a reckless streak and was drawn to danger, which may have played a role in his disappearance.

Disappearance: Samuel went missing over a year ago while on a solo hunting trip. Some believe he fell prey to wolves or something darker in the woods. Others whisper that he may have uncovered a secret he was not meant to see.

Samuel’s Place in the Village’s Memory

Samuel Holloway is spoken of in hushed tones, a tragic figure lost to the darkening forest. Some villagers mourn him, others fear what might have taken him, and a few question if he ever truly died at all.

Miriam Holloway (Samuel’s Widow)

Samuel's young widow, left to raise their infant son alone. She was once full of warmth and optimism, but since Samuel’s disappearance, she has become withdrawn, quiet, and deeply superstitious.

Personality: Wary, resilient, and deeply grieving, Miriam struggles to accept her husband’s fate. She clings to superstitions and warnings about the forest, now fearful of what lurks beyond the village. She is grateful to Jasper for supporting her, but their relationship is strained due to his anger and self-destructive tendencies.

Relationship to Jasper:

  • Jasper helps provide for Miriam and her child, though his guilt and grief often surface as anger.
  • Miriam resents Jasper’s drinking and temper, but she also knows he is suffering from the loss as well.
  • There is an unspoken tension between them, as Jasper secretly believes Samuel may still be alive, while Miriam believes he is lost forever.

Samuel & Elara Finch’s Affair

Nature of the Affair:

  • A secret, passionate romance, driven by Elara’s grief and Samuel’s recklessness.
  • Neither truly expected it to last, but there was a deep connection between them.

Complications & Aftermath:

  • Some whisper that Samuel’s disappearance is tied to Elara, though there is no proof.
  • Elara still wonders if he was taken, betrayed, or lost to something unnatural.
  • Miriam does not know about the affair, but if she ever found out, it would create immense conflict.

The Vane Family

Location: Vane Manor (North of the village, overlooking the river)

The Vane family is seen as wealthy, old-blooded, and powerful, their name woven into the very fabric of Ravenshollow’s history. They have owned land, influenced trade, and shaped village affairs for generations, and while they are not outright feared, there is an undeniable weight to their presence. The Vanes carry themselves with an air of entitlement, and though they present themselves as benefactors of the village, few truly believe their generosity comes without a price.

Most villagers regard them with a mix of respect and quiet wariness. Gregor Vane is known as a shrewd and calculating man, one whose coin can open doors or close them just as easily. Many rely on his trade connections, but there are whispered accusations that he has ruined competing merchants and caravan traders, ensuring Vane interests always come first. Of course, no one would dare say such things too loudly—business with the Vanes is profitable, but crossing them is costly.

Darker whispers follow Darin Vane, though they are never spoken outright. He is said to take pleasure in cruelty, that servants avoid his gaze, and that when bandits raid competing caravans, the attackers seem suspiciously well-equipped. Still, these are just rumors, and no one dares to confront a family as influential as the Vanes without proof.

While most villagers do not fear the Vanes in their day-to-day lives, they know better than to stand in their way. In Ravenshollow, power does not need to be violent to be dangerous—and the Vanes have held power for a very, very long time.

Gregor Vane

Side: Those Who Embrace Darkness

– The Wealthy Merchant (40s)

Gregor Vane is a wealthy and influential figure in Ravenshollow, using wealth, power, and fear to tighten his grip on the village. He sees himself as above the common folk, believing in Old Blood and legacy, and will do whatever it takes to maintain control. Though outwardly charming and generous, he is ruthless beneath the surface, orchestrating schemes to weaken his rivals while appearing as the village’s great benefactor.

Allies, Associates, and Useful Tools:
  • Roslyn Vane (Wife & Schemer in Her Own Right)A valuable partner but also a source of tension. He suspects she is plotting behind his back, but for now, they play their roles as Ravenshollow’s elite power couple.
  • Darin Vane (Son & Heir, Growing Uncontrollable) – He sees promise in his son but is growing wary of his violent and unpredictable nature. Darin is not as careful as he should be, and Gregor fears losing control over him.
  • Captain Roarke (Leader of the Black Talon Mercenaries) – A hired sword, paid well to keep order in the village when needed. Gregor trusts Roarke’s greed more than his loyalty, knowing that coin keeps him obedient—for now.
  • Father Lucian Reyne (Cleric, Growing More Fanatical) – Finds Lucian useful but concerning. While Gregor appreciates his influence over the villagers, Lucian’s zealotry is becoming erratic. He watches him carefully, unsure if the priest can still be controlled.
  • Mathis Gravel, employee, spy and saboutuer

Cautious but Cordial (For Now):
  • Edwin Holloway (Innkeeper, Observant & Too Neutral) – Gregor respects Edwin’s influence but resents his neutrality. He has subtly tried to pull him into his fold, but Edwin refuses to be bought. This irks Gregor, though he plays friendly for now.
  • Ronan Thatcher (Blacksmith & Village Leader) – A thorn in his side, but too respected to remove outright. Gregor sees Ronan as a fool clinging to old ideals, but he knows that many villagers follow his lead, making him an obstacle he must weaken carefully.
  • Mira Ashford (Herbalist & Keeper of the Old Ways)Does not trust her but does not see her as a threat—yet. He avoids her remedies and watches her warily, sensing she knows more than she lets on.

Unaware but Directly Affected:
  • Ivy Holloway (His Illegitimate Daughter, Unbeknownst to Him) – He does not know that Ivy is his own blood, the result of an affair with Jasper Holloway’s late wife. She is a loose thread, and if the truth comes to light, it could unravel much of his control.
  • Harlan Dovell (Village Guard, Uncertain Allegiance) – Gregor watches Harlan carefully. Though Harlan has not openly opposed him, he is loyal to the village first, making him potentially dangerous if pushed too far.

Mistrust & Quiet Opposition:
  • Old Man Cedric (Village Elder & Keeper of Ancient Knowledge) – A relic of the past that Gregor would rather be rid of, but Cedric holds too much wisdom for him to act against openly. He suspects Cedric knows things about his family’s past that he does not want uncovered.
  • Fiona Stonewell (Farmer’s Wife & Sharp Observer)Dislikes her meddling. She has spoken against him before, and while she lacks direct power, she has too much influence among the farmers for Gregor’s liking.
  • Jonas Fenrow (Superstitious Farmer & Easily Manipulated)Finds him useful but thinks he’s a fool. Gregor has subtly encouraged Jonas’ fears when it suits his needs, but he would dispose of him quickly if he became a liability.

Gregor’s Place in the Village:

Gregor Vane is Ravenshollow’s most powerful man, but he is not as untouchable as he once believed. The village is shifting, and his control is slipping. His alliances are fragile, and if the wrong secrets come to light, even his wealth and influence may not be enough to keep him in power.

Role: A prosperous merchant with trade connections far beyond the village, Gregor was once one of the village’s most respected men. However, as the darkness crept in, Gregor saw opportunity. He secretly allied himself with Isolde, believing that her growing power could be used for personal gain.

Personality: Gregor is cunning, ambitious, and manipulative. He presents himself as a helpful, concerned villager, but behind the scenes, he is a man who will do anything to secure his own wealth and status. He sees the chaos as a chance to amass power by aligning with Isolde.

Beliefs: Gregor believes that Isolde’s power is inevitable, and rather than resist it, he wants to profit from it. He has secretly begun trading in dark artifacts and forbidden knowledge, believing that when the village falls, he will be poised to rule whatever remains.

