Chasm of Ullek

Ullek, in the days before the God Wars was the largest city within Menaphos. The South-eastern Menaphosian Desert was much more wooded in the Second Age, in stark contrast to its arid climate today. The economic, environmental, and architectural benefits of this attracted many settlers, who ultimately founded the city of Ullek. Unfortunately, reliable information on the early days of Ullek is very rare. During its glory days, Ullek was the most prosperous of all the desert cities, surpassing even Uzer in power. Evidently the two cities were closely connected, and shared the same Pharaoh along with smaller cities such as Sophanem and parts of the Bedabin wildlands. As one of the few prominent settlements in the region, it faced little opposition, safe from the bandits and caravans of slavers that roamed the desert even in ancient times. A common practice of the people of Ullek was create clay golems that would protect the city. The Golems were very unique and exceptionally strong for their time. The art of actually creating said golems has been long lost to time, but on occasion clay golems have been unearthed that are still functional.   In modern days, there are very few remnants of the ancient city that still exist. The chasm that exists there today marks a clear border within Menaphos. On the southern side of Ullek, are The Black Sands, a region in which demonic forces continue to thrive and have formed their own unique society. They refuse to engage in trade with the remainder of Menaphos and mostly taken to a life of isolation for the most part. Travelling over the chasm is difficult, as there is no bridge or easy way to cross it. Attempts have been made to build an easy crossway by Menaphosians in an effort to rebuild relations with the Uzerian Demons, but the feelings were not mutual and any attempts at the opening of trade routes or even the semblance of a positive relationship have been refused by the Uzerians.   Few travel to the bottom of the chasm as it extends very deep, and is regarded as a very dangerous location. Filled with hordes of undead at the bottom, and other nightmarish entities it's believed that there are likely many remnants of the ancient city of Ullek that could potentially be recovered if it wasn't for the inherent hazards. The dangers of the chasm seem to be isolated only to the immediate surrounding areas, and is not considered an ongoing threat to Menaphosian society. It is also often believed that many Scabarites have holed up in the chasm, using it as a hive of sorts for those who have reached enlightenment.
