Broken Knuckle Altar
Broken Knuckle Altar refers both to a specific abbey and to the monastic community that inhabits it.
Structure
Broken Knuckle Altar is led by a governing council of five called the Fist. Each member of that council is called a "Fracture Keeper" and is responsible for a particular aspect of order traditions and material necessities.
Any monk bound to Broken Knuckle Altar may challenge a Fracture Keeper for their position in the Fist. This contest, called a Splinter, takes the form of a martial bout, often to the death. The victor of the Splinter takes or retains the title of Fracture Keeper. The loser, if alive, is exiled.
Culture
Broken Knuckle Altar revere strength and power above all else. The grounds of the Altar constantly ring out in sounds of combat as monks test themselves against one another, as well as satisfy grudges and feuds through the application of violence. Needless to say, the ability and willingness to impart force upon sentient beings is a formidable principle of the organization. Indeed, most bound to the Altar enjoy the continuous martial contests, as it provides moments to illustrate their own strength and physical prowess.
Public Agenda
The goals of Broken Knuckle Altar have never been publically declared. Most observers assume, however, that territorial conquest must be chief among them.
Assets
In addition to Broken Knuckle Abbey--which is a sprawling compound carved into solid rock--the Altars have considerable material resources. Most of this wealth comes from two revenue streams--the tributes offered by those who reside in the areas under the protection of the monks; and the "pilgrimages" undertaken in the controlled territory of the myriad enemies of the order.
The Fist of the Illhand is considered a powerful and priceless relic by the Altars.
History
Although emerging as early as 869 AC, the monks date the "true" founding of their order to the first Splinter, in which Aerle the Illhand was victorious over Olumpet Silkstep, becoming the first Fracture Keeper and assuming leadership of the Altars. Eventually, four other Fracture Keepers were added, forming the Fist. Over time, Broken Knuckle Altar amassed a sizeable amount of territorial control from their compound deep in The Break.
Upon her death in noble combat in 901 AC, her fellow monks cast the Illhand's fists in stone, as is tradition for monks that fall in service to the order.
