Nobody wants to live here. but due to some drama across the island, nobody is able to leave. There has only ever been one devil fruit to grow here, called the spring spring fruit. It is one of the worst fruit to have due to all the debuffs you could get and how difficult it is to control it. Which is the reason why no one wants to be on this island. But because of some insults across some familys about who could control the fruit the best with their next heir, everybody is stuck. The families not involved have been threatened with death if they left before this resolved.
