City-States of Cressia
Information
The Kingdom of Cressia, a rugged frontier nation, sits at the southern tip of the main continent of Gaiafel, bordered to the north by the Gulf of Saraya and stretching eastward to the Gobi Bolor Steppe. This isolated yet fiercely independent kingdom is surrounded by geographic and cultural barriers, fostering a unique culture shaped by resilience, independence, and a constant readiness for conflict.Location & Geography
Situated south of Serenvale, across the Gulf of Saraya, Cressia lies at the southern tip of Gaiafel’s main continent. The kingdom is bordered by the vast Gobi Bolor Steppe to the east, separated by the rugged Eastern Mountains, and faces the Southern Sea to the south, where the Scattered Isles and Isle of Snigeli host threats from barbarian tribes and giants. This position has earned Cressia a reputation as Gaiafel’s “frontier,” a land where natural and mortal dangers constantly press on its borders.City-States and Watchtowers
Triadic City-States: Cressia’s governance is divided among three major city-states: Marencia, Vondar’s Reach, and Thalora, each responsible for the upkeep of three watchtowers. The unique responsibilities of each city-state shape its cultural identity. These watchtowers line the coastline and extend into the mountains, manned year-round by The Watch, a trained force of men and women from all parts of Cressia. Each Cressian citizen is required to serve at least two years with The Watch, a duty prerequisite for voting rights, holding public office, or receiving government benefits. This compulsory service is deeply ingrained in Cressian society, instilling a strong sense of duty and unity among the populace.Culture and Honor Through The Watch
Cressians value honor, duty, and personal redemption, principles embodied in their unique justice system. Minor and moderate crimes can be atoned for through service in The Watch. Those convicted of severe crimes may be sentenced to serve their entire lives within the towers, a commitment most accept without defiance. Lifetime Watchmen are regarded with a solemn respect, symbolizing Cressian ideals of redemption and sacrifice, and very few ever attempt to escape this duty. Many view it as a path to personal atonement, where they may find meaning and respect despite their past deeds. The Watch is thus a strong brotherhood, with bonds formed in shared responsibility, making it a revered institution in Cressia.Culture of Readiness and Brotherhood
Life in Cressia is shaped by its constant exposure to external threats, cultivating a culture that values preparedness, cooperation, and a tough resilience. Young Cressians are raised with respect for the traditions of The Watch and often look forward to their years of service as a rite of passage. A sense of honor permeates daily life, as every citizen contributes to the kingdom’s safety and stability. This shared sense of duty strengthens the kingdom against threats from the Orcish tribes of the Gobi Bolor Steppe to the east, barbarian raiders from the Scattered Isles, and the looming presence of giants from the Isle of Snigeli.Orcish Relations and Amrakh
To the east, beyond the Eastern Mountains, are the Orcish tribes of the Gobi Bolor Steppe. These nomadic, horse-mounted warriors periodically raid Cressian settlements, yet they respect the sacred neutrality of Amrakh, the steppe’s only city. In Amrakh, Orcish clans gather to trade peacefully without the threat of violence. It is a grave offense to shed blood within its walls, especially with bladed weapons, and any Orc or visitor found guilty faces severe consequences. The respect for Amrakh’s neutrality extends beyond the Orcish tribes to those few Cressian traders who journey there, understanding that the city represents an unspoken truce amidst an otherwise adversarial relationship.Interesting Facts
Horse Culture: Like their Orcish neighbors, Cressians also prize horses and have a strong riding tradition. The kingdom’s proximity to the steppe has influenced their breeding of hardy, swift steeds suited for defense and patrolling. The Scattered Isles: The Southern Sea hosts numerous islands, some of which belong to the Scattered Isles, known for their dangerous barbarian tribes. Few Cressians venture here except skilled sailors and adventurers seeking knowledge or resources. Gulf of Saraya: Cressia’s location across this gulf from Serenvale provides a buffer and natural boundary, connecting the two regions for trade but also serving as a line of defense against seafaring threats.
