Shell Men

The armored Shell Men of Drumlind have had a curious history in their interactions with members of other species, namely in that those interactions have never once ended in bloodshed. Many attribute this to the famed, seemingly endless patience of these chitinous, crab shelled humanoids, and for once, a public opinion carried by the zeitgeist is synonymous with the truth. Shell Men aptly named, as their species has no female, have independently evolved and grown to achieve sentience only on the island of Drumlind, roughly 60 miles square, 140 nautical miles from the dwarven capital of Tarlock, and had been unable to spread their species to other islands due to the lack of resources at home, which is in turn due to the never ending hurricane that has plagued the island since nearly the dawn of time. This species has, as a result, had to spend the entirety of its time in consciousness hunkering down and waiting for the storm to pass, named simply 'The Wind' by the unimaginative Shell Men, making them ideal partners for trade.   One could be forgiven for believing that the Shell men wouldn't have anything of value to trade with, particularly given that this very article claims they have no resources. In fact, all of the resources owned by the Shell Men come from the sea, and in their short time on this plane, they have become absolutely peerless when it comes to aquaculture. Though lacking the dexterity to commit to pursuits such as needlework, Shell Men pincers have proven to be ideally suited to weaving fishing nets from kelp, which are later enchanted by Shell Men Shaman to deceive fish into feeling safe while they are within it's leaves. Fishermen from around the Kytaran Sea seek out these Kelp Nets, typically to be used only in emergency situations, as the enchanted seaweed will not rot until the net has been used to catch at least 70 fish, as 70 is a holy number to the Shell Men. This may lead one to believe that this net can be used for quite some time, but the truth of the matter is that the enchantment present also actively attracts fish towards it, leading a starving victim of shipwreck inundated with free fish within minutes of dipping the net into the sea.   The Shell Men have not yet developed the need for currency, but they do trade these nets, as well as fish, by utilizing the barter system. The legendary patience of a Shell Man means that a trader trying to undersell one of their number will have their work cut out for them, as a Shell Man will never part with his wares for anything less than he believes it is worth. On the other hand, it is largely a matter of trial and error for one seeking to find out where a Shell Man sees worth. While it is difficult to tell if such stories are genuine, there has been many a pirate crew who have claimed to have received as many as 15 nets for trading items such as water skins, fire pokers, single livestock animals or even a sundial. The Shell Men are a race of humanoids with habits and tastes so dissimilar to even the most alien of the humanoid races, that scholars throughout the known world agree than further study of their culture is a necessity.
