Ooda Settlement in Gamma World | World Anvil

Ooda

Ooda is one of very few places outside Taebur that people in Taebur might have heard of or know anything about. It is a bustling town that has characteristically acted as a trade hub for people crossing the continent east-west or vice versa. It has managed to maintain a reputation for fairness and minimal amounts of crime. It is notable for generating its own supply of electricity that most residents have access to, and for having a working radio transmitter that lets it communicate with settlements far beyond, most that are completely unknown to inhabitants of Taebur.   Very recently, however, Ooda has begun a transformation that could change it into a very different place. At the beginning of Apr (98 AF in Coop reckoning), the city council announced that it had made an agreement with the Peace Brigade for the Brigade's protection. The Peace Brigade has now moved into town, bringing with it 5000 troops. They quickly erected a temporary fence while a more durable wall and further fortifications are constructed.   Martial law has been declared in Ooda. The Peace Brigade has said that this is only temporary, until the fortifications are complete and defences have been installed. At that time, governance of the city will be returned to the city council. They estimate it could be a year or more until they are finished.   While the town is under martial law, residents and visitors are forbidden from carrying weapons (especially firearms), and an 8 p.m. curfew is enforced. Instructions from Peace Brigade officers are to be followed as if law. Anyone breaking these rules is arrested. First offences generally only carry a fine (unless the offendor commits violent acts), but subsequent offences can result in imprisonment or expulsion from the town.

Benefits: At the moment, the benefits of an allegiance to Ooda are shifting. With the Peace Brigade running things temporarily, benefits are much the same as an allegiance to the Peace Brigade: access to a wide variety of trade goods, as well as shelter, and the promise of protection from outside threats.