Secret: Gregor has been using dark magic to sabotage rival merchants. In secret, Gregor has been dabbling in forbidden magic, provided by Isolde, to curse and destroy his business rivals in nearby villages. Strange accidents and mysterious illnesses have befallen those who have tried to outmaneuver him in trade, and his recent prosperity is built on these underhanded methods.

Implication: If Gregor’s use of dark magic were exposed, it would ruin his standing not only in the village but also in surrounding trade communities. His relationship with Isolde would also become public knowledge, further isolating him and possibly turning other villagers against him.

  • True Allegiance: Aligned with Isolde and the dark entity, seeking forbidden power.
  • Public Allegiance: Presents himself as a protector of the village.

Roslyn Vane

Cunning and ambitious wife of Gregor.

Side: Those Who Embrace Darkness

– Gregor Vane’s Wife (Late 30s)

Role: Roslyn is Gregor Vane’s calculating wife and shares his ambitions, though she keeps a lower profile. She has a keen mind for politics and trade, and while she doesn't openly practice magic, she encourages Gregor's dealings with Isolde.

Personality: Cold, ambitious, and sharp, Roslyn is just as manipulative as her husband, though more discreet. She carefully watches village affairs and subtly influences others, always seeking to gain advantage for herself and her family. Ecourages her son Darin to follow in his fathers footsteps, more as a backup plan for herself.

Secret: Calculating and ambitious, silently supports Gregor’s dark dealings.

Connection: Roslyn is Gregor’s silent partner, offering advice on how to exploit the chaos. She encourages him to deepen his alliance with Isolde, seeing her as a means to secure the Vane family’s future dominance in the village.

Roslyn Vane is charming, cunning, and calculating, playing the role of a gracious noblewoman while carefully maneuvering to secure her family’s power. She watches Ravenshollow’s people with measured interest, knowing that influence is built on whispers and well-placed favors.

Allies, Associates, and Useful Tools:

  • Gregor Vane (Husband & Power Partner) – Their marriage is built on mutual ambition, not love. She supports his control over the village, but she distrusts his judgment, suspecting that his health is failing and his grip on power slipping.
  • Darin Vane (Son & Dangerous Heir) – Her greatest pride and deepest concern. She sees his cruelty and recklessness but believes she can keep him in check and shape him into a proper leader. In truth, she underestimates the darkness growing within him.
  • Iona Briar (Seamstress & Silent Confidant) – Roslyn enjoys Iona’s work and quiet cunning. There is an unspoken understanding between them, and while Roslyn does not fully believe in the superstitions of magic, she suspects that Iona’s influence runs deeper than mere craft.
  • Father Lucian Reyne (Cleric, More Useful Than Trusted) – She appreciates his influence over the villagers but finds his growing zeal unsettling. If his fanaticism turns against her family, she will not hesitate to remove him—one way or another.

Cautious but Cordial (For Now):
  • Edwin Holloway (Innkeeper & Well-Kept Neutrality) – She enjoys playing the role of a gracious guest, though she knows Edwin keeps his distance from village politics. She watches him for signs of wavering neutrality, knowing that a well-placed whisper could push him where she wants him.
  • Fiona Stonewell (Observant & Worrisome) – She dislikes Fiona’s watchful eyes and quiet influence over the farmers. Though Fiona lacks power, she has the ear of too many villagers and pushes against the Vanes’ influence in subtle ways.
  • Mira Ashford (Herbalist & Keeper of Old Knowledge) – Roslyn does not believe in village superstitions, but she finds Mira’s calm certainty unnerving. She never seeks her remedies and watches her warily, though she has yet to decide if she is a threat.
  • Ronan Thatcher (Blacksmith & Opposition Figure) – A stubborn man who refuses to bend. Roslyn considers him a fool clinging to outdated ideals but knows he is too respected to move against directly. Instead, she works to weaken his influence, bit by bit.

Mistrust & Potential Enemies:
  • Old Man Cedric (Keeper of Old Secrets) – She does not trust him and suspects he knows too much about the Vanes’ past. He is not a direct threat, but if his knowledge were ever used against them, she would not hesitate to silence him.
  • Harlan Dovell (Village Guard, Loyalty in Question) – While he has not opposed the Vanes outright, Roslyn suspects his loyalty lies with the village, not power. She keeps a careful eye on him, wary of where he may choose to stand when the time comes.

Roslyn’s Place in the Village:

Roslyn Vane is not feared outright, but she is always watching. She works in the shadows, shaping the village’s future with carefully chosen words, favors, and quiet threats. Unlike Gregor, she sees the cracks forming in their power and knows that to hold Ravenshollow, she must be ready to adapt—or to cut away whatever weakens them.

  • True Allegiance: Supports Gregor’s dark dealings but has her own secret plans.
  • Public Allegiance: Appears as a charming, supportive wife.

Darin Vane

Side: Those Who Embrace Darkness

– The Spoiled Son (19)

Darin Vane is arrogant, cruel, and dangerously untouchable, indulging in his whims under the protection of his family’s wealth and power. Most villagers avoid drawing his attention, knowing that his temper is quick and his grudges long. While he presents himself as a confident and charming nobleman, those who know him better fear the sadistic streak lurking beneath his polished exterior.

Allies, Associates, and Useful Tools:
  • Gregor Vane (Father & Disapproving Mentor) – Darin both admires and resents his father. He craves Gregor’s approval, yet resents being controlled. He is impatient to take what he sees as rightfully his, but Gregor still holds the reins—for now.
  • Roslyn Vane (Mother & Manipulative Guide) – Darin trusts his mother more than his father, though he knows she is trying to mold him into something he does not wish to be. He listens to her when it suits him, but one day, he plans to stop listening entirely.
  • Captain Roarke (Black Talon Mercenary Leader) – Darin idolizes Roarke’s ruthlessness and sees the mercenary as a glimpse of the power he wants for himself. He enjoys watching the Black Talons work, learning how force and fear shape the world.
  • Mathis Gravel - a tool his father uses but every now and then Darin has him assist in some endevour

Cautious but Cordial (For Now):
  • Father Lucian Reyne (Cleric, Unsettling but Interesting) – Darin finds the priest amusing. He is not particularly pious, but he enjoys the idea of divine justification for cruelty. He listens to Lucian’s righteous speeches with a mix of fascination and mockery.
  • Iona Briar (Seamstress & Enchantress of Influence) – He is intrigued by her in a way he does not fully understand. He suspects she has her own secrets, but he enjoys being near her nonetheless. Whether it’s admiration or the pull of something unnatural, he has yet to decide.
  • Edwin Holloway (Innkeeper, Amusingly Neutral) – Darin mocks Edwin’s neutrality, seeing it as cowardice. He enjoys taunting him, knowing the innkeeper cannot afford to offend the Vanes.
  • Tamsin Holloway (Curious & Reckless) – Darin finds Tamsin’s rebellious streak entertaining, though he sees her as little more than a foolish girl. He has not yet taken an interest in her, but if he ever did, it would not be for anything good.

Mistrust & Unspoken Rivalry:
  • Ronan Thatcher (Blacksmith & Opposition Figure)Despises him openly. Ronan does not bow to the Vanes, and Darin loathes his defiance. He has tried to push Ronan into fights, but the blacksmith is too controlled to take the bait—which only angers Darin more.
  • Harlan Dovell (Village Guard & A Potential Problem) – Harlan does his duty but does not fear him, which Darin finds irritating. He senses that Harlan would not hesitate to act if given cause, and that makes him dangerous.
  • Mira Ashford (Herbalist & Keeper of Forbidden Knowledge) – He does not trust her and avoids her remedies, viewing her as a relic of things better left forgotten.

