The Casket

The Casket is the ceremonial coffin once used to entomb Carntral, which is now held by the Forsaken.   The Casket is one of the most potent magical sources in Gelinia, corrupting those who enter its presence and provoking extreme violence. It is displayed on the altar at the heart of the Vale, where its influence is free to spread throughout the forest. Carntral rarely leaves the Casket, preferring to act through the Forsaken, who obey its commands unquestioningly.   Originally a simple black coffin, the Casket has been decorated over the years by the Forsaken with spoils of war, typically gold and rubies arranged in lavish carvings. Carntral also demands sacrifice, so the Casket is surrounded by fiendish designs of skulls, entrails, and other bloody trophies, maintained by Forsaken raiding parties.

History

One hundred years after the Cataclysm, Auros decided to cut out its own heart to be free from desire and find peace. Its separated heart became Carntral, embodiment of the rage, passion, and hatred that Auros had cast off. Auros ordered Carntral locked away inside an onyx sarcophagus deep inside the Black Pyramid.   However, the Casket was unable to fully contain Carntral's magical aura, and eventually corrupted others in the pyramid. A senior umbra named Pradlyob snuck into the Casket's resting place, and upon opening it, was struck with the full force of Carntral's pent up fury. He became the first Forsaken, gaining immense strength along with an uncontrollable bloodlust. During his initial rampage, Pradlyob slaughtered hundreds, and the renewed power of Carntral corrupted others, who carried the Casket out of the Pyramid and into Exar.   Pradlyob was eventually put down, but is revered today as the Father of the Forsaken. Meanwhile, the bearers of the Casket carved a path of destruction through Exar, taking up a permanent residence in the northeastern forest Valley, which became known as the Vale. Crude fortifications and temples were constructed around its resting place, called by outsiders simply "the cursed city."
