Mahanjatis

The Mahanjat is a great tribe that coalesced over a century ago from several smaller tribes who all share a common cultural heritage in the ancient Kushan people and religion. The largest of these groups are the Baltun and Burjmani from the north, the Shrivali and Pashyavam of the south, and the Chola, Limpali, and Manthar of the west. They live in a society dominated by custom, though the customs vary dramatically from one place and people to another. Those in the west, further towards Then, tend towards more social stratification and a higher emphasis on order as compared to the more libertine and independent easterners. The humid and bountiful regions occupying much of the heartlands of the Mahanjat are seen as friendlier than the more arid reaches of the far east and north. Rivalries exist among the tribes of the Mahanjat, though these are mostly deflated through bi-annual competitions held in the Mahanjat for its various peoples to compete against each other involving contests of athleticism, poetry, and rhetoric. The Mahanjat itself is ruled by a king elected by the princes of each tribe in a complicated college with each prince’s representation allotted by the size and importance of his tribe. The Mahanjat can be thought of as a loose confederation of peoples and states in semi-voluntary suzerainty to their elected king, and its people are as widely varied as the places they inhabit.

Mahanjati Names

Mahanjati naming conventions vary between the different peoples that make up the Mahanjat. Some Mahanjatis, especially those from the less populated hinterlands of the east, are mononymous, having only a given name. Many Mahanjatis carry an additional name, though its nature can vary, with some having a heritable family name, others an epithet (nickname), or a toponym (named after where they're from).
