General Summary

That evening, Adrie sneaks into the room of Joycelin Bird, and finds various valuables and letters secreted in a chest under her bed. The following day, Adrie defends herself and the rest of the party against charges of kidnapping and sorcery in a crowded Council Hall. She avoids triggering First Prohetess Felicia Beaurepaire’s detection spell – or perhaps this is the result of the gold skull judiciously donated to Ferdous Crugg the day before. At the end of her appearance before the Council, she turns over Sanballat’s letter to the Lord Reeve as evidence, and also makes a public accusation against smugglers operating out of the Haunted House, and their “supporters in town”. Alston Salley visibly goes white at that mention.
Subsequently, Tauflin visits Bartholomew Brocksby the notary. He discovers that Crugg is the main import-export merchant in town, who may stand the most to lose from smuggling activity. However, he also finds that the town seal which is used to mark all goods on which a duty has been paid went missing a few years ago, and had to be replaced. Meanwhile, Adrie, with the help of Aster and Brandon, sneaks back into Joycelin’s room, and steals the letters from her chest. The letters, which pledge love and promise elopement are from various admirers, including the Lord Reeve Eustace Osgood, as well as a certain “N”, and “S”. The group plans sitdowns with both Salley and Crugg.
