Troglodytes are vile forest-dwelling creatures, smart enough to use tools and cook food with fire, but not advanced enough to be able to communicate verbally. They're driven by their instinct, the foremost of which is the urge for neverending gluttony. They live in forests near populated areas and eat forest animals, mostly, but if they get their paws on a human, they would eat them too.

Vicissitudes of Time, Episode 3 spoilers

A trio of troglodytes procured a chainsaw some time before March 1429. It got there after a time traveler from XXI century decided to circumvent his inability to receive a lumbering permit in France. For some time he has been traveling between the Loire stone and the closest forest with a cart, a backpack and a chainsaw, cutting down trees, taking them back to the present with him and selling it there. This business enterprise ended in a tragedy: he was ambushed by a group of Troglodytes, got killed and eaten, and his chainsaw became one of their tools. In early March 1429 they were hunted down by The Bureau of Temporal Investigations, and the anachronism was corrected.
