Then

The Then are the natives of the western region of Then, and make up its majority. They have a long and proud history, certainly the longest in the region. Even their conquerors, the Niungdes, have adopted Then culture, rather than forcing theirs on the Then. Some Then resent their foreign rulers or the few customs they have brought with them, but most are content with the internal peace and stability the Niungdes have brought. Their history stretches far back into myth, supposedly being created by the great dragon-lord 首龍, Súliùng, "first dragon", identified with Sahrin of Blackrock. This claim puts them at odds with the saurian species who live in Blackrock, as they claim descent from Sahrin and the dragons, and also claim Sahrin to be still alive, while the Then claim Súliùng as long dead. This origin myth is reflected in their names for themselves: 天人 Tiênnyìn, meaning "sky people", and Then, 天國 Tiêngoet, "sky country". According to legend, the first nine emperors of Then were dragon lords, starting with Súliùng and followed by his desendants, each more cruel and degenerate than the last, until the Then, led by the mythical figure Nyìndi, overthrew Líliùng, "plum dragon", drove the dragons out of Then to Blackrock, and Nyìndi founded the Ti Dynasty, with himself as Then's first human emperor.
Their culture is reserved, with great importance placed on hierarchy and deference. Familial piety and duty to the state and to the emperor are important cultural forces in Then society, and they create states with large, highly efficient, and uncompromising bureaucracies to run things like courts, guilds, and treasury. Most Then religion revolves around ancestor worship, though Shant Karotu, particularly the Sikmath sect, has become increasingly popular. Representing a threat to imperial authority, it has been banned within Sarkon.
