Catherby
Catherby is perhaps the most famous of the settlements that are part of the "Marina Coast"- a strip of fishing settlements down the eastern Kandarin coast. It's generally seen as the most successful, and home to many master fishermen. Catherby is currently led by Duke Arhein Hickton, a retired fisherman whom earned the respect of the citizens through his career as a fisherman. He is regarded as a very wise man who loves the ocean, and even though he's now retired and is often very busy with work, it isn't uncommon to find him relaxing on a small fishing vessel- fishing rod in hand, out on the water.
In the years leading up to Arhein Hickton's involvement in the political world, Arhein, had little to no interest in involving himself with it. It was only when around 15 years ago, Ardougne began to put forth unfair trade agreements that would have some long term detrimental effects on the industry. The previous Duke, Duke Harry Dantaera, was happy to make any trade deals with neighbouring cities that would net him some easy coin, and upon the discovery of the corruption, a small coup led by many of the fishermen would occur. Arhein Hickton, was believed to be one of the main individuals who organised the coup. After Duke Dantaera fell from power, there were very few who were ready and willing to take lead. Many would look to Arhein Hickton to become the next Duke, but at every turn he would refuse. Several years would pass as the leadership of Catherby would change hands, and each time, the position would breed a Duke more corrupt than the last. Arhein Hickton would eventually crumble to the pressure on him to lead the city, as many believed him to be a good man through and through, incapable of succumbing to the money and power that would be granted to him. Arhein reluctantly accepted the position, "only until someone else came a long", however since entering office he hasn't left for 12 years.
There's an old fisherman's tale about a sea monster thats been seen around the waters along the Marina Coast. It's believed to be an 80 foot long fish like monster with 20 rows of teeth in it's mouth. It's been given the name "Thalassus", and some fishermen have treated it like a sort of demi god. It's common for many fishermen along the Marina Coast to carry a small bone charm in the shape of a fish, as it's said to ward off an attack by Thalassus. Many fishermen will also say prayers to Thalassus before any fishing trips they make. While Thalassus has never been officially documented, the excessive reports of the creature have led many to believe it to very real. Though it's existence has perplexed scholars and historians with how a creature of such magnitude is able to thrive in the modern day world, or where it even came from. Some believe it to be from a prehistoric era, and has lived through many millennia. But for many fishermen, the mysteries surrounding Thalassus- while are certainly cause for fear, are also what makes the entity that much more enthralling. Many fishermen have dreamt of the day that they could be the one to catch Thalassus themselves.
