Echloros System

System Overview: As far as The Celestial Reach is concerned, the Echloros system is the backwoods of Epiphany Sector, full of washed-up colonies and abandoned prospects. They once saw the opportunity for great things here, but were disappointed time and time again. Corvus-IV fought back against their attempts at colonization, Calyx turned out to be nothing more than a lifeless desert, and even Ourea's mines have been hemorrhaging money. But that means that all three planets have rich, independent cultures aligned against the empire, even if they are empty of the wealth, technology, and "freedom" that the Reach promises. Also water. It's empty of clean water. Which is, y'know, a problem.
Notable Locations:
  • The Taproom. A small truck stop between Corvus and Ourea, used as a rest stop before passing through Corvus' Screen. Known for their house-brewed liquor: "It's the cleanest drink in Echloros." Located on a moon of Olympia.
  • Olympia. A beautiful, swirling blue gas giant. Visible from some parts of Ourea. Spaceships can hide in the planet's atmosphere for ambushes, but the strong winds make this a risky maneuver.

Location: Ourea

Description: An official Reach-colonized ocean planet with rare strains of Baetylite in its solid core. The surface cities, including Lacrima, the capital, are connected by a satellite grid but have unique cultures, focusing on trade. In Lacrima, everyone has a hustle and the police are known for being especially lax. The cities under the irradiated ocean are mining towns with limited connection to the surface. The Baetylite mines are quickly running out, leaving the colonists scrambling to find more or risk being abandoned. Owned by The Beltane Group.
Scene:
A serene, dark ocean stretches to the horizon. A whoop and holler as a speedboat drives by, blasting Latin music. A space truck pulls into port, surrounded by faded signs, rusted metal streets, and vintage hovercars. Deep beneath the surface, a team in heavy diver suits operates mining machinery. A loud rumble rocks the drill and the workers look around in a panic.
Notables:
Castel Friday (they/them). Fixer and community leader in Lacrima. Runs a party-club called Merry Blue. (beloved, persuasive, easy-going)
Captain Set Cerulean (he/she/they). Newly promoted police captain of the Lacrima Triphibious Guard. Wants to crack down on smuggling and crime. (principled, self-starter, perceptive)
Alderin Kolk (he/him). Dissident leader of the underwater city of Umsel. Wants independence for Ourea. (resilient, impatient, soldier)

Location: Calyx

Description: A former Reach colony, forgotten and abandoned due to a far-away corporate takeover. The planet is mostly golden deserts and has very little natural water. The few habitable zones are dry, grassy hills near the poles. Colonists, left behind by their corporate sponsor, have had to fend for themselves, mainly breaking into two factions. The Calyx Commune has banded together to help each other as a small anarchist society. Others, calling themselves Homesteaders, venture out to arbitrarily claim vast swaths of land and live completely on their own.
Scene:
A single iron broadcast station stands in the sun, casting complex, crisscrossed shadows over golden hills. Sweat dripping down his brow, a homesteader toils endlessly at a handmade water-pump, searching for something to drink. In a town of ramshackle tents, a woman hands out small, rationed water packets to sick children.
Notables:
Bumblebee Moore (she/her). De facto leader of the Calyx Commune. A second-generation Calyxite who is deeply trusted by her community. (hospitable, attentive, reliable)
Dreamer (she/her). Once a corporate heiress from DemGar, she developed strange powers on Bliss and briefly became a spacefaring adventurer. Now, she is laying low on Calyx and often helps out the Commune. (empathic, conspicuous, heroic)
Iman Aubade (he/him). A Homesteader who found impressive success in his solitary life. He manufactures and sells cheap solar-powered electronics. (entrepreneur, proud, stringent)

Location: Corvus-IV

Description: One of four planets settled by refugees from Sagittarius Sector's Corvus-Prime after a nuclear war split the planet. Arriving in Epiphany well before the Celestial Reach, the refugees made one of the longest-standing civilizations in the sector. They are fiercely independent and isolationist, with an authoritarian, bureaucratic government to regulate their citizens and keep out outsiders. Corvus-IV is an archipelago planet with various small biomes and strange alien creatures. Their technology has advanced slower than that of The Reach, but they have made notable strides in the fields of medicine and life science. After just barely winning a war against The Celestial Reach to retain their independence, the planet's surface became scattered with debris and scrap, and much of the water has become impotable.
Scene: Children play among the wreckage of corroded mechs and spaceships. A serene beachfront with sickly yellow water; out-of-place red telephone booths stick up out of the sand, marking what were once city blocks. A bustling city of huge, brutalist concrete buildings and neoclassical government halls. A screen of solid light flickers on between distant satellites, both a protective shield and a prison cage.
Notables:
Reimann Buckshire (he/him) The beleaguered president of Corvus-IV, wrapped up in the deluge of bureaucracy and red tape. A figure with significant symbolic power, but not much political power. (inept, charismatic, unexceptional)
Dr. Celia Grey (she/they). Professor Emeritus at Bursar University. Corvus' leading expert on all things medicine, she's well-respected but not well-liked. (jaded, old-fashioned, inquisitive)
Phoebe Gilligan (she/her). A young engineer working in Sanctum and the Garagelands. She's an expert at unconventional solutions and Rube Goldberg-esque contraptions. (optimistic, prodigy, unorthodox)
