Neverwinter Stories: Heirs of Delzoun — Session 6

The Forge of Fury – Chapter Six: Bloodytooth Prisonbreak

General Summary

Without hesitation, all but Baldir descended the chimney while the paladin scouted for other entrances. The heirs entered a series of unpopulated, furnished caverns—a kitchen, larder, storage. Most apparent of them was a prison cell. Its rough-hewn saplings for bars held two humans (Geradil and Courana) and a duergar, Belnyss Deepreach. In exchange for her freedom and "killing all the orcs," Belnyss gave them information about the Bloodytooth Clan.
Orcs in the next room overheard them breaching the cell, so they set up an ambush and sent for reinforcements. Their attempt was good, but the Heirs were better. Orcish casualties mounted quickly once the combat started, so they were forced to flee across a rope bridge spanning a fissure. A few warriors managed to escape before they cut the bridge, stranding the dwarves on the other side.
The battle was won, but the victory was short-lived. With no way forward, the Heirs of Delzoun returned to discover the Old Yarrack flanked them in the melee and recaptured the humans. With the dwarves cornered and holding hostages, Yarrack attempted to force their surrender. But knowing they'll be executing regardless, they feigned submission, slammed a burning barricade between them, and made a break for the exit. The orcs pursued, but the Heirs bought just enough time with barred doors and hasty traps to cross the fissure with an improvised tightrope. Then they ran into Baldir, who beckoned them into a hidden, partially collapsed passage. Unquestioningly they follow, finally escaping by the skin of their teeth.

The heirs received much gratitude from the human couple Geradil and Courana. After they were recaptured, our heroes bargained with and then fought Old Yarrack again.

Notes

  • When exploring the caverns, the dwarves spotted brickwork. Orreft was able to determine that some of the bricks must have been made during Delzoun's time.
  • Belnyss also shot the rope bridge, attempting to get the orcs to fall. Unfortunately, this inadvertently contributed to them getting cornered.
  • Originally the plan was the leave the humans behind while finding an exit for them.
  • As part of their deception to escape Yarrack, Belnyss pretended to betray the Heirs. They, however, were not fully privy to that at first.
