Personal history
Orl'rk doesn't know where he was born. His parents were sailors who claimed he was "born on the water." He had a happy childhood and his parents were fairly wealthy as traders. Growing up as a teenager, he knew boats better than he knew land, and could put more than a few of his parents' crewmates to shame with his intuition for the sails.
Of course, the peaceful times did not last too long. His parents were viciously slain by the marauding Orcs in Felora. He only lived because his body washed up ashore, but he didn't go down before seeing both of his parents decapitated.
An orphan like many others, he was left to fend for himself in unknown territory. Were it not for a wildling with a kind heart, he would have never survived. This wildling, of a species he had never seen, had taken on 2 orcs to protect him throughout this time.
The wildling did not speak to him, but he could feel its intentions and learned the language of the body, and slowly learned a basic understanding of the land. One day, just as they approached a small village on the fringes of the wild, the wildling left, and never returned. He knew their time was over, and he was grateful.
Riverdrift was a hamlet of not much more than 3 large families, located near a broad river of decent depth. They were groups of humans, elves, and half-elves, content in their community and desperately trying to avoid political affairs. He would learn that the settlement was bigger, in the past, but numerous raids and fires had killed or forced their people to relocate.
He spent a few years here, helping rebuild the village and defend it against various small raiding parties. They were lucky - they had been able to handle them. But the soil in this area became more barren after every winter. The families began to plan accordingly.
Orl'rk knew that his new home would not last. Over the course of 3 years, and with help from the abled youth, he began building his parents' boat - with a few modifications. The boat was great, but it could be better.
When the time came for plans to come to fruition, they found they were leaving just in time. Orl'rk had found great comaradery with these youth - they were apt and learned quickly, and he knew he could guide them into becoming exceptional sailors. Most of the people of Riverdrift were gone when one last raiding party came, and slauthered the remainders. Orl'rk got grim word of this years after the fact.
This primarily is what inspired Orl'rk to become the person he is today.
