Beacon

Beacon, also known as the Shining Star, is a township located in northern Calenoria. It hosts the country's second-largest lighthouse, the Skybeacon, for which the town is named. Beacon is primarily a fishing town, and though it is often overlooked in favor of the much larger and more influential Briar-Rose Port, it does receive a respectable amount of trade from Vaettfang by way of Pinefrost to redistribute further down the coast.
From the point of its founding in -, Beacon has been considered one of twelve holy cities throughout Calenoria, with Cerkael serving as its patron. As such, it is one of the oldest settlements in Calenoria, and is rarely in conflict with the wishes of the crown.
Contrary to its consecrated past, it is also known to be the location of a yearly haunting, wherein the spirits of the town's deceased come from the sea and scour the town for offerings of food and drink. They occupy the town for a single night and return to the sea at daybreak.
The symbol of Beacon is the shape of a lighthouse holding a glowing star within its lantern chamber.

Description

Beacon is a quiet coastal town that extends from the shoreline inland and down along the starshine river. Most of the inhabitants reside in farms and houses further away from the coast to make room for trade shops and fisheries on the water.
In order to remain an attractive waypoint for seafaring traders, the townsfolk take great care to maintain the buildings closest to the shoreline, with the grandest shops and manor houses nestling right up against the Skybeacon. Although it is known as the second-tallest lighthouse in the kingdom, the Skybeacon stands at an impressive height and can still be seen for miles in any direction.

A local garrison of the Calenorian Royal Guard stand watch over the town, though most of the soldiers have never been outside of Beacon, and are comprised of locals who wished to earn an easy wage. Other than the occasional pickpocket or brawl in the docks, Beacon is an otherwise quiet town with little crime.
Outside of this, the Skybeacon is guarded by two paladins of Cerkael — members of the Levinguard. They maintain their station to ensure the safety of the lighthouse and its keepers in times of crisis.

History

The Skybeacon is kept by the Wuthers family, as the duty was granted to Janick Wuthers at the town's founding in gratitude for his piety to Cerkael. Janick's descendants have preserved this legacy, and continue to watch over the lighthouse to this day.
