Bastin Species in Gamma World | World Anvil

Bastin

People have long joked that cats are evil and secretly plot to take over the world. In the Gamma Age, this isn't just a joke. It's sometimes completely true.   Most cats in the Gamma Age are exactly what they appear to be: just cats. However, sometime just before or during the Final Wars, a mutated gene appeared that gave some cats human-level intelligence and psionic abilities. These cats have become known as Bastin, and they desire nothing less than the complete destruction of humanity as repayment for generations of what they consider cat enslavement.   Luckily, they are few in number and far from achieving their goals.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Bastin are born to normal cats. There seems to be no way to predict when this will happen. Although records indicate that a mutated gene is responsible, it's not clear what activates the gene, as it is not simply a case of dominant versus recessive. Two Bastin mating have no more chance of producing another Bastin than two non-Bastin mating.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Meat, preferably human, but they have to be careful about killing humans. It's easy to kill a single human, but humans in large numbers can easily overpower a Bastin. So they mostly subside on rats and other small rodents, as well as anything they can trick humans into giving them. They then patiently wait the opportunity to strike.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Bastin seek out others of their kind if they can, though this is often not possible due to the relative rarity of their births. When they do find others of their kind, they will usually work together to undermine the local humans. There's no guarantee that any two Bastin will get along, however, so they do sometimes end up at odds with each other or going their separate ways.   Rumours of entire communities of Bastin have never been verified and are unlikely to be true.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

All Bastin are psionic , though their exact psionic powers vary from one individual to the next. Most have only one or two basic powers, but a few live long enough to learn more and advance in power.
