Legion (Lee-jn)

The Legions of the Forgotten realms are military units of the Khazad. Created first in the time of woe, they underwent massive reform in the 12th century Dr under the guidance of Durin the Eighth prior to his coronation. His reforms had the legion focus on quality, discipline, and battle tactics. His reforms also ensured the army's ability to travel long distances, and have supplies when not engaged in combat. In total the Average Legion consisted of approximately 6,000 troops and was fully self-sustainable in any setting. First and foremost the Legion was divided into Regiments each headed by a Major and his support staff, which would normally include a wizard and cleric to support his efforts. The Regiments were subdivided into companies and then tents. which captains and Sergeants would watch and command their troops. Importantly each Tent was integrated as a unit of 10 including the cleric, which would use their magic to supply the unit with Food and Water for a full day. From that point each day the cleric would summon more food and water. This ability made the Legion able to feed and supply itself in hash and inhospitable locations. Combined with cleric healing and proper hygiene the Legion became a Mobile force capable of attacking deep into enemy territory, easily divided for replacement and substitution. This combined with the further division into Regiments and Battalions allowed the Legion to serve as a police effort in regions when necessary was each Major would be given command and orders to act on their own when not directly commanded by their Colonel. In total, the Khazadit possessed enough men to have 5 legions and create an Army. While this was a great feat many dwarves were considered auxiliaries in the Khazadit and were technically a part of a legion, so on average, the Khazadit had 2 active legions. One was used for defensive purposes, while the other could be sent on offensive campaigns if necessary.   Legion Sub Divisions:   Name = sub branch = troop count - Rank of Commander = Equivilant in modern Military:   1 legion = 5 Regiments = 6,000 troops - Marshall = Colonel   1 Regiment = 2 Battalions = 1,200 troops - General = Lieutenant Colonel   1 Battalion = 3 companies = 600 troops - Centurion= Major   1 company = 5 platoons = 200 troops - Captain = Captain   1 platoon = 5 tents or 4 tents 2 wiz = 40 troops - Lieutenant = First Lieutentant   1 tent = 6 legion,1 cleric, 1 sergeant = 8 troops - Sergeant = Staff Sergeant   1 wiz = 3 warmages = 4 troops - High Mage   The Average Composition of a soldier includes their armor (ranging from Dwarven plate for veterans to Splint armor for less experienced or less wealthy soldiers), a Shield, A Halberd with ranged effect, 3-5 javelins, A short sword, One personal weapon of choice, Tent (tools and supplies to repair and raise it), set of common clothes, personal coin purse, insignia of Rank, and personal items. It is designed as such so that the soldier can carry these items while on the march and be able to be efficient and capable in combat.   Outside of these items, one might include tools and supplies such as smithing, woodcarver, or other tools for general maintenance or for engineering projects of war. As one increases in rank, they might have additional supplies, but also will not need to carry them directly as their aides or support staff might carry it for them. Other than that often the Legion's supply of material goods would be supplemented by their ability to sell goods and food if needed for surface and long-term travel, however, this was no guarantee as seen in the Cleansing of the Deep. When engaged in the traditional battle the Legion will split into respective battalions for easier command and maneuvering. The troops shall first use their halberds to attack and keep the enemy at bay to the front. Should the enemy close ranks and the halberds prove inefficient the legionary should then equip their short sword to be able to defend themself and attack while protected by a shield. Should this line of attack then falter and an open brawl take place across the line, the soldier is then instructed to take out their personal weapon of choice to defend themselves. it is recommended that this weapon be one-handed but is not mandated. This is done so that should the battlefield clear and the line able to reform, they can and should reform, this requiring the shield to proficiently reform. While the enemy is engaged the rear soldier should make use of their javelins to damage the enemy lines and discourage approaching troops, hinder retreats, and harass the enemy. With this order of battle, the Dwarven legion proves a capable foe in traditional and untraditional battles. The most important aspect however is the capability of its commanders to hold the line of its troops, so as to remove any sense of dread and defeat from their brothers and to act intelligently in the heat of battle. The clear communication and command structure allows for commands to quickly and efficiently be relayed and allow for intense scrutiny of weakness in the enemy lines while preventing blunderbuss advances from happening due to delay in communication.   It was all of these that proved invaluable in the Deep Dark, where the winding tunnels and massive beats and armies that were faced were quickly and effectively dealt with so that should any unit need help they could and did receive assistance due to these many aspects. End
Locations of the Legions and their numbers   Khazadit- 5 active legions and 3 in reserve. The Legions are divided into groups with one defending each Wall at either end of the pass and the three Reserve legions combined with one to maintain internal stability. The Two remaining Legions could be used for offensive actions and to maintain watch of the Underdark if necessary. The Mountains around the kingdom where protected by the Khuzba  Legions:     Khazadkar- the Khazadkar kept a standing army of 50 legions with 30 Reserve Legions. In combination with these more generic Legions the Khazad also employed the First 10 Legions in reserved action, (often retired individuals who are willing to join up again), who retain a large degree of experience and high morale. There are also the Khuzba Legions, though they make up more of a Border security organization than true ready legions, they could be called upon in smaller groups or as a full Legion to perform Special Actions. They number around 10 divisions, with their true numbers being difficult to obtain. The 30 Reserved Legions were given the task of watching and maintaining internal security and stability within the Khazadkar, watching roads, important checkpoints, and cities. The Roughly 10 Khuzba Legions monitored the Wilderness and Borders with 1 being available for any internal monsters or other things that show up. 40 of the Main Legions are deployed to each Cardinals Direction and spread out amongst relevant Holds to ensure stability and protection in the Far-Flung parts. 10 Legions are dispatched as part of expansionary efforts such as digging new holds, expanding the Rail network, and helping new settlers.      Foreign Legion- 10 legions were organized into Expiditionary groups and could be hired across the Wrold by Dwarves for their services and deployed quickly on the High Kings Orders. These legions are often seen across the World helping Dwarves and serving as mercenaries to outsiders. For Secrecy purposes, no Outside recruitment is allowed and these Dwavres are chosen from the ranks to serve their species in efforts to protect and secure dwarves and their place in the world. For this reason, the Legions take the appearance of a Collective Mercenary Group that focuses on protecting dwarves and the wishes of the High King as needed.    Ex: The Sixth Legion is being deployed to Mirabar in the wake of the Luskan Incident to secure the city and allow dwarven influence to more easily expand into the Spine of the World, allowing the Khazadit to connect with the Silver Marches. Hopefully Annexing them into the domain and unifying the North under Dwarven rule.

Support Staff
Often for each commanding officer at different levels, each would have a personal wizard and cleric on hand to assist in communication, supply, and healing when needed. Besides these two critical roles each commander was allowed 1-2 additional staff to support them with an additional member being added each time one increased their rank and command. In this way the commanding officer could assign and designate when needed and receive proper status and assistance according to rank. Often the Colonel of a Legion would be seen with a large staff of 7 - 10 assistant, with the cleric and wizard being apart of that statistic. A major would often have 5-8 staff, to support the Battalions efforts and handle work such as keeping troops in order, being knowledgeable and doing paper work if necessary. Often many officers in training would be put as assistants to Majors and captains for battle experience and seeing how to command troops during combat. A captain would have 3-7 staff, to support in commanding his company with he wizard to receive communications, and send confirmation and update the commanding officer of their status and if necessary their retreat or defeat. A sergeant would be seen with 2-3 staff as he did not require a wizard and would have a personal cleric to tend to him and his staff.
