Thunder Legion
The Thunder Legion- Its name is a purposeful deception as the Thunder legion was not a standard legion in size. The Legion consists of approximately 30,000 dwarves, similar to that of a normal army and was filled with Dwarves using experimental weapons. Gained through secretive measures these weapons varied in size and deadliness. Teh Dwarves consisted of member from many such as the Engineers, Artificers, and Forgers guilds that were seen as to innovative or in breaking with tradition. The High King created a Military branch for these brave dawi to have aplace to call home, experiment, innovate and create weapons of war for the Khazad. Some of these dawi will participate in battle, but much of the armies ranks are filled with volunteers who seek to use these weapons to improve and honor the Khazad.
The most common weapon in the Legion is what we might call a rife, known to the troops as Firebolts. The design was improved by the Engineers and Artificers of the Khazad, using runic magic, these weapons have been made to fire without loading or need for ammunition. The Rifles also are enchanted so that only a dwarf may use them, runic magic to reinforce, improve aim and switch ammunition types exist on the weapon and can be adjusted by the user as necessary. In addition to magical improvements, the rifles have rifling, improved stocks, and sights. The Weapons can be used in short and Long-range combat with a varying firing rate averaging 10-20 rounds per minute. Modified versions used in different companies could increase range, fire rate, accuracy, and even sound with the most notorious being comparable to that of a whisper.
The next notorious weapon was the Volleier, similar improvements to the Firebolts allowed great variety, but overall the Volleier had an increased rate of fire, with the average being 500-600 rounds per minute. These weapons however required the use of 2-4 dwarves to use. The constant rate of fire these teams could achieve became a legend amongst the legion. A large number of dwarves was necessary as one dwarf would fire, one would maintain the temperature of the weapon to avoid overheating, one often was used to adjust the aim, and another to aid in esnuring the weapon was constanly loaded/refiled with ammunition. These position could be multitaksed between two people if necessary but max efficiency was often under the use of 4 dwarves. These Weapon/volley teams are most effective as all ranges and very effective against large groups of enemies.
The Last and most important weapon available to the Legion are the Thunderers, What we might call artillery, these weapons were modified cannons, made to fire larger and deadlier ammuntion further than many thought possible. The Increased size and crew allows for greater variety in the weapons capabilites. As magic enhanced ammunition can be summoned and fired from the weapon. Most common variants include pure metal rounds, explosive, freezing/cold, screamers, poison, Holy, and shrapnel. Occasionally extremely deadly rounds, will be manuely loaded into the weapons which would often include multiple effects that would increase lethality, and the area of effect. the Favorite for disposing of large chunks of enemeies was the Dragon ex: one third of its way though its arc the round would begin emmiting a roar, where upon reaching the 2/3 mark, the round would explode into hundreds of pieces of shrapnel (all points downwards into the arc of the weapon), each enchanted to cast fireball upon impact with the ground and then also cast wall of fire on the location afterwards.
The Thunderers became the namesake of the Legion and the force as a whole, representing the possibility and use of runic magic in warfare. Despite its capacity for destruction the Legion remains the lnly dwarven military unit to use such weaponry, due to concerns by traditionalist over the unproven aspects of the weapons, but the high Kings support allows the unit to exist, support the military and continue further innovations.
