Acredian

The Empire that has sprouted from the ashes of the Nightmare War* like mushrooms on a corpse considers itself synonymous with humanity, even though they are well aware of other humans living in the world. The Acredian Empire of Humans has this unnecessary suffix, and this attitude towards their fellow man, as a definite statement that non humans are not only not welcome, but are the enemy. Acredian society can almost be said to be defined more by it's prejudices and xenophobia than it can by any of it's other attributes, because unlike the M'bani, who are just a naturally boastful people, the Acredians believe they, meaning humans who follow Men Mori, are the only people who were supposed to survive the Nightmare War. They believe their god, The Great Ashen God, has been left at the point of near death after his creation of this new world, and that the only thing that can bring him back to his former glory is a steady supply of blood and souls.   The Greater Evil   Thanks to early accounts of the days surrounding the Empire's founding, accounts which are considered heresy by the church of Men Mori, we know that it was not this Great Ashen God who gave the first legion of Acredians the knowledge they'd needed to survive, it was Asmodeus, the King of the Nine Hells. At some point during the horrors of the Nightmare War, it be came commonplace for humans to stop worshipping Gods, as most of them had proven incapable or unwilling to offer aid. Some turned to Archfey, some turned to god-like aberrations like N'yoethd'h the Endless Maw, but the new pantheon that seemed most willing to participate in a war was that of devils. Humans were well aware that they were worshipping the forces of evil, as they had reasoned that these forces were most likely to grant the power necessary to turn the tide. Asmodeus himself is credited with the first actual tipping point for humans, and by extension the formation of the Acredian empire, as it was he who first whispered his commands to Arwienn, the paladin squire who first inspired the Acredians to worship the power of death. Over the years following the Nightmare War, the Church of Men Mori distanced themselves from the influence of devils, and instead constructed the myth of their new god, as the Great Ashen God provided a much more accessible excuse as to why Acredian history and culture is only marginally less horrific than the war that spawned it.   Total Domination   The pursuit of selling a brand new religion is a very delicate process, and Men Mori clerics had been keeping careful notes on the worship practices of humans throughout the many iterations of faith in past years. One trick they had picked up fairly quickly is that it is difficult to convince a population that they are both god's chosen people, and that they were now needed to build a civilization from the ground up. A scapegoat was needed, and the budding oligarchy turned it's attention to a race that had been nearly completely eradicated at this point: the dwarves. Dwarves and humans had started the Nightmare War as allies, facing off against the endless hordes of orcs side by side. Once the orcs had receded to the perceived safety of the Underdark, dwarves and humans went their separate ways, and didn't have any contact with one another for quite some time. After the formation of the first Acredian Legions, the humans turned their aggression towards their allies of yore, who had not fared as well in the battles fought during the intervening time. Humans eventually captured or killed every dwarf living on the continent of Ikar, and forced them into a slavery that would last nearly 700 years, until their eventual liberation at the hands of Morwr Strongarm, and the Dwarven Salvation. The Acredian explanation for the fact that their entire workforce had disappeared overnight was simply to release a new set of scripture that claimed that the Great Ashen God had regained enough strength to begin punishing mortals, but only enough so far to eradicate his most despised creations.   Glory to Acredia Acredian attitudes towards the dwarves did not stem from hatred towards the dwarves themselves, but from an overarching attitude of Acredian supremacy above all others. Most other sentient races on Ikar have either left for the safety of another plane, or are few enough not to warrant any further actions on the imperial level, though bands of Men Mori Inquisitors will still attempt to kill any they find on sight. Humans outside the Empire are reasoned to have renounced their humanity in favor of fraternizing with what the Church of Men Mori calls the "Lesser Races", otherwise those humans would have been born within the Empire's borders. It is far more pressing for the Acredian Senate to instill it's citizenry with just a sense of racial pride through propaganda, doctrine and control, rather than actually putting forth any effort to prove it by acknowledging any other demographic, likely owing to the fact that Acredian society simply wouldn't hold up as a superior people when compared with other, less brutal societies. The Acredian economy, for example, forgoes the use of any form of coinage or gemstones, as used by the M'bani in the Kytaran Sea, in favor of small sheets of gold foil, with a needlessly complicated, while somehow simultaneously lax system of minting. The gold itself, as a raw material, is what holds the value, but no Acredian merchant will except the gold unless it has been engraved with the Imperial Banner, which any person is allowed to add themselves. This means it is entirely possible for someone to discover a vein of gold ore ore even melt down gold salvage, and literally print their own money at home.   Fuel for the Kiln Acredians are no longer capable of feeling any sort of empathy or sympathy for non-Acredians, of this, there is no argument. Even being born to a noble family in the heart of the Empire is not enough to guarantee safety from the ever present threat of being indictment by the Men Mori Inquisition. The Great Ashen God requires such a massive tribute of blood and power, the Mors Omnia, or Acredian Emperor, levies the death penalty for offences as large as treason, masked as heresy, or as small as failing to meet productivity quotas in the workforce, now that the dwarves have all vanished. The days when the high councils and ancient powers of the world would gather in secret to the sound of whispers that humanity would inherit the world have long since faded to memory. This final damning example for the depths of human cruelty has removed to possibility from anyone's minds that humanity could, or ever would bring peace to Gadria.
