Gilfrost Settlement in Fortis | World Anvil

Gilfrost

On the edge of the Northern Expanse lies a mountain stronghold reknown for it's mines and forges. They export not only the finished products of their masterful smiths, but also the finest metals in Fortis. Goods are stockpiled in massive warehouses for most of the year, since the forbidding climate prevents trade during all but the warmest months.   It is said that the gods themselves carry weapons and armor from the legendary smiths of ancient Gilfrost. Although some techniques have been lost to the ages, new ones have been developed and the equipment they produce is unparalleled in both strength and craftsmanship. The Nard excel the smiths of Gilfrost only in the miraculous lightness of their pieces and that is mostly due to the ubiquity of magic in their industrial processes. Yet even the Nard source their metals from Gilfrost's mines, and the two cities have a friendly rivalry when it comes to creating exquisite jewelry.   Many say that the reason Valtarus has no massive buildings or elaborate monuments is because they spend all their coin at Gilfrost. This may not be as farfetched as it sounds, given the cost of Gilfrost's wares and the number of shipments leaving with merchants bound for the Valta Mountains. Indeed, the average Valtaran's sword fetches a higher price than their home would.

Industry & Trade

An extensive system of tunnels crisscross the land beneath the city of Gilfrost. The upper sections of them, mined long ago, function as the city proper, complete with taverns, shops, inns, and other municipal buildings. Underground, the citizens are far warmer and better protected from the frozen winds above. The next level down is the living quarters, and below that are the mines themselves, which extend throughout the mountain range.   The surface level of the city is primarily reserved for industry and warehouses, although there is the occasion tavern or odd shop to supply those laboring above. During working hours, the heat of the refineries and forges is somewhat retained within the city walls so it's safe to walk around in normal winter wear. Once the day's work is done and night falls, however, one risks frostbite or death without expensive magical precautions. More than one unprepared merchant has met his end simply trying to get to his inn from a late night out at a surface tavern.
