Giant Lazzar Species in Gamma World | World Anvil

Giant Lazzar

Giant lazzars are the larger cousins of lazzars, lizard creatures about the size of a housecat. Giant lazzars are frequently referred to as just lazzars, however, which can cause some confusion as to which kind people are referring to. This isn't a particularly egregious problem, though, as people don't talk about the smaller ones very often.

Basic Information

Dietary Needs and Habits

Giant lazzars are easy to care for. They don't need a lot of water, and while they do eat large quantities, they are not picky about what they eat. They seem to be able to get sustenance from just about any organic matter (though they are susceptible to poisons, mutagens, and radioactivity).

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Many people across Taebur keep giant lazzars as beasts of burden and riding animals. They are strong and dextrous, and ideally suited to the tasks, although they require special harnesses, saddles, and reins due to their much different shape from a standard horse.   Riding a giant lazzar can be a strange experience and takes a bit of getting used. Due to their body shape, the rider is much closer to the ground than with most other riding animals. This requires sitting with lower legs bent up behind the rider. This can be uncomfortable until a rider gets used to it. Because of this, riding a lazzar imparts a -2 penalty to Ride checks. Beyond this, lazzars make great riding animals. They are fast and agile, and climb over obstructions such as rocks or ruined buildings much more easily and adeptly than a camel or horse, even climbing over obstruction that other animals would have to go around.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Giant lazzars can be found just about anywhere in Taebur and the rest of the continent. They are one of the few creatures ideally suited to the environment, able to adapt quickly to the region's extremes. They are encountered in their largest numbers, however, along the Grand Canyon and Yellow River Canyon.
