Al-Shamal is rich with oil, which is one of the reasons why Kholodno Federation and Qadena Governorate are at odds with each other. The two powers attempted to take the desert for this material.
After years of conflict, the Kal-Sou Border is established with 2/3 of the desert belongs to Qadena.

Everyday use
Oil is used to power up machinery.
Qadena is home to steam machinery. It was for this reason that the usage of oil is crucial for the city and how hard they fought with Kholodno to gain the 2/3 of the desert. Although the usage of steam machinery is mostly available to those in the Industrial District, places like the cantina uses simple machinery for brewing drinks require oil for them to work, albeit only a small amount.

Storage
Many types of container were used to store the oil. In the beginning, animal hides were used to collect and store the oil. However, it ended up "cooking" the oil which caused it to be useless.
The Qadani then used barrels and kept inside a storage facility which was located in the palace. But the location of the storage was deep underground where the temperature is extremely low, causing the oil to be hardened. Though the oil still can be used, the process to liquify it takes too long.
When Qadena began trading with Adescheid, they receive metal which are processed into metal barrels. The storage facility is built above ground but with cooling technology that provides optimum temperature to ensure longevity of the oil.