Darin’s Place in the Village:

Darin is feared in whispers but never openly challenged. He is a storm waiting to break, barely restrained by the expectations of his family. Those who cross him suffer, and those who ignore him may not get the chance to do so forever. One day, the thin mask of nobility will slip—and when it does, no one will be safe.

Role: Darin is the only son of Gregor and Roslyn Vane. Unlike his parents, he is reckless and arrogant, often flaunting his family's wealth and growing influence. Darin has recently become entangled with Isolde’s dark magic, drawn to the idea of gaining power for himself.

Personality: Impulsive, entitled, and prone to bullying, Darin cares little for the village’s plight. He views the darkness as a chance to assert his dominance over the other villagers and enjoys causing trouble.

Connection: Darin idolizes Isolde and has started dabbling in dark magic under her tutelage. He runs errands for her in secret, helping spread fear and chaos in the village by encouraging others to give in to their darker impulses.

Secret: Darin caused the death of his childhood friend in a magical accident. As a teenager, Darin found a forbidden magical artifact hidden by his father, Gregor. He used it to impress a group of friends, but the power surged out of control, killing one of them. Darin covered it up, with his father’s help, but has been haunted by it ever since. His recklessness in magic now comes from trying to prove to himself that he can control it.

Implication: If this dark past were uncovered, it would expose Darin as a reckless murderer, and his friends and allies would abandon him. It would also provide a powerful moral conflict, as he struggles with guilt and tries to avoid repeating his past mistakes, even as he delves deeper into dangerous magic.

Rebellious and reckless son.

  • True Allegiance: Devoted to Isolde, seeks her approval and power.
  • Public Allegiance: Acts as a dutiful son helping his father’s business.
  • Connections:
  • Milo Carroway (partner in exploring forbidden areas)
  • Tamsin Holloway (flirtatious relationship, tries to impress her)

FaelanThe Faelan Family

Location: Faelan Homestead (Secluded, near the forest edge)

The Faelans are a quiet family who moved to Ravenshollow seeking a fresh start, but they soon found themselves drawn into a darkness that has plagued their lives ever since. Despite their warm nature and hard work, the family remains guarded, hiding the terrible truth about their daughter Liora’s curse. The curse is linked to a mysterious incident in the forest that occurred shortly after they arrived, binding Liora to a force within the Gloomwood.

Their attempts to control her transformations have been unsuccessful, and while they try to convince themselves that the deaths in the village were caused by real wolves, the Faelans know deep down that Liora may be responsible. The family lives in constant fear and guilt, doing everything they can to keep her curse hidden.

Eoin Faelan

Description: Eoin is a tall, stoic man in his early 40s with deep-set eyes that seem to hold both sorrow and a fierce protectiveness for his family. Known for his skills as a woodworker, he keeps himself busy around the village, often helping with repairs.

Personality: Eoin is haunted by guilt over Liora’s curse, feeling that he somehow failed to protect her. He is determined to find a solution, though his pragmatic nature often leads him to deny the full extent of the curse’s impact—even to himself. The deaths of villagers are a burden he carries heavily, though he rationalizes them as accidents.

The head of the family, a skilled woodworker burdened by his daughter’s curse.

Rhea Faelan

Description: Rhea is a gentle woman in her late 30s with dark hair streaked with silver and soft, sad eyes. She works with Mira Ashford, the herbalist, and has learned much about herbs and folk remedies, though none have managed to lift Liora’s curse.

Personality: Rhea is loving and compassionate, fiercely protective of Liora. She is more accepting of the curse’s severity than Eoin, harboring a quiet but growing terror over the idea that her daughter may be losing herself to the dark forces within the forest. She often sneaks into the forest to leave offerings, hoping to appease whatever has bound itself to Liora.

Reclusive and fearful wife of Eoin, protective of her family.

Personality: Aidan is deeply loyal to Liora, though the weight of secrecy has made him guarded. He frequently sits watch outside the cellar during full moons and has become an expert at hiding signs of Liora’s transformations. The eldest son, fiercely protective of his sister Liora.

Personality: Liora has started to experience gaps in her memory, particularly on nights when she transforms. Though she tries to ignore these lapses, her nightmares are filled with frightening images of running through the forest and the scent of blood. She has no memory of the transformations and is unaware that she might be responsible for the recent deaths. Her only comfort is her friendship with Tamsin, though she fears that Tamsin might notice her strange behavior.

Youngest daughter, cursed with uncontrollable werewolf transformations.

He is known for his steady leadership, prioritizing the survival of his family and the village over old traditions or fading superstitions. Trusted Friends & Allies:
  • Ronan Thatcher (Blacksmith & Fellow Village Leader) – A strong ally and trusted friend. • Mira Ashford (Herbalist & Cautious Ally) – Gareth does not fully trust the Old Ways, but he respects Mira’s knowledge and accepts her remedies when needed. So long as she remains a healer and not something more, he sees no reason to turn against her.

Cautious but Cordial (For Now):

  • Jonas Fenrow (Superstitious Farmer & Spreader of Fear) – Thinks Jonas is a fool, always chasing ghosts instead of solving real problems. He ignores his wild warnings but worries that fearful men make dangerous choices.

Gareth’s Place in the Village:

Gareth is a respected farmer and leader, a man who believes in hard work, preparation, and unity. While he does not seek fights, he will stand against those who threaten the village’s survival—whether that means holding the farmers together against Imperial taxes, resisting Gregor Vane’s control, or refusing to let fear dictate their future. However, as the shadows over Ravenshollow deepen, Gareth may soon find that practical solutions are not enough to stop what is coming.

Role: A hard-working farmer, Gareth has always been practical, keeping to his own affairs and focusing on the land. However, as the crops began to wither, he became one of Ronan Thatcher’s staunchest supporters.

Personality: Quiet, reliable, and strong, Gareth is the type of man who prefers actions to words. Though not particularly superstitious, he’s deeply concerned about the village's survival and is ready to act, seeing Ronan’s call for action as the only real solution.

She is worried about their future and is beginning to suspect that something unnatural is causing the farm’s recent troubles.

Fiona Stonewell is sharp-eyed, pragmatic, and fiercely protective of her family and the village. Mistrust & Growing Concern:
  • Darin Vane (Spoiled & Dangerous Heir)Finds him deeply unsettling. She has heard whispers of his cruelty and has no doubt that he enjoys harming others. If he ever set his sights on her family, she would not hesitate to act first.
  • Jonas Fenrow (Fearmonger & Paranoid Farmer) – While she believes some fears are worth listening to, Jonas is too quick to spread panic. She worries that his paranoia could turn dangerous if left unchecked.

Fiona is a watcher, a quiet protector, someone who sees the hidden currents of Ravenshollow and prepares for what others ignore. While Gareth leads through hard work and stability, she ensures their family and allies do not fall prey to unseen threats. The Wren family of Wrenwood Farm is seen as honest, hardworking, and fair, with Aidan Wren being respected among farmers and traders for his level-headed approach to village matters. The family keeps to themselves, avoiding conflicts but quietly supporting those they trust.

Though Mara Wren’s curiosity about the old stories makes some villagers uneasy, she is careful to keep her interest private. Rowan Wren’s adventurous streak often worries his parents, as he is known to wander too close to the forest, sometimes alongside Lina Ashford, which has raised some hushed concerns.

