Initially created in 381 AS, the swiftide was the first of it's kind - a keelboat that could reach speeds previously unseen by crafts so small. The swiftide's speed is what gained it a lot of popularity among the nobles, who would race across shallow waters in their free time as a sign of social standing. Although the first model of the swiftide was never allowed to be used in the World Class Shallowrun Derby, its future versions were. The reason for this was because when the swiftide was initially released, it was only demonstrated to the highest paying nobles, and in turn on those nobles who attended demonstrations actually brought the first model. This gave them an unfair advantage in friendly races between their peers, and so it was decided by the governing bodies of the Shallowrun Derby that the first model would be banned from racing.   By the time the second model was announced, it was already being mass produced, and so every sailing enthusiast with their eyes set on the Shallowrun 387 Derby prize had already pre-ordered their own. Anyone who had previously thought of buying the first model had since seen the improved sailing speed of the second, and so by the time the Shallowrun 387 Derby rolled around and it's governing body was ready to lift the ban on the first swiftide model, nobody was using it to race. Because of this, the ban on the first swiftide model was never lifted.   The swiftide has come a long way since its inception, with many other manufacturing companies taking parts of its design and using it for their own version, though none have really come close to being able to compete with the original models.   Common models currently used in the Shallowrun Derby are:
  • The X Series - built with stronger sails in mind, current model number is XS-250
  • The Breeze Series - built with better sail maneuverability in mind, current model number is BR013-S
  • The Jet Cross - built with speed in mind, current model number is 104JC
  • The King's Series - slightly higher in price for better customisation, also built with speed in mind, current model number is KING-5040
