Leyline Aurora

Written by starzomskiwrites

Manifestation

The Leyline Aurora appears similar to the aurora borealis common to the northern lands of Geloriel, but with many more colors than the natural aurora. It appears in curtains, ribbons, spirals and flickers of light in colors such as pink, green, blue, red, purple, sometimes even orange and yellow. It appears in the sky at any time, though it is much more visible in the darker nights than during a pale blue day. Additionally, clouds in the sky cover the lights of a Leyline Aurora. Some Auroras have occurred during rainy seasons, and nobody even knew until the strange effects manifested. Leyline Aurorae typically last anywhere from a day to a handful of weeks.

Localization

A Leyline Aurora appears anywhere where there is a strong convergence of leylines, and most often at night. Wherever leylines converge, a Leyline Aurora has been seen, and soon will be seen, though it seemingly happens at random intervals. The only documented fashion that a Leyline Aurora happens for any specific reason is when lots of magic or very high-level magic is harnessed in a leyline convergence, which seems to trigger the phenomenon.
Oftentimes, when a Leyline Aurora appears, strange magical effects come with it. Spells cast under the lights of an Aurora have a chance to go wild, some who live under an Aurora undergo an epiphany that provides strange insights and grant temporary arcane abilities, and many Wild Magic sorcerers have been born under the strange effects of an Aurora.

Mechanics of a Leyline Aurora

When a Leyline Aurora manifests, it takes 1d3 days for its effects to actually begin occuring. Until then, the Aurora is just lights in the sky. Once its effects actually do begin to take hold, it produces effects similar to that of the Unraveling Magic table from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything 2d6 hours after the last effect, starting when the effects first take hold.
Additionally, whenever a spell of 1st level or higher is cast under an active Aurora, roll a d20. On a 1, roll on the Wild Magic table from the Player's Handbook. On an 11, roll twice on the Wild Magic table from the Player's Handbook.
