Singularity Reactor

Utility

These devices worked by initiating a "little bang", creating a small artificial singularity within the reaction chamber and then merging it with the local fabric of spacetime. This would trigger an immensely fast but highly localized expansion of spacetime, tearing matter and energy out of the "foaming vacuum" of quantum energy. This would resolve as a quantity of matter and antimatter which would subsequently annihilate.    The high energy radiation and particles would then be captured and converted into usable energy. The net energy required to produce and merge the singularity was only about half what the reaction produced, leading to a net energy gain with each initiation of the process. The bias of matter to antimatter generated when this micro universe was created could be manipulated. By default a very small amount of matter would be left over but by altering the properties the ratio of matter to antimatter would be manipulated.    If it was too biased, the reactor would produce insufficient energy to recycle its own process, as not enough material would be generated and subsequently annihilated. Manipulating this bias could produce matter (mostly hydrogen, helium and lithium) to be used as fusion fuel or reaction mass. Or antimatter (to be used to prime antimatter warheads).   The result was a powerful and compact source of near-infinitely renewable energy. This made it highly preferential for military applications due to ability to have a power source that could be mounted onboard a mobile warship, and one that could continue to function without the need for fueling logistics.

Manufacturing

Singularity reactors typically resemble conway spheres/expanded dodecahedra. With 12 pentagonal faces and numerous hexagonal ones creating a spherical form factor. Wedges are assembled containing the various gravitational and electromagnetic manipulation equipment to generate the singularity. These will be encased inside a heavily armored shell which shields the delicate internal components from damage from cosmic rays or potentially weapons fire when used in military applications.

Social Impact

The public impact of the discovery of such a technology was immense. Being an endlessly renewable source of energy and matter it has assuaged many a existential crisis about the potential heat death of the universe. However some scientists have studied regions of space where large numbers of these reactors are used on high power, and have noted anomalous readings.    Concluding that pulling such immense amounts of energy from the quantum foam incurs a debt on the local spacetime which may impact the functionality of these devices and accelerates the expansion of spacetime in that region. Many gaussian scientists argue that the reactors are not truly in violation of thermodynamics but instead are tapping their energy from a finite but arbitrarily large pool of background energy, and that each firing of the reactor creates a rupture in spacetime allowing the energy to flow through. The full ramifications of this technology are not yet known, though many agree that they are "playing with fire" through the use of these devices, as even they do not completely understand how the technology works and most of the progress in development has been trial and error and slowly sorting through a library's worth of equations to see incremental improvement in the technology.

Access & Availability
Singularity reactors are primarily utilized by the GDAN to construct their warships. Some are occasionally seen as parts of civilian and industrial infrastructure but due to the high cost and abundance of hydrogen; it is cheaper to run more basic fusion or solar based power which can provide more than enough energy for civilian applications. Hence those installed in infrastructure are typically outdated models from warships. The specifications and schematics of modern military-grade reactors are highly classified. Though iterations of the technology do exist on the public market.   Some known models of the MX series of reactors produced by Assiduous cooperative shipyards.
  • The MX-200 Utilized by the Lucidity Class Light Cruiser
  • The MX-350 Utilized by the Vigilance Class Cruiser and FEWIS stations
  • The MX-1K Utilized by Aggressor class battlecruisers and Falconer class battleships
  • The MX-2500 Utilized by Omniscience class battleships and Relegator Class Dreadnoughts
  • The MX-5K On Planetary Defense Cannons
  • The MX-7500 On Paragon class and defiant class Dreadnoughts
Discovery
Singularity reactors were discovered from a program studying energy to matter conversion. The first "reactors" were large chambers attempting to draw exotic matter out of the quantum foam.
