Neverwinter Stories: Heirs of Delzoun — Session 1

The Forge of Fury – Chapter One: Tharden's Request

General Summary

In 1466 DR, Year of the Mages in Amber, the Rockseeker brothers located an ancient dwarvish settlement long buried in the foothills of the Sword Mountains. Their excavations of the ruins lead to the discovery of a dangerous crypt. Knowing they were outmatched, Tharden Rockseeker requested the help of the Heirs of Delzoun in exchange for treasure and information found within.
Baldir Fatechisel, Catriona Purevain, Helga Brightblade, Imbim Folkor, Orreft Mountwatch, and Torderk Brawnanvil answered the call. They met with Tharden in the village of Grimhollow, agreed to his terms, and set out for the excavation sight. When they arrived, the Heirs started investigating the whereabouts of the other dwarves: they found their camp, their notes on the Phandelver region, and the recently excavated ruins. From what they saw, Helga and Baldir determined this was once a surface village dating back to the ancient dwarven kingdom of Haunghdannar.
In the nearby unearthed keep, they encountered Nundro, the youngest brother. Nundro explained the eldest, Gundren, was already in the lower levels working on the crypt, and the only passage down was a narrow winding chute. After some struggle, they eventually dropped down and arrived at the crypt's door, left ajar. The main atrium was dust-caked and choaked, but a mural told the eulogy of the king buried here: his triumphs, legacy, and his descent into madness. The Heirs ventured further, stumbling on a unit of ritually buried dwarves. They dispatched them with ease—Tordek especially so—and after the battle, Orreft and Catriona returned the bodies to their graves.
Soon they happened upon a prestigious-looking casket and a body half embalmed. A plaque on the dais holding the casket translated to: Here lies King Baern Ungart III the Covetous, Nineteenth King of Haunghdannar. Assuming the body belonged to the casket, Orreft opened it to the surprise of a gas trap. As the adventurers were choking, a disembodied voice echoed through the hall, proclaiming they will never take its riches.

Rewards Granted

In addition to the looting rights for clearing out the crypt for the Rockseeker brothers, the Heirs of Delzoun were paid 100 gold upfront. What they had looted so far included some well-preserved Haunghdannar pottery.
Orreft and Catriona were inspired by their selfless respect for the dead after placing the bodies of the dwarven skeletons back in their tombs.

Missions/Quests Completed

After a long trip from Mirabar, the dwarves made contact with Tharden and accepted his contract.

Character(s) interacted with

The Heirs shared a round of Conyberry mead with Tharden Rockseeker while settling on their deal. Afterward, they encountered Nundro Rockseeker, who elaborated on the excavation.

Notes

  • Catriona's prayed to Marthammor Duin for safe travel. In return, he soiled some of their food: a dark omen.
  • Imbim had tried and spectacularly failed to befriend a goat while traveling to the excavation.
  • While exploring the camp, Catriona found (and kept) Nundro's journal.
  • The chute proved difficult for Orreft and Tordek. They both got stuck and panicked: Imbim rescued Orreft while Tordek painfully saved himself with a pickaxe.
