Unique Beings

Genesis is home to any number of powerful beings, many of which are named and unique. Whether well-known or a local phenomenon of whatever shard they've decided to make their home, they're often the subject of myth, legend, and cautionary tales.   The following is a list of some of these creatures, though there are far more spread across the shards of Genesis; for a list of general magical species or groupings, see Beasts and Spirits. Some individuals listed on this page may also be listed under Notable Characters.

Unique Beings of Genesis and the Old World

'CETUS'
Naga, hostile
Rumored to be a monstrous being imprisoned somewhere the Mediterranean Sea of the Old World, 'Cetus' is in actually Karkess, the first male naga who was imprisoned by the Bull Reaper in the distant past. He lives magically chained in a sea cave under the Greek coastline.   FIFTH
Hidewalker's Cursed, hostile
One of the ancient humans cursed by the Hidewalker for hunting and eating the shapeshifters who offered them friendship, Fifth had settled into Great Sky Shard and was waging war against the shapeshifter clans there. He fought and was ultimately killed by the Reaper Kenneth Hunter.   GEIST
Freed Spirit, neutral
Despite being an old, powerful Freed Spirit, Geist is a startlingly frequent guest among the elves of Fyrenstone Shard. Finding mortal companionship highly preferable to a solitary existence below the ice, the enigmatic creature can often be found telling stories and chatting away somewhere along the city docks; the inhabitants of Snowsong know that Geist is a dangerous being who can pose a very real threat to mortal lives, but consider his vast magical knowledge and willingness to answer mortal questions a good enough reason to tolerate him so long as he behaves himself. As for Geist, he does seem to have a genuine fondness for the city's children and has actually been trusted to help safeguard them when the city has come under attack.   THE GHOST OF SARTÉNA
Unknown, hostile
Presumed to be a ghost or other undead creature, the Ghost of Sarténa was a being that briefly haunted the city of Sarténa in Astara Shard. Appearing following a period of unsettling activity involving the dead, it's rumored that it was the ghost of a local woman who was falsely accused of being a rogue Binder and hanged. Whatever the Ghost was, it wasn't seen again after attacking and killing the supposedly deeply corrupt lord of the city.   THE GRAY LADY
Freed Spirit, neutral
Appearing relatively recently, the Gray Lady is a Freed Spirit dwelling in the wild parts of Avalon Shard. She appears walking abroad on the moors when the mists are thick and tempts mortals, especially men, to follow her into the gloom; while she doesn't appear to be malicious so much as lonely, it's said that those who answer her call only sometimes return. Her permanent dwelling place appears to be a low-lying area of the land that's become perpetually filled with thick fog and mist, now referred to as Voidhollow, and it's theorized that the place may have become an open door to the Dreamroad similar to the entrance thought to exist on the Isle itself.   GRIEF
Freed Spirit, hostile
Though he resembles a traditional shade or haunt, Grief is actually a Freed Spirit formed from the death of a WW2 soldier in the Old World. Though he seems like a charming, harmlessly eccentric being, trusting his intentions is a fatal mistake; he's deeply malicious, and wants nothing more than the total downfall of the family whose estate he haunts. Grief can make himself seen or unseen at will, and is more than powerful enough to interact physically with the world and its inhabitants.   THE GUARDIAN
Unknown, neutral
A powerful entity of unknown intentions, very little is known about the Guardian other than the fact that its name crops up here and there in ancient vampiric texts. It seems to take great interest in the dynamics of power among the vampire clans, and the corresponding dynamic between the Blood Gods .   KHAMET
Unknown, neutral
Thought to be the first of the Reaper line who lives on as the Hidewalker's undying companion, Khamet is a great beast of unknown species that inhabits the mists of the Dreamroad. While he assumedly possesses human intelligence, he's a silent presence and rarely seen; when he is, it's always at the side of the Wild God.   THE LADY OF THE LAKE
Unknown, hostile
A being about who very little is known, the Lady is an aggressive and powerful spirit guarding the sacred isle of Avalon. Seen only as a dim silhouette floating in the isle's everpresent mists, she judges whether or not a mortal is worthy of setting foot on Avalon and has little pity for any who try to challenge her decision. While her voice sounds human, it's described as extremely unsettling by those who've heard it. The only mortals she seems ambivalent to are the Hounds of Eihel who serve as ferryman across the lake; she's never been known to harm a Hound, and spares them on the rare occasion she turns her wrath on a petitioner.   THE MARI LLWYD
Freed Spirit, benign
