The Return: Session #12

General Summary

The heroes left the Foxglove Manor, but attempted to burn it down as they left. The black mold of Vorel Foxglove proved to be beyond their ability to harm it or the manor , and the heroes left it for now.

Heading out in the rain, the heroes headed towards the capital of Kaduna, the city of Harcourt, to attempt to track down the people behind their enemies.

Their first stop was to find a place to stay, and they chose an upscale inn called The Third Ostrich. While enjoying some drinks, they kept their ears open to listen for local happenings. They learned that murders had been haunting the town--- especially local nobles, merchants, and other wealthy individuals. The rumors suggested the victims were dismembered in ways similar to how Aldern Foxglove had been killing his victims.

Wanting to look into the items taken from the Dwarven shipwreck, the heroes made their ways down to the docks and met Captain Fenne and his wife, Nora. Giving money to Nora, they learned of who the couple had sold the majority of the dwarven items to in Harcourt.

Captain Fenne's new impressive clothing impressed the heroes, and they sought out an expensive tailor to update their own clothing.

After a good night's rest, the heroes sought out Aldern Foxglove's townhouse and found a boarded up building in a rich side of town. They used the key they found on Aldern to enter, and were shocked to find the deceased Aldern and Iesha sitting down to have tea.

The two didn't seem too concerned about the intruding heroes, and invited them to tea. Only Kurdan and Felicia drank the tea, and the party weren't too surprised to find the tea poisoned. Iesha attempted to escape while Aldern turned into some horrible creature composed of fleshy muscle and claws.

Kurdan and Tiny Tim dealt with the fake Aldern while Bartuk used his magic to subdue fake Iesha. Attempting to interrogate fake Iesha proved to be a challenge as she had no concern for her own well being, and only wished to serve the mysterious Xanesha. Fake Iesha referred to Xanesha as the Mistress of the Five Veils and the Terror of the Mountain. While Fake Iesha would not betray Xanesha, she did offer the heroes the location of Xanesha's allies: The Brotherhood.

After dispatching with Fake Iesha, they searched the townhouse and found evidence backing up what they were told about the Brotherhood's location: Helm's Lumbermill.

The scoped out the place, and during the day it appeared to be a normal lumbermill.

Returning at night, they began to plan their assault when they spotted a floating object released from beneath the lumbermill. Kurdan dove into the river and pulled the item aside, and found a body wrapped in sheets. The body had the seven sided star carved into its chest, but also had ruins painted on the body marking it as a sacrifice to the Ocean. The heroes found this extremely odd, as both rituals were dedicating the soul of the dead person to a particular source.

Entering the lumbermill, the heroes peeked into the lowest level where the waterwheels were operating. Inside the loud room, they saw three workers preparing another body to put into the river. Not wasting the chance at surprise, the heroes burst into the room and slaughtered their foes. Before they died, the workers pulled on masks wielded weapons similar to what Aldern Foxglove wore in their final confrontation.