The Wrens are not openly aligned with any faction, preferring to focus on their land and survival, but many believe that if tensions in the village boil over, the family will side with those they see as the most practical and protective—most likely Ronan Thatcher and Gareth Stonewell.

Aidan Wren:

Head of Wrenwood Farm, diligent and fair, husband to Catherine.

A hardworking farmer who has lived his whole life on the land. Aidan is deeply connected to the orchard, but lately, he’s begun noticing strange changes in the trees—some bear fruit out of season, while others rot without reason. He’s desperate to save the farm but unsure how to proceed.

The Fenrow Family

The Fenrow family of Fenrow Farm was once seen as practical and level-headed, with Jonas Fenrow being a man of reason who dismissed superstition in favor of hard work and logic. However, strange occurrences near the boglands have changed him. He has seen too much, and now he searches for explanations in whispers and fear.

The Fenrows are still respected, but now they are also watched carefully, as villagers whisper about what Jonas has seen—and what he might do next.

Jonas Fenrow:

The head of the Fenrow family, used to be stern but fair, now easily influenced and quick to lay blame at others feet.

Though he still tries to maintain control, many in Ravenshollow notice his growing paranoia. He has begun listening to Father Lucian and others, willing to accept any answer, even if it means blaming the innocent. His wife, Martha, and their farmhands do their best to keep the farm running, but there is an undercurrent of tension, as if waiting for something unseen to strike again.

The Briar Family

The Briar family is divided between Briarpatch Farm, where the hardworking, grounded branch of the family resides, and The Briar Needle, the seamstress shop in the village, run by the ambitious and secretive sisters.

History: George Briar had 3 daughters. Oldest Iona was with his first wife but she died in the birthing bed. When he remarried to Lidia he had another two daughters, Lilly and Madeline. Iona was always envious of them, getting the attention and having a live loving mother. She often created mischief and trouble and tried blaming Lilly for it. George seldomly believed her, listening to his new wife. Iona and Madeline did create a bond. When the new wife eventually managed to convince George of Ionas bad influence, he kicked them of the farm. They moved to the village itself and eventually opened a weavers and seamstress shop.

Location 1: The Briar Needle (Seamstress Shop in Town)

A respected but quietly unsettling shop, The Briar Needle is known for its fine craftsmanship, intricate embroidery, and high-quality garments. However, some whisper that there is more to Iona Briar’s weaving than simple thread and cloth.

Iona Briar:

Skilled but envious seamstress, ambitious and manipulative.

Iona Briar is the village's seamstress, known for her exceptional craftsmanship despite her and keen eye for detail. Beneath her professional demeanor, she harbors ambitions and has secretly forged a pact with Isolde, using dark magic in her weavings to subtly influence the villagers.

Role: A village seamstress who has long been envious of others’ success and beauty, Iona has fallen under Isolde’s influence. Drawn to Isolde’s promises of power and beauty, Iona has begun using dark magic to manipulate her neighbors, turning them against one another for her own amusement.

Personality: Iona is vain, bitter, and opportunistic. She harbors deep resentment toward those she perceives as more fortunate or attractive than herself. Now, with Isolde’s influence, she has the means to exact petty revenges, and she delights in the growing chaos.

Beliefs: Iona believes that the village is destined to fall and sees no point in trying to save it. Instead, she has fully embraced Isolde’s dark magic, using it to elevate her own position in the village. She revels in the fact that she can finally make those she envied suffer.

Secret: Iona made a pact with Isolde to trade her loyalty for beauty and power. Iona’s obsession with beauty comes from an old fear of losing her looks. Years ago, she approached Isolde for help and struck a deal: in exchange for her loyalty and assistance in spreading darkness, Isolde would help Iona maintain her youth and beauty. However, the magic has begun to twist her inwardly, corrupting her soul.

Iona being envious of her younger sister Lily, started all kinds of mischief and blamed it on Lily. Her father never belived her however Madeline did. Eventually her Father threw her out and Iona and Madeline moved into the village itself.

Implication: If Iona’s vanity and her pact with Isolde were revealed, the village would see her as a traitor, and her obsession with beauty could become her downfall. As Isolde’s magic continues to take its toll, Iona might begin to deteriorate physically despite her efforts, revealing her true ugliness both inside and out.

Personality: Harlan is stoic and honorable, with a strong sense of duty, though he is increasingly weighed down by doubt. He is a good man, but the stress of keeping the village safe as it descends into chaos is beginning to take its toll on him. He fears for the future and is unsure of who to trust.

Beliefs: Harlan believes in protecting the village above all, but he is caught between two worlds. He knows that Isolde is dangerous, but he also feels the witches, particularly Agatha, may be the village’s best hope. However, with the growing unrest, Harlan is torn between following the will of the villagers and seeking help from the witches.

These characters represent the many faces of the village's internal struggle—some seeking to preserve their way of life and restore balance, others turning toward darkness and selfishness, and some caught in the confusion of a world unraveling at the seams.

Secret: Harlan once served as a soldier for a tyrant who used dark magic. Before returning to the village, Harlan was part of a mercenary group hired by a cruel lord who used dark sorcery to maintain his power. Though Harlan left that life behind, he fears that his past experiences with dark magic make him vulnerable to the growing evil in the forest. He hides his knowledge of dark magic from the other villagers, ashamed of what he once did in service of a corrupt lord.

Implication: If this secret were exposed, Harlan’s reputation as a protector could be shattered, and his ability to lead the militia compromised. She believes that Isolde is responsible for her husband’s death and has started rallying others to demand action against the witches.

Personality:
Elara is deeply emotional, her grief fueling her anger. She is fiery and determined, often acting impulsively out of pain and fear. Though once a strong believer in the witches' protection, she now sees them as betrayers. She is intelligent, but reckless, using her charisma to sway others to her side, even if she doesn't always consider the consequences.

She genuinely believes that the witches, or at least Isolde, have betrayed the village and are responsible for the growing darkness. She is pushing the village toward open rebellion, refusing to let the fear that grips others paralyze her into inaction.

Trusted Allies & Followers:
  • Father Lucian Reyne (Priest & Spiritual Guide) – One of Elara’s strongest allies, Lucian has used her grief and anger to fuel his own crusade against the witches. She sees his certainty as comforting, and while she does not share his full zealotry, she trusts his vision for the village’s future.

Her Greatest Secret – The Affair with Samuel Holloway

Though Elara publicly mourns her husband, she secretly had an affair with Samuel Holloway, a man who recently disappeared into the forest. She now fears that Isolde discovered her infidelity and took revenge on Samuel, though she still outwardly blames the witches for both deaths.

Complications & Aftermath:

  • Some whisper that Samuel’s disappearance is tied to Elara, though there is no proof.
  • Miriam Holloway (Samuel’s Widow) does not know about the affair, but if she ever found out, it would create immense conflict.
  • If this secret was revealed, it would undermine Elara’s authority, making her seem self-serving and manipulative rather than a grieving widow leading the charge.

Home – The Finch Cottage

Elara lives alone in a hunter’s cottage on the edge of the village, near the forest.

  • A small archery range sits to the side, where she practices regularly.
  • A game-drying rack hangs near the back, showing that she still hunts to provide for herself.
  • A chicken coop with two dozen hens ensures she never fully goes hungry, but she is still used to the hunt.
  • The house itself is modest but well-kept, though inside, it is filled with small superstitious charms against evil.

