When the first settlers arrived in the New World from Italia, they brought with them a pickled salad made from olives, peppers, carrots, and a whole mess of other delicious things. It became a big hit in the towns along the coast, with nearly every household having a jar or two in their cellars. Not only that, it was a prize among Gastrologers for all the different flavors that could co-exist together in a single dish. Too bad that range of flavors also made it a prime target for whatever diabolical forces created the Gasts in the first place.

Muttfallettas are the size of big working dogs, made up of thousands of diced pieces of different vegetables and herbs. They'll plow their way through any obstacle, relying on brute force over stealth any day of the week. Fortunately that's also one of their weaknesses; with such small components, their stoutness suffers and they'll break apart with a good whack from a shovel, nevermind the salt bullets.

Being made up of so many things also makes them better scavengers. They can find something in nearly every garden patch or kitchen pantry to absorb into themselves, helping them survive much farther afield than most Gasts, which need very specific foods to build up their forms. 

Name explanation

Muffuletta (or muffaletta) is the name of a type of sandwich bread, a spread made of olives, peppers, and other ingredients, and also a sandwich made from those two ingredients and others. Mutt is a slightly derogatory term for a dog with mixed parentage.
