Dragons

Few things have shaken the world as much as the Emergence of Don'vur and together with it, the appearance of dragons. Greedy and arrogant by nature, dragons are extremely powerful draconic creatures, that despite their monstrous appearance are a societal species, similar to humans or elves.

Physical traits, personality and abilities

General

Dragons are large creatures with varying features that can be categorized into five distinct groups, each associated with a color and, with one exception, an elemental core: black, blue, green, red and white. Dragons generally live up to 3000 cycles and only gain strength as they age. Due to this, elder dragons are considered more powerful than their younger kindred.   All dragons are able to use one or multiple forms of powerful magic, including the ability to polymorph into humans or any creature they studied for a sufficient amount of time. While they are physically incredibly strong and durable, it is possible to slay a dragon in a fight or kill them through other means.   While dragons can have very diverse personalities, all of them are characterized by one central trait: their greed. Whether it’s greed for material things like jewelry or greed for immaterial things like power, dragons enjoy splendor, opulence and abundance in all its forms. Dragons want control over their desired form of possession and will do anything to attain it.

Black dragons

Black dragons are dragons with black scales that have a slight shine to them, similar to polished obsidian. They have burly bodies, four clawed feet and two large leathery wings, allowing them to fly. Their diamond shaped heads with a long snout raise above their body on a long neck and have two eyes that are even darker than their scales. They have two long, thick tails, each ending on a club-like protrusion with spikes.

Blue dragons

Blue dragons have blue and aquamarine, fish-like scales that are soft to the touch, despite being incredibly tough. They have long bodies similar to that of a snake and four very small legs. Their heads and snouts are slightly angled from the rest of their body and have long, whisker-like barbels on each side. On their long spine and at the end of their body-tail, they have fins with shimmering blue and purple tones.

Green dragons

Green dragons have shining emrald green scales that almost look like glass. They are quadrupedal and have wings like their black counterparts, while having a long, slender body more similar to their blue kindred. Green dragons have a triangular shaped head with two long flowing lints of leathery skin opposing a pointed snout. Their tail ends in a single sharp point that can pierce even the strongest armour.

Red dragons

Red dragons have ruby prismatic scales that surround them with a red aura of light. They are built similar to black dragons, albeit less burly and with a slightly longer neck. The shape of their heads resemble that of green dragons, but with two small wing-like protrusions on the side of their heads an a slightly broader snout. A red dragon’s tail is exceptionally long and powerful, allowing it to destroy building in one single sweep.

White dragons

White dragons are dragons with white, semi-translucent scales that have a feathery look to them. Their bodies are long like that of blue dragons, but their legs and claws are slightly larger, allowing them to walk on land more easily. Their heads are similar to those of blue dragons, but without the whiskers. Their long bodies end on a wide feathery silver tail resembling that of a pheasant.

Draconic conquest

A dragon’s societal nature is most clearly shown by their desire to shape, conquer and/ or rule a society to their liking. In a somewhat arrogant fashion, dragons assume it’s their birthright to own their desires and to control the world as such. Consequently, dragons are tyrannical beings that see humans either as a nuisance or as a means to an end. While some dragons prefer to keep their distance from humans or other dragons, most dragons enjoy living alongside humans, especially as their rulers, leaders and, in some cases, owners. It is thus no surprise that dragons tried and partly succeeded in taking over human societies after they appeared in the Emergence of Don’vur.   Naturally, humans fought back against their new draconic enemies. Many local territories made alliances to fight off the dragons. The Triar of Sébar is an example of such an alliance that successfully defended their continent from dragons.   Other territories were more easily claimed due to their divided nature. Tartos easily fell to the dragons due to their fractured societies that were not as accustomed to warfare as other areas in the world. Parts of Fhyrir were also conquered due to this, but later fought back in what is now called the Millennium War on dragons.

Draconic societies

In areas that where conquered by the dragons, draconic cultural elements were introduced into the local societies, resulting in draconic societies that are a combination of local traditions and new aspects introduced by dragons.   Dragons are tyrannical leaders that rule with an iron fist. While some dragons resort to cruelty and fear, others have a more lawful approach to societal leadership. Albeit rules generally favor dragons and dragonkin, some areas are more ‘fair’ to their human population than others.

Dragonslayers

Due to a dragon’s contiguous strength, slaying a dragon is a feat of heroes. Fighters accomplishing such a task are called ‘dragonslayer’ and are praise as heroes in all but the draconic world. Legends say that the first person killing a dragon was King Astes Vonderdijk, King of Dal’im and later the Kingdom of Eandal. This has earned him the title ‘First Dragonslayer’.