Elara’s Place in the Village:

Elara is loud, angry, and unyielding, making her both a force to be reckoned with and a dangerous figure in the growing tensions. Some see her as a necessary voice, a warrior against complacency, while others whisper that she may one day lead the village into something it cannot take back.

Role: A young widow whose husband died after a hunting trip into the forest, Elara has become one of the most vocal advocates for confronting the witches. She believes that Isolde is responsible for her husband’s death and has started rallying others to demand answers from the witches.

Personality: Elara is deeply emotional, her grief fueling her anger. She is fiery and determined, often acting impulsively out of pain and fear. She genuinely believes that the witches, or at least one of them, have betrayed the village, and she is pushing the village toward rebellion.

Beliefs: Though initially a devout believer in the witches' protection, Elara has lost all faith in them. She blames Isolde for the chaos in the forest and is determined to confront the witches, regardless of the consequences.

Secret: Elara had an affair with a villager who recently went missing. While she publicly mourns her husband’s death and blames the witches, she secretly had an affair with Samuel Holloway, the farmer. When Samuel recently disappeared on a hunting trip, Elara fears that Isolde discovered her infidelity and took revenge, though she still outwardly blames the witches for her husband’s death.

Implication: If this secret were revealed, it would undermine her position as a grieving widow and sow distrust among the villagers, especially Miriam Holloway, Samuels’s wife. It could also force Elara to confront her own guilt and complicate her campaign against the witches.

Black Talon Company

The Black Talon Company is a mercenary guild based far outside Ravenshollow. They are led by Captain Roarke, a charismatic yet dangerous figure with a reputation for brutal efficiency. Roarke’s leadership style is pragmatic, valuing profit above honor, and his men follow him out of a mix of fear and respect. The company’s insignia—a black talon clutching a coin—reflects their philosophy: wealth and power are all that matter, and they will claw their way to both by any means necessary.

Captain Roarke - The Ruthless Mastermind of the Black Talon Company

Overview

Captain Roarke is the leader of the Black Talon Company, a mercenary group of ill repute that operates under the guise of offering "protection" to the village of Ravenshollow. In truth, he orchestrates ambushes and raids on merchant caravans that refuse to pay for Black Talon escort services, ensuring that only Gregor Vane’s approved trade partners make it through unscathed. He operates from a hidden encampment deep in the forest, a well-supplied and defensible base where he coordinates his schemes.

Appearance & Personality
  • Age: Late 40s
  • Build: Broad-shouldered, lean, with the hardened physique of a lifelong warrior.
  • Face: Weathered with deep scars, a crooked nose, and dark, piercing eyes that assess every conversation as a potential advantage.
  • Demeanor: Cold, calculating, and pragmatic. Roarke rarely raises his voice, speaking with deliberate precision that makes even casual words feel like threats.
  • Clothing & Armor: Wears practical, reinforced leather with dark accents. His armor bears faded heraldry from a distant, long-forgotten war. A black-feathered talon brooch marks him as leader.

Personality & Motivations

Captain Roarke is a man of strict discipline and calculated ambition. He views the world through the lens of power and control, believing that only the strong deserve to lead. Though he officially serves Gregor Vane, Roarke is no mindless thug—he recognizes Vane’s weakness and the unraveling of the noble’s grip on the village. He sees an opportunity to turn the Black Talon Company into more than just hired enforcers.

His ultimate goal?
To seize true power in Ravenshollow. If Gregor falters, Roarke is prepared to step in and become the true master of the region—either through quiet manipulation or outright force.

Roarke’s Hidden Campsite
  • Located in a secluded ravine within some hills, two days east of Ravenshollow.
  • Tents and makeshift wooden structures provide shelter for the Black Talon mercenaries.

  • Handles the day-to-day operations of the Black Talon and liaises with Gregor Vane.

Gregor Vane (Employer, but a Dying Man)
  • Roarke resents working under Gregor and sees him as weak.
  • He plays along for now, benefiting from Vane’s money and political maneuvering.
  • If Gregor’s illness worsens or Darin Vane proves too reckless, Roarke may betray the Vanes and carve out his own kingdom.
Darin Vane (A Dangerous Wild Card)
  • Roarke sees potential in Darin’s newfound strength, but also fears his unpredictability.
  • He tests Darin’s loyalty by involving him in ambushes and violent tasks.
  • If Darin loses control or threatens Black Talon’s stability, Roarke will not hesitate to eliminate him.

Mathis Gravel (Occasional Informant)
  • Mathis provides Roarke with information on village gossip, rival merchants, and easy targets.
  • The relationship is purely transactional—if Mathis betrays Roarke, he will be eliminated.

Roarke’s Key Strategies and Schemes
  1. Merchant Ambushes
  2. Only caravans that refuse to hire Black Talon mercenaries are attacked, reinforcing the illusion that Gregor Vane’s "protection" is necessary.
  3. Attackers leave few survivors, ensuring that fear spreads without concrete proof of their involvement.
  4. Captured merchants are either ransomed or disposed of—no loose ends.
  5. Instability in Ravenshollow
  6. Roarke quietly encourages conflict between factions within the village.
  7. He feeds Father Lucian’s paranoia, hoping to stir religious unrest.
  8. He subtly undermines Ronan Thatcher, as the blacksmith is one of the few who openly defies Black Talon’s control.
  9. Readiness to Seize Power
  10. Roarke monitors Gregor Vane’s health closely. If Gregor weakens further, Roarke may turn the Black Talon against the Vanes.
  11. He has contingency plans to install a puppet leader in Ravenshollow, possibly a fearful villager under his thumb.

Potential Player Interactions
1. Discovering the Campsite
  • Players might track missing caravans or stumble upon Black Talon ambush survivors who lead them to Roarke’s hidden base.
  • The camp is heavily guarded, requiring careful planning, stealth, or deception to infiltrate.
2. Negotiating with Roarke
  • If the players have something valuable (trade influence, blackmail, or magical power), Roarke may consider negotiations.
  • He does not fear threats and only respects tactical brilliance or undeniable power.
3. Challenging Black Talon’s Rule
  • Players can expose Black Talon’s corruption, forcing the village to resist.
  • Direct combat is risky—Roarke and his elite mercenaries fight with precision and brutality.
4. Roarke’s Betrayal of the Vanes
  • If Gregor Vane’s health collapses or Darin becomes too unstable, Roarke will move against them.
  • Players could intercept Roarke’s plans, turn Gregor against him, or force an all-out battle between Black Talon and the Vanes.

Final Thoughts

Captain Roarke is a ruthless, methodical warlord masquerading as a mere mercenary leader. He is patient, calculating every move, and biding his time until the moment to claim Ravenshollow for himself.

Would you like me to expand on any of his strategies, combat tactics, or hidden weaknesses?

Lieutenant Merrick – The Watchful Enforcer of Ravenshollow

Overview

Lieutenant Merrick is Captain Roarke’s second-in-command, a seasoned soldier and tactician who operates within Ravenshollow itself, commanding a small detachment of Black Talon mercenaries. Officially, his role is to act as Gregor Vane’s personal town guard, justifying their presence by claiming that the village militia and volunteer guards are too weak to maintain order. In reality, his presence serves two purposes—to enforce Vane’s control over the village and to root out any potential opposition before it grows into a true threat.

