Titan's Bridge

What secrets lie unearthed beneath its stones?
A wondrous realm or long forgotten bones?
The hands that laid the bridge upon its base,
They hid the truth far from the human race.
— An excerpt from Procopios' Poems

The largest and oldest of the seventeen bridges connecting the various islands that make up the Elevated City, the aptly-named Titan's Bridge, links the northern bank of the Arsanias river with the Lane of the Ancients that runs between the perioches of Boneminster and Shallowton. The megalithic and moss-covered structure consists of two massive standing stones with a third resting atop the other two and shows signs of having been tooled and put in place by large beings some time ago, long before the first colonists from Lapara visited the area.

Purpose / Function

Whatever the intent of the structure's builders may have had in mind when placing three stones between the river bank and a delta island, the humans who have come to call the area home have used it as a bridge since they first scaled it. The size and traffic present on the bridge during they day have made it a natural, if inconvenient, place for a market to emerge.

Alterations

Few alterations have been made to the bridge as the city has developed around it. Firstly, a series of stairs have been carved into it on either sides of the water to provide access to the bridge for beings much smaller than its original creators. Balustrades of wood have been erected on either side of the bridge to prevent accidents in which those crossing fall into the water below. Additionally, exposed areas of the bridge have seen centuries of graffiti, whether through carving or painting, and attempts to cover it up have resulted in large areas of stone having been whitewashed with the same plaster used throughout many other parts of the city.

The Elevated City

The Titan's Bridge is the only way to enter the city of Metilene from the north. Metilene, known as the Elevated City on account of its high flood walls and densely packed structures that pile on top of each other, serves as the capital of Achenae.