A Freed Spirit of unknown origin, the Mari Llwyd strongly resembles the myth-figure of the same name in Old World Welsh tradition. It's thought to have taken on this form in order to be familiar to the people of the small magic-blooded community it appears to guard; unusually for a Freed Spirit, the Mari exists in the Old World. Initially a subject of concern due to the Reapers characteristics it bears (skeletal, animalistic, trailing red ribbons), it's come to be a somewhat beloved secret of the locals.   THE MOON EATER
Freed Spirit, hostile
A Freed Spirit who was a powerful mage in life, the being that calls itself the Moon Eater has only grown more powerful in death. With no apparent ties to any particular location he seems to travel aimlessly, bringing destruction at random before disappearing once more; the few who've survived his unprovoked attacks say that the only warning sign was the vanishing of the moon and stars, a result of the dark shadowstuff forming the basis of the Moon Eater's magic. His only objective seems to be the gathering of magical knowledge and secrets, the possession of which is the sole point of commonality between his victims.   MURIAS
Helhest, neutral
A helhest who has chosen to bond with the human Bran ap Lugh after allying with him to destroy a group of necromancer-Binders. Murias is able to travel beyond the confines of the graveyard in New Avalon that he used to be the guardian of as a result of his bond, but will inevitably have to return when his bonded partner dies. While he's not capable of speech or easy communication, Murias seems to be of above animal intelligence and appears quite capable of responding to Bran's directions or questions.   NYCTO
Freed Spirit, neutral
A powerful Freed Spirit of unknown origin, chained in the Well of Souls in Iram Shard by a past Reaper. Nycto has the unique ability to see and interact with ghosts, no matter how powerful and whether they’re currently corporeal or not, and spent centuries safeguarding and managing the spirits of the Well before being freed of his bonds by the necromancer Llir ap Lugh. He has a natural dominance over the spirits around him and is capable of commanding their obedience. While he has the potential to be extremely dangerous due to his abilities combined with his natural size and strength, Nycto’s motivations remain unknown and he seems content to simply follow and observe his chosen human ‘partner’.   THE OASIS SPIRIT
Unknown, neutral
Sometimes called the Spirit of the Duat, the Oasis Spirit is a being dwelling deep in the desert of southern Iram. Not well-known except by the locals, it's said to offer solace to those willing to make the dangerous leap of faith involved in finding its remote home; one night to ease the heart's deepest desire, if the spirit should find you worthy. Not everyone earns the spirit's reward, though, and those who are found lacking tend to never return from their trips int the desert.   OLD NIGHT
Altered Vampire, hostile
Old Night is the monstrous servant to the vampire goddess Rathae, acting as her messenger and the instrument of her wrath. Rumor says that he was once a mortal vampire who caught the goddess's eye, but upon becoming her lover grew too proud; when he mistakenly thought himself worthy of being her consort, Rathae turned on him and warped him into something so hideous that he'd inspire fear in all who saw him. If that's the case, then it wasn't an empty promise. Old Night is a being that inspires dread by his very presence, even and perhaps particularly among the followers of Rathae, and he is always a sure sign of misfortune to come.   THE SCRIBE
Original Vampire, neutral
The only mortal survivor of the same original vampire race that spawned the Blood Gods, the Scribe has spent so much time in the The Worldshadow that he's hardly recognizable compared to the vampires of the present day. He's a strange, solitary being that relies on Lore's protection from his ascended kin; never leaving the Shadow's boundaries, he maintains a vast repository of knowledge due to his divinely appointed role of recording all the events of history.   SHATTERGLASS
Unknown, hostile
A byproduct of the Bound One's chaining, the creature known as Shatterglass is a single mind in three monstrous bodies and was formed out of raw divine magic and emotion. It was born out of the reflections cast off of stained glass windows; still connected to the god, it serves as an extension of his will and guards his prison, with its three bodies are known by the emotions they were created from (Agony, Despair, and Hatred). Thankfully, Shatterglass seems incapable of leaving the constraints of the Bound One's prison and only poses a threat to those who have the misfortune to find the place and step inside.   THE STARKEEPER
Freed Spirit, benign
The resident 'ghost' of the Cathedral of Tanith in New Avalon, the Starkeeper is actually an ancient Freed Spirit who's lived there since his death before the founding of the city proper. He's able to channel the powerful magical energy of the fallen star that the cathedral is founded around and serves as the place's guardian, but his services haven't been called upon in a very long time due to the peace since the formation of Genesis. Nowadays, he's a well-known presence but has little interaction with the priests or visitors of the cathedral; most often he's seen staning at the upper windows looking out, simply fading from sight when approached.