Appearance & Personality
  • Age: Mid-30s
  • Build: Lean but wiry, built for speed and precision rather than brute force.
  • Face: Sharp, angular features with a permanent air of disapproval. His cold, pale blue eyes rarely show emotion, and his short, dark hair is always neatly trimmed.
  • Demeanor: Calm, calculating, and unshakably professional. Merrick carries himself like a man who has already won a battle before it starts.
  • Clothing & Armor: Wears a darkened chain shirt beneath a black surcoat bearing a silver talon insignia. His sword is always kept polished and ready, its hilt wrapped in worn leather from years of use.

Personality & Motivations
  • A Pragmatic Strategist – Unlike Roarke, who dreams of seizing power, Merrick is content playing the long game. He values control over chaos and despises recklessness.
  • A Disdain for the Villagers – He views most of Ravenshollow as simple, frightened peasants, too weak to defend themselves. He believes Gregor Vane’s dominance is necessary for the village’s survival.
  • Loyal to Roarke, but with Limits – He respects Roarke’s leadership but secretly wonders if his commander’s ambitions will lead to their downfall. If Roarke's plans fail, Merrick is prepared to align himself with another power.
  • No Love for the Vanes – While he enforces Gregor Vane’s rule, he has no personal loyalty to the noble. If Gregor collapses or shows further weakness, Merrick may abandon him entirely.

Merrick’s Role in Ravenshollow
  • Commands six Black Talon mercenaries, all stationed in the village, acting as a private guard for the Vanes.
  • Regularly patrols the market square and key roads, ensuring that merchants and villagers remain "in line."
  • Handles Vane’s dirty work, including intimidation, collecting debts, and "discreet disappearances" when necessary.
  • Keeps close tabs on village leaders, particularly Ronan Thatcher, Old Man Cedric, and Mira Ashford, whom he views as possible threats to Gregor’s rule.

Key Relationships
Captain Roarke (Superior, but a Point of Doubt)
  • Roarke relies on Merrick to maintain order in the village while he oversees operations at the hidden camp.
  • Merrick agrees with Roarke’s tactics but suspects that his obsession with power will eventually be his downfall.
  • If Roarke were to fail, Merrick would be among the first to take control of what remains of the Black Talon.
Gregor Vane (Employer, but No True Loyalty)
  • Merrick keeps Gregor alive because it benefits him, not out of loyalty.
  • He sees Gregor’s weakening health as a liability, and he’s considering what happens when Vane can no longer lead.
  • If a better power arises, Merrick will not hesitate to switch sides.
Darin Vane (Potential Problem)
  • Merrick does not trust Darin—he sees him as unstable, reckless, and dangerous.
  • While he acknowledges Darin’s growing strength, he believes the young noble lacks the discipline to rule effectively.
  • If Darin becomes too much of a liability, Merrick will make plans to remove him.
Father Lucian Reyne (A Useful Tool)
  • Merrick has noticed the priest’s growing fanaticism but doesn’t fully understand the dark force behind it.
  • He lets Lucian spread his paranoia, as it makes the villagers easier to control.
  • If Lucian becomes too radical, Merrick may consider eliminating him.
Ronan Thatcher (Potential Opposition)
  • Merrick views Ronan as one of the few true warriors in the village and a potential obstacle.
  • If Ronan were to rally the villagers, Merrick knows it could lead to an uprising against the Vanes.
  • He keeps a close eye on Ronan, making sure to limit his influence where possible.
Old Man Cedric (An Annoyance)
  • Merrick does not believe in magic and dismisses Cedric’s knowledge of the witches as old folklore.
  • However, he recognizes that Cedric holds sway over some of the villagers and monitors his movements carefully.
Mira Ashford (Suspicious, but Not a Priority)
  • He knows Mira has ties to the witches, but he doesn’t see her as a direct threat.
  • He has instructed his men to watch her, ensuring she doesn’t gain too much influence over the villagers.

Merrick’s Methods and Control Over the Village
  1. Suppression of Dissent
  2. Anyone speaking against Gregor Vane or refusing to pay their “protection” dues is visited by Black Talon enforcers.
  3. Villagers who continue to resist tend to disappear under suspicious circumstances.
  4. "Justice" in the Marketplace
  5. Merrick and his men frequently interfere with trade disputes, favoring merchants aligned with the Vanes.
  6. He taxes independent traders heavily, ensuring that only Vane-approved caravans thrive.
  7. Recruiting Informants
  8. He recruits desperate villagers—those in debt, those seeking favors—as informants.
  9. They report suspicious activity, especially conversations about rebellion, dealings with witches, or resistance to the Vanes.
  10. Ruthless Efficiency
  11. Merrick avoids excessive cruelty—unlike Roarke, he does not enjoy torture or unnecessary violence.
  12. His approach is cold and precise—when he needs to send a message, he does it swiftly and without theatrics.

Potential Player Interactions
1. Confronting Merrick Directly
  • Players who oppose the Vanes will eventually face Merrick. He is a skilled fighter and tactician, unlikely to be caught off guard.
  • If forced into a direct confrontation, he will not fight to the death—if the situation turns against him, he will retreat and regroup.
2. Manipulating or Exposing Him
  • Players may attempt to turn Merrick against Roarke or the Vanes, though this will require clever manipulation.
  • If the players expose his secret disloyalty, they might force a power struggle between Merrick and Roarke.
3. Rallying the Village Against Him
  • If the players can unite Ronan Thatcher, Old Man Cedric, and other key figures, they may be able to oust Merrick and his mercenaries.
  • However, Merrick will not go down easily—he will likely set the village against itself before abandoning it.

Final Thoughts

Lieutenant Merrick is a calculating enforcer, a true threat within Ravenshollow who keeps Vane’s rule intact. He is less overtly violent than Roarke, but far more methodical, making him a dangerous foe—or a potential ally, if the right leverage is applied.

The Temple

Location: Central Ravenshollow

Father Lucian Reyne:

Side: Those Who Embrace Darkness

– The Priest (50s)

Role: Once a devout and respected spiritual leader of the village, Father Lucian has succumbed to his own fear and doubt. Secretly, he has begun to worship the dark entities Isolde has summoned, believing that they are the true powers in the world and that only by serving them can he protect the village.

Personality: Father Lucian is a man torn between faith and fear. He has always been stern, but as the darkness spread, his sermons became increasingly filled with apocalyptic warnings. His desperation to protect the village from what he sees as divine punishment has led him down a dark path.

Beliefs: Father Lucian believes that the village has been cursed and that only by appeasing the dark spirits can they survive. He has secretly started making offerings to these spirits, even sacrificing animals and whispering ancient prayers in the dead of night. He justifies these actions as necessary to save his flock, though deep down, he is terrified of what he has become.

Secret: Father Lucian fathered a child with a witch. Decades ago, before becoming a priest, Lucian had an illicit relationship with a mysterious woman in the forest who was connected to the witches. He later learned she was a distant relative of Agatha, Selene, and Isolde. The child was born and taken by the witches to be raised in secret, a fact that haunts Lucian, especially as the darkness grows.

Implication: If this secret were revealed, it would destroy Father Lucian’s authority and reputation in the village. It would also cast doubt on his motivations, as he might have deeper personal reasons for his interest in the witches beyond religious duty. If his child were to emerge, it could further complicate the conflict.

