Neverwinter Stories: Heirs of Delzoun — Session 2

The Forge of Fury – Chapter Two: Tomb of the Dwarven King

General Summary

Once they recovered from the gas, the adventurers continued to explore the tomb, eventually stumbling upon a chapel of Dumathoin and a fountain dedicated to Sharindlar. Then, after slaying an ooze in the chapel and temporarily restoring the fountain, the Heirs excavated a collapsed hallway. Within they found Gundren Rockseeker unconscious, forehead bloodied, at the foot of a giant door.
Imbim rushed to heal him, and she watched over him while he recovered. Once he came to, Gundren explained what he suspected was beyond the door: the king's tomb. The door was sturdy, seemed to be enchanted, and it had a riddle: To enter, produce the visage of a king with a head and a tail but no body. Helga solved it by presenting a coin to the door. With a click, it magically unlocked, and the adventurers entered.
The crypt beyond burst with a hoard of treasure and historical records. While going through the annals of Haunghdannar, the sarcophagus in the middle of the room flew open, and the body of King Baern Ungart III rose to defend his tomb. However, Orreft surprisingly managed to briefly convince the mad king to stay his hand in exchange for wealth. In that window, they learned more about King Ungart's lost kingdom and what he knew about the location of Gauntlgrym. The king marked the nearest stronghold he knew on their map: Stone Tooth Mountain, in the Spine of the World.
Unfortunately, the king's madness prevailed after Baldir was unable to offer more wealth. The Heirs were forced to defend themselves from the undead. However, their defense quickly turned into offense as they overran the king. After slaying him, the enchantment that preserved his crypt dissipated. The walls began to age centuries in seconds, then crack and crumble. Grabbing what they could, the dwarves made a mad dash for the exit. All but Baldir managed to escape the collapse; the paladin fell into a rift. Orreft dove back into crumbling ruins, shouting, "No dwarf left behind!" With the support of Imbim's magic, he grabbed Baldir and lept back to safety—defying death.

Rewards Granted

From the Dumathoin chapel, the Heirs found three peridots (50 gp each). The fountain yielded three flasks of holy water.
They managed to haul vast riches from the king's tomb: 351 gold pieces worth in coinage, art objects, and gems, a chest filled with treasure (1,500 gp), valuable historical records (500 gp), and a quarter-scale gold statue of the king (4,000 gp). The gross sum of these riches was 6,351 gold pieces, not including the peridots.
With such a valuable historical discovery, those with a knowledge or wealth destiny were inspired. As did Orreft, whose selfless bravery was second to none.
For escaping the tomb of the Dwarven king alive with a lead on the location of Gauntlgrym, the adventurers obtained a new level.

Missions/Quests Completed

The adventurers rescued Gundren, then cooperated with him to obtain a lost history

Character(s) interacted with

After rescuing Gundren Rockseeker and learning about his discoveries, the adventurers opened Baern Ungart III's tomb. Surprisingly, they managed to speak with the undead husk of the king before coming to blows.

Notes

  • The Sharindlar fountain dried up mere moments after being reactivated. So they used Tordek's helmet and Orreft's mug as their quickest on-hand containers.
  • After excavating the caved-in tunnel, Gundren showed the Heirs a secret door that hid an uncollapsed corridor to the same destination.
  • Baern Ungart referred to Delzoun as a "new" kingdom. This meant his reign would have been sometime between −3900 DR and −3350 DR. He also made disdainful comments about the gnomish clans in the mountains above, although their records weren't useful in further dating Baern's life.
  • As he did with the bodies before, Orreft returned the king's remains to his sarcophagus. However, he took Baern's hammer to fulfill his "dying" wish.