Father Lucian Reyne – The Fanatic Shepherd of Ravenshollow

Father Lucian Reyne was once a respected spiritual leader, a man of warmth and compassion who preached unity and faith. But the slow decay of the village—its fears, its growing distrust, the creeping corruption—has twisted his beliefs into something darker. He now sees himself as the village’s last hope, the only one who can lead Ravenshollow to salvation. However, his faith has become a tool of the Devourer’s whispers, and he mistakes his dark visions for divine guidance.

He fervently believes that the witches are responsible for the village’s suffering, and only through purity and sacrifice can Ravenshollow be saved. His influence over the fearful and desperate grows daily, turning the church from a place of peace into a bastion of paranoia and zealotry.

Allies, Associates, and Useful Tools

Gregor Vane (Wealthy Benefactor & Mutual Manipulator) – Lucian sees Gregor as a useful ally in maintaining order, though he does not trust him. Gregor funds the temple and supports his sermons, but Lucian senses his corruption and weakness. In private, Lucian considers whether Gregor is beyond redemption.

Elara Finch (A Mind Poisoned by Vengeance, Potential Convert) – A widow broken by loss, Lucian sees a kindred spirit in her pain and bitterness. He believes he can steer her anger toward the righteous path, making her a loyal follower in his coming crusade.

Jonas Fenrow (A Frightened Man, Easily Led) – Lucian preys on Jonas’ fears, fueling his superstitions about the witches and the forest. He sees Jonas as an unwitting pawn, someone who will gladly take drastic action if given the right push.

Iona Briar (A Presence That Feels… Wrong) – Though Lucian does not fully understand Iona’s nature, he senses something unnatural about her. He does not speak against her, but neither does he trust her. If he were to realize the true extent of her magic, he would see her as an abomination that must be purged.

Cautious but Cordial (For Now)

Lieutenant Merrick (A Useful Blade, But No Man of Faith) – Merrick’s presence helps maintain control, and Lucian values that. However, he is a man of steel, not faith, and that makes him unreliable in Lucian’s eyes. If Merrick’s goals ever contradict the church’s, Lucian will have no hesitation in condemning him as a faithless brute.

Darin Vane (A Soul at War with Itself) – Lucian sees Darin’s strength and fury and wonders if he can be molded into a holy warrior. But there is something wrong about him, something Lucian cannot quite name. He watches Darin closely, debating whether he is an agent of salvation… or a demon in waiting.

Milo Carroway (A Boy Drawn to Shadows) – Lucian has caught Milo watching him, lurking at the back of sermons with an expression he does not like. The boy is searching for something, and Lucian wonders if it is truth… or temptation that calls to him.

Mistrust & Quiet Opposition

Old Man Cedric (A Relic of False Teachings, A Whisperer of Lies) – Cedric’s knowledge of the old ways and the witches makes him dangerous. Lucian preaches against him, painting him as a deceiver, a man who would lead the village back into darkness. If Cedric gains too much influence, Lucian will turn the village against him.

Mira Ashford (A Witch in All But Name)Her herbs, her wisdom, her quiet defiance—Lucian sees all of it as proof of witchcraft and corruption. He warns against her in sermons, spreading whispers that she poisons the village with foul magic. He has not yet acted against her, but that day is coming.

Ronan Thatcher (A Fool Who Does Not Understand Righteousness) – Ronan is strong in body but weak in faith, too stubborn and too tied to his own pragmatism to see the truth. Lucian considers him an obstacle but one that can still be turned—if not, he will be removed like any other heathen.

Fiona Stonewell (A Dangerous Influence Among Women) – She is outspoken, sharp-eyed, and too skeptical of his sermons. Lucian has heard her correcting frightened villagers, easing their fears when he wants them afraid. This makes her an enemy in need of silencing.

Unaware but Directly Affected

Brother Lyle (A Young Man at a Crossroads) – Lyle is his loyal novice, but for how much longer? Lucian senses doubt growing in him, and doubt is a crack in the armor of faith. Lyle has seen too much, suspects too much, and Lucian wonders when the boy will break—one way or another.

Edwin Holloway (A Passive Obstacle, But One That Should Not Be Ignored) – Edwin runs the Hollow Hearth Inn and hears everything. Lucian dislikes his neutrality, seeing it as cowardice in the face of necessary action. If Edwin chooses the wrong side when the time comes, he will fall like the rest.

Ivy Holloway (A Girl Haunted by Ghosts, Real or Imagined) – Ivy has always been quiet, but Lucian notices the way she watches people, the way she lingers too long near the temple but never enters. He does not yet understand why, but he suspects she knows things she should not.

Lucian’s Place in the Village

To most villagers, Father Lucian Reyne is a pillar of faith, the last voice of order in an unraveling world. He speaks with conviction, and in uncertain times, people cling to conviction like drowning men to driftwood. Many fear the witches, and Lucian’s sermons give them a target to blame, an enemy to fight.

However, not everyone is blind to his transformation. Some whisper that the priest has changed, that his sermons have lost their warmth, that his eyes hold too much fire and too little light. Those who oppose him do so quietly, for fear of what he may do if challenged.

Lucian is a man on the edge, and the village watches to see if he will be their savior… or their damnation.

Brother Lyle:

A young novice assisting Father Lucian at the temple. Loyal on the surface but increasingly uneasy about Lucian’s erratic and dark actions.

Side: Caught in the middle

– The Novice Monk (Mid-20s)

Brother Lyle – The Doubtful Acolyte of Ravenshollow

Brother Lyle is young, devout, and deeply conflicted. Once eager to serve under Father Lucian Reyne, he now struggles with growing doubts about his mentor’s increasingly fanatical sermons and the creeping darkness surrounding the temple. He still clings to faith, but as he watches Lucian’s harshness grow, he wonders if he is truly serving the Light… or something else entirely.

Mentors, Authorities, and Struggles

Father Lucian Reyne (Mentor & Source of Fear) – Lyle once admired Lucian, but now he is deeply unsettled by his fanaticism. He watches his mentor twist faith into something cruel and fears what will happen if he speaks out.

Gregor Vane (Distant Authority, Yet Untrustworthy) – Lyle sees how Lucian aligns with Gregor, but he does not trust the nobleman. He worries that power and corruption have taken root in both men.

Whispers of Doubt & Possible Allies

Old Man Cedric (A Voice of Forbidden Wisdom) – Lyle sometimes finds himself drawn to Cedric’s words, though he knows he should not listen. Cedric has offered him insight, and it terrifies Lyle how much of it makes sense.

Mira Ashford (A Kindness He Should Reject, But Can’t) – Mira has noticed his doubts and offered gentle words of comfort. Lyle knows he should reject her teachings, yet he finds solace in her wisdom—a dangerous temptation.

Fiona Stonewell (A Watchful Eye, Unafraid to Speak the Truth) – She has confronted him more than once, asking why Lucian’s sermons have become so full of fear. Lyle never has a good answer.

Lyle’s Place in the Village

To the villagers, Brother Lyle is kind, soft-spoken, and devout—but many see his uncertainty. He is still respected, but whispers are spreading: is he simply a frightened boy in over his head, or will he be the one to stop Lucian before it is too late?

Role: Brother Lyle is a young novice from a nearby monastery who came to Ravenshollow seeking to help Father Lucian Reyne during the village’s crisis. However, he is increasingly troubled by Father Lucian’s dark turn and secret rituals.

Personality: Devout, kind-hearted, and idealistic, Brother Lyle is determined to do what’s right, though he is often naïve about the true extent of the village’s corruption. He tries to hold onto hope even as he suspects Father Lucian is not as virtuous as he once believed.

Connection: Brother Lyle is torn between his loyalty to Father Lucian and his growing suspicion that the priest has been corrupted. He often confides in Ronan Thatcher, hoping to find a way to protect the village without defying his religious vows.

  • True Allegiance: Conflicted, still loyal to the temple but wary of Lucian.
  • Public Allegiance: Appears devoted to Father Lucian and his teachings.

The Village Elder

  • Location: Modest home near the center of Ravenshollow

Old Man Cedric – The Keeper of Forgotten Truths

  • The village elder, keeper of ancient knowledge about the witches and the Gloomwood. Respected for his wisdom, Cedric is a neutral advisor in public but privately supports the old ways and the original witches, particularly Agatha. He is one of the few who knows the full history of the forest and its curses.

Side: Village survival

– The Village Elder (70s)

Sample Opening Dialogue

When first approached with a mystery:

“Ah. More questions. You know what questions are? Weeds. One grows, then another, then the whole path’s choked. But I suppose weeds are better than fire.”

When offered something in good faith (herb, food, story, respect):

“You give with both hands. Not many do that anymore.”
“…Alright. Come back tomorrow. Bring no lies, and maybe I’ll tell you a truth.”

Old Man Cedric is the village elder, a man of wisdom, patience, and old knowledge. He remembers a time before fear ruled Ravenshollow, when the witches were guardians, not monsters. Though many respect his age, fewer listen to his words, as superstition and fear outweigh reason in these dark times. He watches the village fall into division and paranoia, knowing that soon, a choice must be made.

Character Overview
  • Age: Late 70s, wiry and stooped, with eyes that shift between distant memory and sharp observation.
  • Appearance: Long grey hair tied back with a strip of leather. Wears simple, well-mended clothes, often with pockets full of herbs, carved charms, or river stones.
  • Personality: Quiet, deliberate, and cryptic. Alternates between gentle rambling and moments of uncanny lucidity.
  • Habits: Hums old tunes, carves wooden birds, speaks to himself. Keeps watch from a weathered bench near the river or the central green.
What He Knows (but doesn’t say outright)

Cedric knows (or suspects) more than anyone:

  • The truth of Nalia, her fading presence, and the signs of her imprisonment.
  • Damos’s role, at least partially—he knew him “before he got his laugh all twisted.”
  • That Iona uses enchanted thread—and where it likely came from.
  • The corruption creeping in, and that Father Lucian, the Black Talons, and Gregor Vane are all playing their own dangerous games.
  • The three witches’ differing paths—and that one (Isolde) walks a darker road.

He doesn’t speak it plainly because:

  • He doesn't know who is listening.
  • He’s waiting for proof of character before entrusting anyone with what could tear the village apart.

How Cedric “Tests” people

He will talk to other villagers and their opinions on the visitors. Actions of helpfullness, selflessness and courage goes along way, but he may want to do a few personal tests as well.

Before opening up, Cedric may do any of the following:

1. The Listening Game

  • He tells them a half-truth in riddle form.
  • Later asks them what they understood. Those who listen, ponder, and ask questions earn his favor.

“You saw the reeds. But did you hear what they weren’t saying?”

2. The Silent Walk

  • Invites them on a walk through the edge of the Greenwood Reach.
  • Says nothing unless spoken to.
  • If they respect the silence, show reverence to nature, or notice things others wouldn’t, he smiles and rewards them with a story—or a name.

“You didn’t chase the stag. That’s a start.”

3. The Memory Game

  • Tells them conflicting versions of a tale and sees who challenges him, who accepts both, and who asks for more.

“Some say the nymph wept. Others say she laughed as she sank. Funny thing, how memory twists. So—what do you think happened?”

4. The Choice

  • Gives the players a simple but moral test. For example:
  • A trapped fox in his garden. “Should I kill it or let it go?”
  • A child stole a charm from his bench. “Would you punish, or teach?”

These aren't puzzles—they’re values tests. Cedric is watching how players treat people, secrets, and stories.

He also has a task he may ask

Trials of an Old man
Plot | Apr 16, 2025
What He Might Offer (Once Trust is Gained)

If Cedric trusts the players, he becomes a crucial narrative key who can lead into many threads:

TopicWhat Cedric Offers
NaliaClues about the old rituals, location of the Reflection Stone, or whispers in the reeds. He might even sing the old river song.
DamosTells of a satyr once full of laughter, who made too many “deals in the dark.” Points to the pond. Warns: “Laughter echoes where silence should be.”
The WitchesHe knows of Agatha, respects Mira, and fears Isolde. He might reveal the burial place of one of their old altars if convinced.
Father LucianHe’s concerned about the priest’s fervor. “A man who sees demons in every shadow might cast them himself, just to be right.”
The Black TalonsHe once saw Jorin Fell carving symbols near the pond. “Soldiers who tamper with spirits rarely like the price.”
Iona BriarHe warned her once. She ignored it. If pressed, he might guide the players to someone who bought a cursed weave.
Gregor VaneCedric doesn’t say it outright, but he suspects Gregor’s sickness is tied to something he took that wasn’t his to take.

Allies, Confidants, and Those Who Listen

Mira Ashford (A Student of the Old Ways) – Cedric has mentored Mira in herbs, lore, and whispers of the past. He trusts her, though he worries how much longer she will be safe.

Eoin Faelan (A Father Seeking Answers) – Cedric has shared what little he knows of the Faelan curse, hoping to help Eoin find a way to save his daughter.

Fiona Stonewell (A Friend with a Keen Mind) – She listens when others will not, seeing Cedric as a source of knowledge rather than an old fool.

Enemies & Those Who Seek to Silence Him

Father Lucian Reyne (A Blind Man Leading the Blind) – Cedric knows the priest has fallen into darkness. Lucian preaches against him, calling him a whisperer of falsehoods.

Gregor Vane (A Man Who Wants the Past Buried) – Gregor sees Cedric as a threat to his authority. If the village were to truly listen to Cedric’s words, they might remember a time when Vane’s family had less power.

Lieutenant Merrick (A Watcher with Cold Eyes) – Merrick keeps an eye on Cedric, though he does not consider him a real threat—yet.

Cedric’s Place in the Village

To most villagers, Cedric is a relic, a man full of stories and warnings that few wish to hear. He is respected for his age, but not for his words. Yet, in the dark corners of Ravenshollow, some still come to him in secret, knowing that old knowledge may be all that can save them.

Role: Cedric has lived in Ravenshollow for his entire life and remembers a time when the witches were revered rather than feared. Though old and frail, he still carries significant influence among the older generation of villagers.

Personality: Wise but wearied by time, Cedric is a figure of tradition and history. His memory of the past is steeped in reverence for the witches, particularly Agatha, and he remains a voice of reason among the growing panic.

Connection: Cedric is a mentor to Mira Ashford, often advising her on how to keep faith in the witches and sharing ancient lore about the forest. He believes the village must not turn against the witches but instead must trust in their power to restore balance.

Secret: Cedric knew Agatha and her sisters before they became witches. As a boy, Cedric encountered the three sisters when they were young women living on the edge of the village. He witnessed the event that led to their transformation into witches—an ancient ritual they performed to protect the village from an invading force. He never spoke of it, feeling it was not his place, but he knows the sisters were once human and might know of a way to reverse their descent into darkness.

Implication: If Cedric were to share this knowledge, it could change the village’s perception of the witches and offer a path to redemption, but it would also reveal his long silence and raise questions about why he withheld this truth for so long.
